Royal question Political crisis in Belgium in 1950

The royal question was a major political crisis in Belgium that lasted from 1945 to 1951, coming to a head between March and August 1950. The "question" at stake surrounded whether King Leopold III could return to the country and resume his constitutional role amid allegations that his actions during World War II had been contrary to the provisions of the Belgian Constitution. It was eventually resolved by the abdication of Leopold in favour of his son Baudouin in 1951.

The Belgo-Congolese Round Table Conference was a meeting organized in two parts in 1960 in Brussels between on the one side representatives of the Congolese political class and chiefs and on the other side Belgian political and business leaders. The round table meetings led to the adoption of sixteen resolutions on the future of the Belgian Congo and its institutional reforms. With a broad consensus, the date for independence was set on June 30, 1960.

Amid the German invasion of Belgium, the Belgian government of Prime Minister Charles de Broqueville withdrew to Sainte-Adresse, a seaside resort town near Le Havre, in Seine-Inférieure, France in October 1914 where it remained for much of World War I. Although much of Belgium was occupied, a small portion of territory in the north-west of the country remained under Belgian control throughout the conflict and, rather than follow the government into France, King Albert I established his own headquarters in the Belgian town of Veurne from where he continued to command the Belgian Army on the Yser Front.

An orange–blue coalition is a type of governing coalition in Belgian politics that brings together Liberal parties and Christian democratic/humanist political parties. These coalitions are also termed Blue–Roman, corresponding to the colors of the liberal parties, and the Roman of the Roman Catholic Church for the Christian Democrats.
