Michael Barnes was the mayor pro tempore of Charlotte,North Carolina. He also served as acting mayor for a short time following the resignation of former mayor Patrick Cannon,who was arrested on March 26,2014 for corruption charges. [2] [3] [4] Barnes immediately became acting mayor upon Cannon's resignation. The City Council was then required to appoint a mayor to serve out the remainder of Cannon's term (through Dec. 2015). [5] On April 7,the council voted to appoint Dan Clodfelter,a state senator,as the new mayor.
Barnes,an attorney and a member of the Democratic Party,served as a member of the Charlotte City Council representing District 4 for four terms until he was elected to an at-large seat in the 2013 election. Following that election,he was chosen as the new mayor pro tem by his colleagues. [6]
In 2015,Barnes declined to run for re-election for his City Council seat and instead pursued the Democratic nomination for Mayor of Charlotte. He placed fourth in the primary,losing to former Chair of the Mecklenburg County Commission Jennifer Roberts,and left City Council in December 2015. [7] He was succeed as Mayor Pro Tem by at-large City Council member Vi Lyles.

Daniel G. Clodfelter is an American politician and attorney from North Carolina. He served as a Democratic member of the North Carolina General Assembly representing the State's thirty-seventh Senate district,which includes constituents in Mecklenburg County,from January 1999 through April 8,2014,when he resigned after being appointed Mayor of Charlotte,North Carolina.

Patrick DeAngelo Cannon is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party who served on the City Council of Charlotte,North Carolina from 1994 through 2013 and was subsequently elected the city's 56th Mayor in November 2013. On March 26,2014,Cannon was arrested on charges of accepting over $48,000 in bribes from undercover FBI agents posing as businessmen wanting to work with the city. Cannon resigned as mayor later that evening,and was later sentenced to 44 months in prison.

The Lynx Blue Line is a light rail line in Charlotte,North Carolina. The first rail line of the Charlotte Area Transit System,it is the first major rapid rail service of any kind in the state. The incumbent,Democrat Jennifer Roberts,was eligible to run for a second two-year term. She ran but lost the Democratic nomination in the primary. Two members of the City Council,Democrat Vi Lyles and Republican Kenny Smith,won the primaries and advanced to face each other in the general election. Vi Lyles defeated Kenny Smith in the general election,and became the 59th mayor of Charlotte,North Carolina.
