McDowell County Schools is the operating school district within McDowell County, West Virginia. It is governed by the McDowell County Board of Education.

Unions

AFT-McDowell Local 4906 is the locally chartered union of the American Federation of Teachers. [3] [4] AFT-McDowell represents only teachers in McDowell County. AFT-McDowell is a local affiliate of AFT-West Virginia. [5] All AFT local unions are affiliated with the National and WV AFL-CIO [6]

Two unions represent service personnel employed by McDowell County Schools. The Paraprofessional and School-Related Personnel (PSRP) division of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO and The West Virginia School Service Personnel (WVSSPA). [7] School service personnel include non-administrative office employees, aides, custodians, transportation, maintenance, and school meal providers.

The McDowell County Education Association (MCEA) is an association of school administrators and teachers for this school district. Gwen Lacy is the President. It is a local affiliate of the West Virginia Education Association.

McDowell County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 19,111. Its county seat is Welch. McDowell County is the southernmost county in the state. It was created in 1858 by the Virginia General Assembly and named for Virginia Governor James McDowell. It became a part of West Virginia in 1863, when several Union-affiliated counties seceded from the state of Virginia during the American Civil War. McDowell County is located in the Cumberland Mountains, part of the Appalachia region.

Berwind is a town on the Dry Fork in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population is 278. The town is named for Edward Julius Berwind, owner of the Berwind Company, and was originally a company town. It was later incorporated in 1905. Berwind is the hometown of Vern Bickford, a starting pitcher in Major League Baseball who played with the Braves in Boston (1948-1952) and Milwaukee (1953), and for the Baltimore Orioles (1954). Berwind is also encompassed by the Berwind census designated place.

Iaeger High School in Iaeger, West Virginia was a Grade 9 through 12 High School, part of the McDowell County Schools District. It was located in the city of Iaeger and offered a wide range of academics and athletics to students including certain college and AP classes, along with football, baseball, golf, softball, volleyball, and basketball. Iaeger High School closed after the 2009-2010 school term and consolidated with nearby Big Creek High School to form Riverview High School.

Ruth Rowan is an American politician from the U.S. state of West Virginia. She is a member of the Republican Party and served as a member the West Virginia House of Delegates from the 57th District, which represented parts of Mineral County and Hampshire County in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle. In 2004, she defeated the embattled House Delegate Jerry Mezzatesta for his seat after he was embroiled in a political scandal in 2003-04.

Mount View High School (MVHS) is a public high school in Welch, West Virginia. Located on the grounds of an old strip mine in the mountains of McDowell County, West Virginia, Mount View High School is one of two schools in the Welch area, with the other being Welch Elementary School. As of 2010, the school teaches forty-seven courses for its students, and serves grades 6–12. The school's colors are gold and brown, which are also shown on the school's mascot, the Golden Knight. The average class size is around fifteen to twenty students per teacher, and the school had a combined population of 812 students as of 2014. Mount View High School has previously offered evening college classes from Bluefield State College.

The Cincinnati Federation of Teachers (CFT) is a labor union representing teachers, paraprofessionals, support personnel and others in the Cincinnati public school system. The union is Local 1520 of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), AFL–CIO.

The Montana Federation of Public Employees(MFPE) is a Montana labor union. Its 23,000 members make it the largest union in the state.

Big Creek High School was a Grade 9 through 12 public high school located in War, West Virginia. It was operated by the McDowell County Schools and governed by the McDowell County Board of Education. Big Creek High School closed after the 2009–2010 school term and was consolidated with nearby Iaeger High School to form River View High School.

Anawalt Lake Wildlife Management Area is a 1,792-acre (725 ha) protected area located in McDowell County, West Virginia. It is managed by the Wildlife Resources Section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

Kanawha County Schools is the operating school district within Kanawha County, West Virginia. It is governed by the Kanawha County Board of Education.

The WVSSAC Super Six Football Championships is a series of high school football games, typically held on the first weekend of December, that determine the high school champions of the U.S. state of West Virginia. The tournaments that lead to the championship games, as well as regular-season competition, are governed by the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC). The games have the name of "Super Six" because six teams play in the state's three championship games. The Championship games are held at Wheeling Island Stadium in Wheeling, a two-day affair, with one game on Friday and two on Saturday.

The coal mining communities, or coal towns of McDowell County, West Virginia were situated to exploit the area's rich coal seams. Many of these towns were located in deep ravines that afforded direct access to the coal through the hillsides, allowing mined coal to be dropped or conveyed downhill to railway lines at the valley floor. Many of these encampments were set up as company towns, and when their mines closed, the towns vanished. McDowell County covers much of the Flat Top-Pocahontas Coalfield and a small portion of the Williamson Coalfield.

The 2018 United States House of Representatives elections in West Virginia were held on November 6, 2018, to elect the three U.S. representatives from the West Virginia, one from each of the state's three congressional districts. The filing deadline was January 27, 2018. The primary elections were held on May 8, 2018. The elections coincided with the other elections to the House of Representatives, elections to the United States Senate and various state and local elections.
