Miria Rukoza Koburunga Matembe, LL.D (honoris causa) (born 28 August 1953) is a former member of the Pan-African Parliament from Uganda. [1] While serving there, she was chairperson of the Committee on Rules, Privileges and Discipline a permanent committee of the parliament.
In June 2006, she became a Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellow with the National Endowment for Democracy. [2]
Matembe is currently the chairperson Citizen Coalition on Electoral Democracy in Uganda (CCEDU). [3] [4]
Matembe was born in Bwizi Bwera, Kashari, in Mbarara, to Samuel and Eseza Rukooza who were peasants. Matembe is the 4th born of the nine siblings, five boys and four girls. [5]
Matembe went to Rutooma Primary School, from where she joined Bweranyangi Girls for her O-Level. She went to Namasagali College for her A-Level. [6] She received her Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Makerere University and her Master of Laws (LLM) degree from the University of Warwick. [7]
Matembe started her career as a pupil state attorney in the Department of DPP ministry of Justice. She then moved to lecture at Makerere University Business School(MUBS) which was then Uganda College of Commerce. After 5 years, she moved to the Central Bank of Uganda(Bank of Uganda). [8]
She was Mbarara District Woman Member of Parliament from 2001 to 2006. [9] She was defeated by NRM’s Peggy Waako in the 2021 Elderly MP elections where she was seeking to represent older persons in the 11th Parliament. [10]
Miria Matembe has been a strong proponent for and an advocate of women's rights in Uganda. For over two decades beginning in 1989, she was a member of Uganda’s parliament. She worked in the Ugandan government as minister for ethics and integrity from 1998 to 2003, after which time she became a member of the Pan-African Parliament representing Uganda.
In 1995, she was a member of the Constitutional Commission that created the Ugandan Constitution and She was one of the experts from Uganda and Kenya that reviewed and made proposals on the Proposed Constitution of Tanzania and presented their findings to the Warioba Committee in 2015, under the auspices of Kituo cha Katiba. [11] She was the former chairperson of Action for Development, Uganda's leading women's advocacy organization, an organization she co-founded. [12]
In 1990, she was the deputy general of the Pan-African Congress held in Kampala. She has been a lecturer on law and English at the Chartered Institute of Bankers, also in Kampala. A lawyer by profession, Matembe is also the author of several articles and a book, Miria Matembe: Gender, Politics, and Constitution Making in Uganda, on women in politics.
In October 2006, Matembe gave a lecture entitled "Women, War, Peace: Politics in Peacebuilding" at the University of San Diego's Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice Distinguished Lecture Series. [13]
In 2011, she delivered the keynote address at The 11th Sarah Ntiro Lecture and Award held at Grand Imperial Hotel, Kampala -Uganda to those women who are either inspiring models or have worked to facilitate girl-child education at the Forum for African Women Educationalists (Fawe) organised-event and, for the disadvantaged girl-child. The main awards came in two categories; the "Woman of Distinction" award that recognised women whose activities promoted girl child education, and the Model of Excellence award that awarded women achievers who set a good example for young girls. Matembe who was one of those honoured for her valiant efforts to promote girl child education gave thanks to god when accepting the award. She said ignorance and lack of resources were some of the issues hampering the advancement of girl child education.
She is married to Nekemia Matembe and they have 4 sons, named Godwin, Gilbert, Gideon, and Grace. [18]
Speciosa Naigaga Wandira Kazibwe, is a Ugandan politician and first female vice president in Africa. She was the sixth vice president of Uganda from 1994 to 2003, making her the first woman in Africa to hold the position of vice-president of a sovereign nation. Dr. Speciosa Kazibwe is also a Ugandan surgeon. She is also referred to as "Nnalongo", because of her twins. In August 2013, she was appointed by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa.
Sylvia Rosila Tamale is a Ugandan academic, and human rights activist in Uganda. She was the first woman dean in the law faculty at Makerere University, Uganda.
Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga is a Ugandan lawyer and politician who served as the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda from 19 May 2011 until 21 May 2021. She currently serves as the First Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda. She concurrently serves as Minister for East African Community Affairs, in the Cabinet of Uganda.
