Michael 'Mick' Woods (born 15 February 1949 in Great Britain) is a former long-distance runner and a middle/long-distance running coach. [1] He is currently a coach at Aldershot, Farnham & District AC [2] and sports lecturer [3] at St Mary's University in London. As an athlete, Woods ran internationally for Ireland and ran in over 70 marathons, with a personal best of 2:20.12. [4] Woods is now one of the nation's leading endurance running coaches. [4]

Athletics career

Mick Woods' first marathon was the Polytechnic Marathon in 1971. He has been a member of Aldershot, Farnham and District Athletics Club since 1964. Woods ended up completing more than 70 marathons in his career with a personal best of 2:20:12, achieved in the London Marathon in 1983. He represented Ireland in various international marathon races.

Stephanie Twell - competed in the 1500m at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 5000m at the 2016 Rio Olympics, 1500m Bronze medallist at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and 5000m Bronze medallist at the 2016 European Champs

Emma Pallant - Gold medallist in the 2011 U23 cross country championships

Beth Potter - 2014 Commonwealth Games 5000m 9th & 10,000m 5th and Rio Olympic Games 10,000m finalist

Anna Emilie Møller - Double Gold medalist 2019 U23 European Championships 5000m & 3000m Steeplechase. Doha World Championships 7th, 3000m Steeplechase, 2019. Gold medalist European U23 Cross Country Championships 2019.

Coaching career

Woods is based at St Mary's University in London. He has been coaching since 1986 [5] and has been extremely successful, putting numerous junior athletes into European Championships, GB teams and even the Olympic Games. [6] Woods is currently coach to nearly 300 athletes, playing a huge role in developing international track and cross country athletes for Great Bitian. Woods has coached Jonathan "Jonny" Hay, [7] Ellis Cross, [8] Louise Small [9] Anna Emilie Moller, [10] Emily Hosker Thorn-hill, [11] Phillipa Bowden, [12] Niamh Brown, [13] Phoebe Law, [14] Amelia Quirk [15] and many more, to international and national success.

In 2003, Woods was employed by UK Athletics as a performance coach. [16]

In 2008, he was presented with the English Athletics Association Coach Of The Year Award. [17]

In 2014, Woods was asked by Athletics Weekly about his retirement and his response was, "I like seeing athletes come through and improve and I coach athletes to race. As I get older, such a busy lifestyle is becoming more of a challenge, but I do not envisage retiring. Athletics is in my blood”. [18]

She is also a world-class marathon athlete, winning the women's elite wheelchair race at the 2007 and 2012 London Marathon.

Tatyana Petrova Arkhipova Russian long-distance runner

Tatyana Petrova Arkhipova is a Russian runner. She is a former specialist in the 3000 metres steeplechase, won bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She later moved up to marathon and won the Olympic bronze medal in that event at the 2012 London Games.

Stephanie Twell British runner

Stephanie April "Steph" Twell is a British middle- and long-distance runner who competed at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and trains at Aldershot, Farnham & District AC. She won the 1500 metres at the 2008 World Junior Championships, and is a three-time winner of the European Junior Cross Country Championships (2006–2008), as well as being part of four winning Great Britain teams. Representing Scotland, she won a bronze medal in the 1500 metres at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Inês Monteiro Portuguese athlete

Inês Alexandra das Neves Monteiro is a Portuguese athlete who competes in middle and long-distance track running, as well as road running and cross country. She started out as a cross country runner, winning a silver and a gold medal at the 1998 and 1999 European junior race. She has represented Portugal at the 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics, and has competed twice at the World Championships in Athletics. She is a regular performer at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, generally finishing around 30th place.

Andy Vernon British long-distance runner

Andrew James Vernon is a British long-distance runner who specialised in the 5000 metres, the 10,000 metres on track and cross country running. After the 2018 commonwealth games and started to concentrate on the roads winning Manchester Half Marathon with the aim of doing a full marathon in 2019. Vernon competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the men's 10,000 metres. He has also competed in two Commonwealth Games, a World Indoor Championship and six World Cross Country Championships. Vernon is a two-time European Athletics Championship medallist and a Summer Universiade gold medallist. He currently competes for Aldershot, Farnham & District AC.

Rene Gamarcha Herrera is a Filipino track and field athlete. In total he has won 5 gold medals at South East Asian games. Currently, Herrera is one of the newly appointed coaches of the Philippines national athletics team.

Kareema Saleh Jasim is a Kenyan-born Bahraini professional long-distance runner who competes in distances ranging from 3000 metres to the half marathon, as well as the steeplechase. She is the Bahraini national record holder in the 10,000 m and steeplechase.

Eilish McColgan British middle-distance runner

Eilish McColgan is a Scottish middle- and long-distance runner. She is a two-time European medallist after winning a silver in the 5000 metres in 2018, and a bronze for the indoor 3000 metres in 2017. Lennie Waite British track and field athlete (born 1986)

Lennie Waite is a British track and field athlete. She represented Great Britain in the 2016 Summer Olympics in the 3000m Steeplechase. She holds a personal best of 9:35.91 in the 3000m Steeplechase, achieved on 12 June 2016 at the Portland Track Festival. She is the sixth fastest British Steeplechaser of all-time.

Aldershot, Farnham and District Athletic Club is an athletics club based in Aldershot, Hampshire, England. The club are based at the Aldershot Military Stadium in Aldershot, Hampshire. AFD competes in the Youth Development League (YDL), Hampshire and Surrey Leagues, various relay events including the Southern Road Relays and National Road and Cross Country Relays. Callum Hawkins British long-distance runner

Callum Hawkins is a British distance runner, who competed in the marathon at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He is the Scottish record holder in the marathon and the British all-time number three at that distance behind Mo Farah and Steve Jones. Hawkins is also the all-time Great Britain number two in the half marathon. He is the Great Scottish Run course record holder and was the first British man to win that event in 23 years.

2018 British Athletics Championships International athletics championship event

The 2018 British Athletics Championships was the national championship in outdoor track and field for athletes in the United Kingdom, held from 3–5 July 2018 at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. It was organised by UK Athletics. A full range of outdoor events were held up to 5000 metres. The competition served as the main selection event for the 2018 European Athletics Championships and the 2018 Athletics World Cup.

Adva Cohen is an Israeli runner. As of 2019 she held the Israeli national records in the indoor mile, 3000 metres, and 5000 metres, and outdoor under-23 3000 metres steeplechase, 5000 metres, and half marathon.
