Mary Racelis

Mary Racelis-Hollsteiner (born 1932) is a Filipino sociologist, anthropologist, and development worker. She has been a faculty member at the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines since 1960, becoming the first female professor at the university. [1]

She is currently a research scientist at the Institute of Philippine Culture of the Ateneo de Manila University. Her research interests include poverty, urbanization, civil society, and community development.

Early life and education

A child of a Filipino father and American mother, Racelis was born in Manila, Philippines in 1932. [2] She attended her grade school in the Philippines, before moving to the United States with her family where she earned her high school diploma in New York. In 1954, she received her Bachelor of Arts, majoring in sociology and anthropology from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. In 1955, she returned to the Philippines with husband, Helmut Hollsteiner and obtained a Master of Arts in sociology from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1960. [3]

Career

From 1979 to 1983, she joined the UNICEF in New York as Senior Policy Specialist, Family/Child Welfare and Women’s Development (1979-83). Racelis then became UNICEF Regional Director in Eastern and Southern Africa (1983-92). Upon returning to the Philippines in 1992 as Country Representative of the Ford Foundation (1992-97), and has served since 1997 as a consultant to the Philippine government, UNICEF, and various international agencies. [4]

In 2003-04, she was appointed to the UN Secretary-General's Panel on United Nations—Civil Society Relations. [5] She also worked on socio-cultural and gender issues in pro-poor sustainable tourism in the Greater Mekong Subregion. [6]

She teaches sociology and anthropology courses at the Ateneo de Manila University and the University of the Philippines Diliman.

Racelis is a member of the board of trustees of the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement. [7]

Honors

In 1975, De La Salle University awarded her an honorary Doctorate in the Social Sciences. In 2003, the Ateneo de Manila University awarded her an honorary Doctor of Humanities. [8]

In 2001, Racelis won the Philippine National Book Award, in the category of History, for the book Bearers of Benevolence: The Thomasites and Public Education in the Philippines, which she co-edited with Judy Celine Ick. [9]

Bienvenido Lumbera was a Filipino poet, critic and dramatist. Lumbera is known for his nationalist writing and for his leading role in the Filipinization movement in Philippine literature in the 1960s, which resulted in his being one of the many writers and academics jailed during Ferdinand Marcos' Martial Law regime. He received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communications in 1993, and was proclaimed a National Artist of the Philippines for literature in 2006. Resil Buagas Mojares is a Filipino historian and critic of Philippine literature best known as for his books on Philippine history. He is acclaimed by various writers and critics as the Visayan Titan of Letters, due to his immense contribution to Visayan literature. He was recognized in 2018 as a National Artist of the Philippines for Literature - a conferment which represents the Philippine state's highest recognition for artists.

Karina Constantino David was a Filipino activist, public servant, and musician best known for being a former chairperson of the Civil Service Commission of the Philippines, and for her opposition to the Martial Law dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos as part of the activist duo "Inang Laya". She also served as the chairperson of the Career Executive Service Board, a government entity supervising the top management personnel of the Philippine government. Antonio Gabriel Maestrado La Viña is a Filipino lawyer, educator, and environmental policy expert. A former undersecretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), executive director of the Manila Observatory, and dean of the Ateneo School of Government, he currently teaches law, governance, and philosophy in the Ateneo de Manila University, University of the Philippines, De La Salle University, Xavier University, San Beda University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Lyceum of the Philippines University, Pamantasang ng Lungsod ng Maynila, Far Eastern University, Ateneo de Zamboanga, Liceo de Cagayan, and the Philippine Judicial Academy. In addition to these teaching responsibilities, La Viña is the director of the Energy Collaboratory of the Manila Observatory.