Ambassador Nusura TIPERU is a Ugandan diplomat,politician with vast experience as a National and East African legislator. She served as the first National Female Youth Member of the Ugandan Parliament after the promulgation of the 1995 Constitution.
Frank Kagyigyi Tumwebaze is a Ugandan educator and politician of the National Resistance Movement political party. He is the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, effective 8 June 2021.
Bweranyangi Girls' Secondary School is a girls-only boarding middle and high school in Bushenyi District in the Western Region of Uganda.
Jackee Budesta Batanda is a Ugandan journalist, writer and entrepreneur. She is a senior managing partner with Success Spark Brand Limited, a communications and educational company, and a co-founder of Mastermind Africa Group Limited, a business-networking group. In 2006, Batanda worked as a peace writer at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego. She was later awarded a research fellowship at the highly competitive Justice in Africa fellowship Programme with the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2008. In 2010, Batanda was International Writer-in-Residence at the Housing Authors and Literature Denmark, where she commenced work on her novel, A Lesson in Forgetting. In 2012, she was also featured in The Times alongside 19 young women shaping the future of Africa. That same year she was also a finalist in the 2012 Trust Women journalism Awards. She has been writer-in-residence at Lancaster University in the UK. She was selected by the International Women's Media Foundation as the 2011–12 Elizabeth Neuffer Fellow. During the fellowship, she studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Center for International Studies and other Boston-area universities, and worked at The New York Times and The Boston Globe.
Esther Mbulakubuza Mbayo, is a Ugandan politician. She is the Minister of the Presidency in the Ugandan Cabinet. She was appointed to that position on 6 June 2016, replacing Frank Tumwebaze, who was appointed Ministry of Information Information Technology and Communication. She also serves in the Parliament of Uganda, as the Luuka District Women's Representative.
Peace Regis Mutuuzo is a Ugandan politician who serves as the Women representative for Bunyangabu District. She is the Minister of State for Gender and Culture in the Ugandan Cabinet. She was appointed to that position on 6 June 2016. In 2021, she was re elected into the eleventh Uganda Parliament.
Nabilah Naggayi Sempala is a Ugandan politician. She is the incumbent Member of Parliament representing the Kampala Women Parliamentary Constituency in the 10th Ugandan Parliament.
Jacklet Atuhaire Rwabukurukuru Mukwana is a Ugandan oil and gas expert, international development professional and politician. She is the elected Woman MP for Sheema District and is not affiliated to any political party in Uganda. She succeeded NRM's Rosemary Nyakikongoro who in 2015 had defeated her in the party's primary elections in controversial circumstances. Atuhaire is also a former guild president for the University of East London and is a member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN) and the Society of Petroleum Engineers.
Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo is a Ugandan lawyer and judge. He has been the Chief Justice of Uganda since 20 August 2020.
Lucy Akello is a Ugandan social worker and politician, who served as the member of parliament for the Amuru District Women's Constituency in the 10th Parliament. She was elected back to the eleventh Parliament representing Amuru District under FDC political party. She is a member of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), and she serves as the shadow minister for labour, gender and social development.
Monica Kalyegira Mugenyi is a Ugandan lawyer and judge, who on 17 January 2024 was appointed as a member of the Supreme Court of Uganda.
Patrick Bitonder Birungi is a Ugandan economist, academic and corporate executive, who serves as the executive director of Uganda Development Corporation (UDC), effective 4 April 2019. UDC is a Uganda government-owned company, established in 1952, that is mandated to promote investment in the country and to manage government-owned investments in private businesses and industries.
Robinah Nabbanja is a Ugandan educator and politician who serves as the Prime Minister of Uganda, having been nominated to the office on 8 June 2021. She was formally confirmed by the Parliament on 21 June 2021. She replaced Ruhakana Rugunda, who was named to the post of Envoy For Special Duties In The Office Of The President of Uganda. She is the first female prime minister of Uganda.

Hodan Addou is a Somalian international civil servant who has been engaged with the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and its successor, UN Women in developing policies for women and women's empowerment since 1992. She has been a programme officer in Kenya; gender and conflict advisor in Burundi; the Regional Peace and Security Adviser for East, Central and Southern Africa; and Country Programme Director in Sudan, Zimbabwe, and Uganda. She is presently the Country Representative for UN Women in Tanzania.
