Masterbulk Private Limited is a shipping company which was established in Singapore in February 1995 following a major spin off from the Bergen, Norway-based Westfal-Larsen & Co A/S, of which it remains a subsidiary. [1] [2]

The Company owns a total of 18 open hatch general cargo vessels. Its fleet operates in the drybulk segment and is involved in the transportation of unitised, bulk cargo and break bulk cargo worldwide, specialising in bale pulp and forestry products, steel products, and project cargo.

The technical management of these vessels is outsourced to Zeaborn Ship Management (Singapore) Pte Ltd and Westfal-Larsen Management AS. The commercial management is performed by Pool Manager Saga Welco AS, in Tenvik, Norway, which is a joint venture along with Saga Shipholding (Norway) AS. The Saga Welco Pool manages the largest and youngest fleet of Open Hatch Gantry Crane vessels in the market, which currently includes 52 vessels, with 1 on order. Masterbulk is based in Singapore and has 9 employees. [2]

In 2014 Masterbulk established a new venture with fellow Norwegian shipowners Saga Shipholding to operate their fleets of open hatch gantry and jib-craned bulkers in a joint pool, Saga Welco. [1] [3]

The open hatch bulk carrier, often referred to as OHBC or conbulker, is designed to offer direct access to the hold through cargo hatches which extend the full width of the vessel. As a result, large cargo units can be lowered into place. If it is possible, the holds or hatches are designed around standard cargo unit sizes. Sometimes a gantry crane is fitted. There is special attention for cargo-handling shipping gear. These conbulkers are expensive because there is extra steel necessary to widen the hatches. This is crucial to provide strength. The open hatches are useful for forest products, such as pre-slung timber and logs. The heavy units are more easy to handle than in a conventional bulk carrier. The open hatch bulk carriers can also be used to carry containers on the outward leg, and dry bulk on the return leg. The first open hatch bulk carrier was built in 1962, for the use of paper trade.

J. Lauritzen(JL) is a Danish shipping company with worldwide operations headquartered in Hellerup, Denmark. JL is a private company wholly owned by the Lauritzen Foundation, a Danish commercial foundation that is also the main shareholder (around 40%) of DFDS, one of Europe's largest ferry shipping and logistics company.
