Mbaranga Gasarabwe (born 1959) is a Rwandan diplomat who served as Deputy Special Representative for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) and Resident Coordinator [1] in Mali from 2015 until 2021. [2] [3]

Gasarabwe was previously the inaugural Assistant Secretary-General for Safety and Security for the United Nations, serving under United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon from 2011 until 2015. [4]

Education

Gasarabwe obtained her master's degree in economics from the University of Burundi. She obtained a master's degree in management and business administration from Hult International Business School (at the time known as the Arthur D. Little School of Management) in Boston, Massachusetts, United States.

Career

Gasarabwe joined the UN in 1991 and has held a number of position in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in New York City, including Chief of Division ad interim for Eastern and Central Africa. Prior to her current appointment, she was Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative and Designated Official in Mali and, since 1998, she had also served as Resident Coordinator in a number of other countries, including Guinea, Djibouti, and Benin.

From 2011 until 2015, Gasarabwe was the inaugural Assistant Secretary-General for Safety and Security for the United Nations. In this position, she was responsible for managing the department and reports to the Under-Secretary-General for Safety and Security Peter Thomas Drennan.

An international decoration is a military award which is not bestowed by a particular country, but rather by an international organization such as the United Nations or NATO. Such awards are normally issued as service medals, for participation in various international military operations, and not for specific acts of heroism or bravery. The first medal from an international organization accepted for wear by the United States Military was the United Nations Korea Medal in 1951. Subsequent acceptance of other United Nations Medals did not come until 1964 with Executive Order 11139. Acceptance of the medals of other international multilateral organizations finally came with Executive Order 11446 in 1969. Acceptance of these international decorations must be approved by not only the Secretary of Defense, but also the Secretary of State.

Bo Asplund served as United Nations Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan, the United Nations Resident Coordinator and the Humanitarian Coordinator in Afghanistan. He was appointed to the position by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in August 2007.

Moustapha Soumaré is the United Nations Deputy Special Representative in the Republic of South Sudan. Prior to this appointment of 24 December 2014 by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Mr. Soumaré served as the United Nations Deputy Special Representative in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

United Nations Mission in South Sudan

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is a United Nations peacekeeping mission for the recently independent South Sudan, which became independent on 9 July 2011. UNMISS was established on 8 July 2011 by United Nations Security Council Resolution 1996 (2011). UNMISS is since December 2016 headed by Special Representative of the Secretary-General David Shearer who succeeded Ellen Margrethe Løj. As of May 2019, it is composed of 15,000 military personnel, 1,800 police, and 2,800 civilian workers. It is headquartered in the South Sudanese capital of Juba.

Arnauld Antoine Akodjènou United Nations official

Arnauld Antoine Akodjènou, a native of Benin, is a long-life humanitarian and diplomat, currently serving as Special Adviser for Africa at the Kofi Annan Foundation specifically working on the Democracy and Electoral Integrity Initiative. Prior to this he served as the Regional Refugee Coordinator and Special Adviser to the High Commissioner for refugees for the South Sudan Situation at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Sukehiro Hasegawa
