Mergellina

Mergellina is a coastal district of the city of Naples, Italy. It is located in the quartiere of Chiaia. It stands at the foot of the Posillipo Hill and faces the Castel dell'Ovo. Some people say the name derives from "mergoglino", a local name for the smew ^{[ citation needed ]}, others believe it is a corruption of "Mare Giallo", which refers to when the sea turned yellow due to floating tufa rock dust following a volcanic eruption many centuries ago.^{[ citation needed ]} However, very likely the real origin of the name is from Latin "mare ialinum", that stands for clear, transparent sea.^[1]

Overview

Historically, it was a small fishing village and port and was quite distinct from Naples, itself. The expansion of Naples to the west under the Spaniards in the 17th century and subsequent development under the Bourbons and then by the national Italian government between 1880 and 1915 gradually led to the incorporation of Mergellina into greater metropolitan Naples. Today it is still a fishing port but also an important secondary tourist harbor for hydrofoil traffic to the islands in the bay of Naples and to various tourist destinations along the Campanian coast. The port also serves as a mooring for private pleasure craft.

Mergellina was home to the poet Jacopo Sannazaro, whose verses in Italian are part of the body of literature that helped form the Italian language in the Middle Ages. His Latin works, primarily De partu Virginis, though little read today, earned him the nickname of "the Christian Virgil". The main square, one block from the harbor, faces the church of Santa Maria del Parto with his elaborate tomb.

During the 1960 Summer Olympics it was used as Olympic Harbor for the Finn (at Sea Garden) and Flying Dutchman sailboats (at Posillipo). This charming location is famous for being a favourite seashore restaurants' area. At pier, fishermen for years have sold their daily catch.

Abraham Everardus "Biem" Dudok van Heel was a sailor from the Netherlands. He competed in the Dragon class at the 1948, 1952 and 1960 Olympics and finished in 8th, 6th and 13th place, respectively. Verhagen, as helmsman on the Dutch Flying Dutchman Daisy (H102), took 5th place with crew Gerard Lautenschutz and Jaap Helder. During the 1964 Summer Olympics in Naples and 1968 Summer Olympics in Acapulco he again helmed Daisy (H157/H187), this time with Nick de Jong, and finished in 6th and 18th place, respectively.

Gerardus "Gerard" Lautenschutz is a sailor from the Netherlands, who represented his country at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Naples. Lautenschutz, as crew on the Dutch Flying Dutchman Daisy (H102), took the 5th place with helmsman Ben Verhagen. After 5 races Lautenschutz needed to go home due to family circumstances. The last two races were crewed by Jaap Helder. Lautenschutz was born in Amsterdam.

Hans Sleeswijk is a sailor from the Netherlands, who represented his country at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Naples in the Finn. Sleeswijk took the 24th place. In the previous Olympics in Melbourne Sleeswijk was the spare sailor for the Dutch Olympic team. However, after the Soviet invasion in Hungary the Dutch government decided that the Dutch Olympic team would not compete.

Jacob Ralph "Jacq" van den Berg is a sailor from the Netherlands who represented his country at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Naples. He was born in Birmingham. Van den Berg, as crew on the Dutch Dragon, took the 13th place with helmsman Wim van Duyl and fellow crew member Biem Dudok van Heel. In the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne Van den Berg was the Dragon crew for the Dutch Olympic team. After the Soviet invasion in Hungary, however, the Dutch government decided that the Dutch Olympic team would not compete.

Jacob "Jaap" Helder is a sailor from the Netherlands, who represented his country at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Naples. After the 5th race Gerard Lautenschutz, who was crewing on the Dutch Flying Dutchman Daisy (H102), needed to go home due to family circumstances. Helder with helmsman Ben Verhagen crewed the last three races. The team took 5th place.
