Michael Pero (born 26 February 1960) [1] is a New Zealand businessman and entrepreneur.

Professional history

Pero founded his mortgage broking business in 1991. [2] In 2011, Pero established a real estate company under the same brand name. [3]

In recent surveys, Colmar Brunton reported [2] that the Pero brand awareness was significantly higher than all other mortgage brokers and most people surveyed considered Mike Pero Mortgages to be New Zealand's most trusted mortgage adviser. [4]

In 1999 and 2003, Pero won the New Zealand Pacific Business Award for categories Business of the Year, [5] and Business Person of the Year. [6]

In 2003, Mike Pero Mortgages was named the Westpac Franchise of the Year. [7] In 2014, Mike Pero Real Estate was ranked 23rd in the Deloitte Fast 50 with 327.8% growth, which placed it 6th in the category of ‘Retail or consumer product’. [8]

Pero was a founding member of the NZ Mortgage Brokers Association and recognised for his services to the Mortgage Broking Industry of New Zealand – he was the first recipient of the Geoff Chong Memorial Trophy in 2005. [9]

Mike Pero Real Estate is represented across New Zealand by 60 (approx.) offices located from Invercargill to the far north and over 200 licensed real estate agents. [10]

As a community focused company, Mike Pero Real Estate formed the Mike Pero Foundation in 2014. Since then they have helped to raise funds of over $500,000 for the local community. [10]

In February 2017 Pero opened what he believes to be New Zealand's first permanent public display of classic Japanese motorcycles. [11] Mike Pero's Motorcycle Gallery displays more than 60 motorcycles from the 70s, 80s and 90s – loaned from owners and collectors nationwide. [12] Pero hopes that the gallery gives the general public an opportunity to appreciate some classic machines they haven't seen before or have wanted to see again.

In July 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic Pero announced plans for a new airline, Pasifika Air, connecting Christchurch and Rarotonga. [13] [14] In June 2021, it was announced that the plans for the airline have been abandoned. [15]

Personal life

Pero was brought up with his two siblings Iain and Shelly in the suburb of Wainoni in Christchurch. His father Tom (Tukaka Te Ariki Pero) was born in Rarotonga, Cook Islands (died 7 December 2012) while his Mother Angela Christine Iwikau (formerly Pero; née Langford) was born in Bath, England 2 August 1940. Pero is married to Rachel Pero (née Sanchez) and lives in Christchurch. [16] In December 2019 he announced plans to move to the Cook Islands and that he was building a home on family land near Matavera. [17]

Sporting achievements

Pero was six times National Motorcycle Road Racing Champion, [18] from 1977 to 1982, twice 350cc & 500cc racing class as well as two times in the 410cc Production Series. [19] Pero set the New Zealand land speed record for a 350cc motorcycle in 1979. The record of 238 km/h still stands today. [16]

Pero is patron for Motorcycling New Zealand. [18]

Pero has a strong passion for Motorsport and the Mike Pero Racing Team flies the flag for the brand in the V8 SuperTourers Series with Greg Murphy as the team driver. [20]

Rarotonga is the largest and most populous of the Cook Islands. The island is volcanic, with an area of 67.39 km2 (26.02 sq mi), and is home to almost 75% of the country's population, with 13,007 of a total population of 17,434. The Cook Islands' Parliament buildings and international airport are on Rarotonga. Rarotonga is a very popular tourist destination with many resorts, hotels and motels. Its main base and hub is Rarotonga International Airport.

Mount Cook Airline was a regional airline based in Christchurch, New Zealand. Formerly part of the Mount Cook Group and latterly a subsidiary of Air New Zealand, it operated scheduled services throughout the country under the Air New Zealand Link brand. In December 2019, the brand name was retired with all services operated under the Air New Zealand banner.

Tauranga Airport is an airport serving the city of Tauranga, New Zealand. It is located adjacent to Tauranga Harbour in the suburb of Mount Maunganui, approximately 3 km northeast of Tauranga CBD. The terminal is located to the north of the runway, on Jean Batten Drive, and consists of a two-storey building with four tarmac gates. Air New Zealand serves the airport through its subsidiaries Mount Cook Airline and Air Nelson, with flights to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. A further two regional airlines also operate to the airport, as well as scenic and charter flights, skydiving operations and general aviation.

Euromarque Motorsport Park is a permanent motor racing circuit owned and operated by the Canterbury Car Club Inc on land leased from the Christchurch City Council. It is located at 107 Hasketts Road in Templeton, 13-kilometre (8.1 mi) west of Christchurch, New Zealand. It was opened as Ruapana Park in 1963, and between 2004 and 2013 was known as Powerbuilt Raceway at Ruapuna Park. Mike Pero joined the circuit as title sponsor from 2013-2023, as Mike Pero Motorsport Park. In the early parts of February 2023, the sponsorship deal was over, and Euromarque became the new title sponsor.

Thomas Edward Phillis was an Australian professional Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. He won the 1961 125cc motorcycle road racing World Championship and was the first person to lap the Isle of Man TT mountain circuit at over 100 mph on a pushrod engined motorcycle. He was also the first person to win a World Championship motorcycle race on a Japanese machine.
