In 2005 he was named Fighter of the Year by The Ring magazine, the Boxing Writers Association of America, and ESPN.

The fight was a WBO "eliminator", with the winner becoming the mandatory challenger for the WBO welterweight title, held at the time by Manny Pacquiao. The bout took place on 18 September 2010 at the LG Arena, with Brook winning by technical knockout in the fifth round.
