Michele A. Roberts (born 1956) is an American attorney and former executive director of the National Basketball Players Association. She was the first woman to hold that position and the first woman to head a major professional sports union in North America. [1] Previously, she was an attorney with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. [2]

Early life

Roberts grew up in a housing project in the South Bronx neighborhood of The Bronx in New York City. [2] She attended the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York. She earned her Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan University in 1977 and her Juris Doctor from the University of California, Berkeley's School of Law in 1980.[ citation needed ]

Career

Roberts began her career in 1980 at Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia. She served in that role for eight years, rising to the chief of the trial division. She was mentored by attorney Charles Ogletree. [3] [4]

Roberts built her reputation as a trial lawyer. She worked for Akin Gump from 2004 to 2011. In 2011 she was hired by Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. [5]

Roberts was named executive director of the National Basketball Players Association in July 2014. [2] She succeeded Billy Hunter in the position. She received 32 of 36 votes.

In 2014 she was named one of ESPNW's Impact 25. [6]

Roberts is an adjunct faculty member at Harvard Law School and a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. The Washingtonian once referred to her as the "finest pure trial lawyer in Washington." [2]

In 2020, Roberts announced plans to resign, but later entered negotiations with NBA players and owners. These negotiations included the planning for the 2020 NBA Bubble, where play resumed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The negotiations also included efforts to promote racial justice, such as painting Black Lives Matter on NBA courts. [7]

In 2021, Sports Illustrated included Roberts' in "The Unrelenting", a feature on women in sports. [8] Worth named her one of the "21 Most Powerful Women in the Business of Sports". [9] That same year, Crain's New York included her on its list of "Notable Women in Law". [10]

Roberts retired as the NBPA executive director in January of 2022. [11]

William R. Meagher (1903–1981) was a senior partner with the New York law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, one of the largest and highest-grossing law firms in the world. Meagher, a trial and appellate lawyer, served as senior partner from 1968 to 1974, and continued working with the firm until his death in 1981. Meagher was graduate of Fordham University.

Previously, Sloan was the publisher of Slate magazine.

Preeta D. Bansal is an American lawyer who served as the General Counsel and Senior Policy Advisor to the federal Office of Management and Budget from 2009 until 2011. Prior to her work in the Obama administration, she served as a law partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom and as the Solicitor General of New York during Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's first term. She also has been a member and past chair of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). She is currently a lecturer at MIT and senior advisor at the Laboratory for Social Machines based at the MIT Media Lab.

Paul Francis is an American business executive and politician who has served under three Governors of New York, holding such positions as the Director of State Operations for the State of New York. In that position he oversaw the state's eight major departments, along with the other offices and divisions of the Government of New York. He has been described as “one of Albany's most influential behind-the-scenes players.”

Joseph Harold Flom was an American lawyer and pioneer of mergers and acquisitions, specializing in representing companies in takeover battles. By the 1980s, he had acquired a reputation of being "Mr. Takeover". Flom became a partner at what is now known as Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in 1954, and helped transform it from a four-lawyer firm into one of the largest law firms in the United States. In 1999, The American Lawyer named him one of their "Lawyers of the Century".

Gail Joanne Koff was an American lawyer who became one of the lead partners in the law firm of Jacoby & Meyers, for which she helped establish a New York City office and develop a presence in the Northeastern United States.
