Gulfport is the second-largest city in U.S. state of Mississippi after the state capital, Jackson. Along with Biloxi, Gulfport is the co-county seat of Harrison County and the larger of the two principal cities of the Gulfport–Biloxi metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the city of Gulfport had a total population of 72,926, with 416,259 residents in its metro area. The city lies along the Gulf Coast in southern Mississippi, taking its name from its port on the Mississippi Sound. It is also home to the U.S. Navy Atlantic Fleet Seabees.
Eddie Gay Robinson Sr. was an American football coach. For 56 years, from 1941 to 1942 and again from 1945 to 1997, he was the head coach at Grambling State University, a historically black university (HBCU) in Grambling, Louisiana. Robinson is recognized by many college football experts as one of the greatest coaches of all time. During a period in college football history when black players were not allowed to play for southern college programs, Robinson built Grambling State into a "small" college football powerhouse. He retired in 1997 with a record of 408–165–15. Robinson coached every single game from the field and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997. Robinson is arguably the most successful college football coach in FCS history and has the third most victories in college football history.
Lemuel Joseph Barney is an American former professional football player who was a cornerback for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL). A native of Gulfport, Mississippi, he played college football at Jackson State from 1964 to 1966. He was drafted by Detroit and played for the Lions as a cornerback, return specialist, and punter from 1967 to 1977. He was selected as the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1967, played in seven Pro Bowls, and was selected as a first-team All-NFL player in 1968 and 1969. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992. He has also been inducted into the Detroit Lions Hall of Fame, the Jackson State Sports Hall of Fame, the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
Rice–Totten Stadium is a 10,000-seat multi-purpose stadium location in Itta Bena, Mississippi, United States. It serves as the home field of the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils football team of Mississippi Valley State University. The stadium opened in 1958 as Magnolia Stadium and was renamed in 2000 in honor of former MVSU football players Jerry Rice and Willie Totten, who set many NCAA Division I-AA records in the 1980s. Rice went on to a 20-year career in the National Football League (NFL) and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Totten played professional football for several years after college and then went into coaching, serving as the head football coach at Mississippi Valley State from 2002 to 2009. He is one of the few college football coaches to have coached a game at a facility named after themselves.
Cedric A. Scott is an American football strength and conditioning coach and former defensive end who is the head strength and conditioning coach for Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL). Scott played college football at the University of Southern Mississippi and was drafted by the New York Giants in the fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft. He also played for the Cleveland Browns, as well as in NFL Europa for the Scottish Claymores and Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Willie "Satellite" Totten is an American football coach and former player. He is the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach at Mississippi Valley State University, a position he had held since 2019. Totten played college football at Mississippi Valley State and was as the starting quarterback at Delta Devils. Teamed with wide receiver Jerry Rice, Totten set more than 50 NCAA Division I-AA passing records while Rice setting many receiving records. The Delta Devils averaged 59 points a game during the 1984 season, with Totten throwing for a record 58 touchdowns and leading the Delta Devils to the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs. Archie Cooley, who was the head coach at MVSU from 1980 to 1986, was the architect of the pass-oriented offense that utilized the skills of Totten. Totten served as the head football coach at Mississippi Valley State from 2002 to 2009.
Rick Comegy is an American former college football and college baseball coach. On January 21, 2014, Comegy was introduced as the head coach at Mississippi Valley State. He previously served as the head football coach at Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi from 2006 to 2013. He was named JSU head coach on December 9, 2005 after ten years as head coach of Tuskegee University, where he compiled a 90–26 record. He has also served as head coach of Cheyney University and Central State University, where he won the NAIA national football championship in 1995. He served as an assistant coach at Central State University under former Cheyney/Central State/Florida A&M coach Billy Joe in the 80s and 90s.
Archie "Gunslinger" Cooley is a former college football coach. He served as the head football coach at Mississippi Valley State University from 1980 to 1986, University of Arkansas–Pine Bluff from 1987 to 1991, Norfolk State University in 1993, and Paul Quinn College from 2000 to 2006. At Mississippi Valley State, Cooley coached the tandem of Willie Totten and Jerry Rice, future College Football Hall of Fame quarterback and wide receiver, respectively.

Originally from Tampa, Florida, Washington played college football at Mississippi Valley State. After signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent, he played four seasons in the National Football League (NFL) for the Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals from 1982 to 1985.

The team is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, which is part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I. The team plays its home games at Magnolia Field in Itta Bena, Mississippi. Milton Barney Jr. is the team's head coach starting in the 2023 season.
