Malacology is the branch of invertebrate zoology that deals with the study of the Mollusca, the second-largest phylum of animals in terms of described species after the arthropods. Mollusks include snails and slugs, clams, and cephalopods, along with numerous other kinds, many of which have shells. One division of malacology, conchology, is devoted to the study of mollusk shells. Malacology derives from Ancient Greek μαλακός (malakós) 'soft', and -λογία (-logía).

The NMV created a European malacological society which later became the global society Unitas Malacologica.
Malacologica Bohemoslovaca is a peer-reviewed open access scientific journal covering all aspects of malacology. It was published by the Slovak Academy of Sciences since 2005. It is published by the Department of Botany and Zoology, Faculty of Science, Masaryk University since 2021. The editor-in-chief is Lucie Juřičková. Articles are published in Czech, Slovak or English, with an abstract in English. The journal is abstracted and indexed in The Zoological Record.
