Marvia Malik is a Pakistani transgender newsreader and media figure. She became the first openly transgender newsreader to appear on Pakistani television when she made her debut in 2018. [1] [2] [3]

Early life

Malik was born in Lahore in 1997 to a family of three siblings. [4] As a child, she was bullied by her classmates in school but she managed to complete her matriculation. She became estranged from her family later in life. [5] After leaving home, she took refuge with other trans women. [6] She was determined to become a lawyer or a journalist her whole life. [7]

Professional life and activism

She worked as a makeup artist in order to fund her higher studies, before pursuing a career in mass media, graduating with a degree in the latter from Punjab University. [5]

She then applied for a position at Kohenoor News. [8] Regarding the breakthrough with her becoming a news anchor, Marvia has stated that, "Our society treats transgender people shamefully, degrading them, denying them jobs, laughing at them and taunting them. I want to change that." [6]

She has previously modelled as well. [9] She has walked the runway for the Pakistan Fashion Design Council fashion week in Lahore, a job she got through students at the Lahore Grammar School. [5]

In March 2018, Malik became the first openly transgender person to fill the role of newsreader on a Pakistani news broadcast. [8] This occurrence attracted media attention. [1] [2] [3] She is working with Kohenoor News "Azad Bhi Zimydar Bhi" the news channel helped her to grow in the field of journalism.[ citation needed ]

She is planning to advocate property rights for trans persons in Pakistan. [7] She is also demanding reservation for trans persons in employment and in Parliament. [10] She does not consider herself to be "third gender". [4]

In February 2023, Malik was returning home from the pharmacy when two gunmen opened fire on her. Malik reportedly survived the attack, and stated to Dawn that the attack had been preceded by threatening phone calls regarding her transgender advocacy. [11]

She has also starred as the main female lead in the 2016 film Mah e Mir, and had a supporting role in the 2011 social drama Bol.

Miss Pakistan World is a beauty pageant for women of Pakistani descent from around the world. The event used to be held in Toronto, Canada but has moved to Pakistan and is held annually in Lahore, Pakistan.

Khuda Mera Bhi Hai is a Pakistani drama serial that aired on ARY Digital from 22 October 2016 to 10 April 2017. The serial is written by Asma Nabeel, directed by Shahid Shafaat and produced by Sana Shahnawaz. The title soundtrack has been composed and sung by Waqar Ali. Padmini Prakash is an Indian news anchor, actress and transgender rights activist. She became the first openly trans person to work as a news anchor in India when she joined the Tamil channel Lotus News Channel on 15 August 2014.

Zara Noor Abbas Gill, also known by her married name Zara Noor Abbas Siddiqui, is a Pakistani actress. She is best known for her role as Arsala in Momina Duraid's Khamoshi (2017), and has also acted in serials Dharkan (2016), Lamhay (2018), Qaid (2018), Deewar-e-Shab (2019), Ehd-e-Wafa (2019), Phaans (2021), Badshah Begum (2022) and Jhoom (2023). She made her film debut with Wajahat Rauf's Chhalawa (2019) and later appeared in Asim Raza's Parey Hut Luv in the same year.
