Mitacs is a nonprofit national research organization that, in partnerships with Canadian academia, private industry and government, operates research and training programs in fields related to industrial and social innovation. [1] [2]

History

Mitacs was founded by Canadian mathematicians in 1999. The organization, whose name originally stood for "Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems", worked in the field of mathematical sciences and associated disciplines but has since expanded. In 2004, the Mitacs Accelerate program was launched [3] and has since supported over 10,000 internships nationally. [4] [5] https://www.ams.org/journals/notices/201908/rnoti-p1290.pdf [6]

Programs

As of late 2020, Mitacs operates six main programs: [7]

Accelerate

The organization's flagship program has supported over 10,000 research internships for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows since 2004 and has since replaced the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council's Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships Program. [5]

Elevate

The two-year program has the objective of providing postdoctoral fellows with professional and leadership development training while leading a long-term research project with a partner organization.[ citation needed ]

The international program supports two-way research collaboration between Canada and research partners abroad. [8] In 2016, the Globalink Research Internship program welcomed 565 students across Canada. [9]

Canadian Science Policy Fellowship

The program matches PhD-level researchers to government agencies to influence evidence-based policy-making. [10]

Entrepreneur International

The program offers travel grants to Canadian start-ups housed in university-linked incubators. The grant enables start-ups to connect with international incubators.[ citation needed ]

Business Strategy Internship

The program provides funding to students who develop innovative projects designed to help Canadian businesses. [11]

Funding

Mitacs is jointly funded by the federal and provincial Canadian governments, academic partners and research partners. [14] Between 2006 and 2015, the organization received $128 million in investments from the federal government. [15] In 2015, the federal government pledged $56.4 million over four years (starting in 2016) to Mitacs in support of graduate-level research and development internships. [5]

It supports research activities in a wide variety of disciplines, ranging from mathematical and physical sciences, to life sciences, and to humanities and social sciences. As an educational institute, it provides PhD training and scholarship through its English-language Taiwan International Graduate Program in biology, agriculture, chemistry, physics, informatics, and earth and environmental sciences. Academia Sinica is ranked 144th in Nature Publishing Index - 2014 Global Top 200 and 18th in Reuters World's Most Innovative Research Institutions of 2019. The current president since 2016 is James C. Liao, an expert in metabolic engineering, systems biology and synthetic biology.

A fellow is a member of an academy/learned society or a group of learned subjects that works together in pursuing mutual knowledge or practice. There are many different kinds of fellowships, which are awarded for different reasons in academia and industry. They often indicate a different level of scholarship.

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada is the major federal agency responsible for funding natural sciences and engineering research in Canada. NSERC directly funds university professors and students as well as Canadian companies to perform research and training. With funding from the Government of Canada, NSERC supports the research of over 41,000 students, trainees and professors at universities and colleges in Canada with an annual budget of CA$1.1 billion in 2015. Its current director is Alejandro Adem.

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada is a Canadian federal research-funding agency that promotes and supports post-secondary research and training in the humanities and social sciences. It is one of three major federal granting agencies that together are referred to as "the tri-council".

American Society for Engineering Education US professional organization for engineering education

The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) is a non-profit member association, founded in 1893, dedicated to promoting and improving engineering and engineering technology education. The purpose of ASEE is the advancement of education in all of its functions which pertain to engineering and allied branches of science and technology, including the processes of teaching and learning, counseling, research, extension services and public relations.

Mexican Academy of Sciences Academy of sciences

The Mexican Academy of Sciences(Academia Mexicana de Ciencias) is a non-profit organization comprising over 1800 distinguished Mexican scientists, attached to various institutions in the country, as well as a number of eminent foreign colleagues, including various Nobel Prize winners. The organization, which encompasses exact and natural sciences as well as the social sciences and humanities, is founded on the belief that education, based on the truth of scientific knowledge, is the only means, in the short and long term, of achieving the development of the Mexican spirit and national sovereignty.

Simula Research Laboratory is a Norwegian non-profit research organisation located at Fornebu, Bærum just outside Oslo, Norway.

John Mighton

John Mighton, OC is a Canadian mathematician, author, and playwright. He founded JUMP Math, a charitable organization that works to educate students in mathematics, in 2001. Mighton was born in Hamilton, Ontario on October 2, 1957 and lives in Toronto, Ontario with partner Pamela Sinha and daughter Chloe.

The Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences is an interdisciplinary research unit and graduate program at The University of Texas at Austin dedicated to advancing computational science and engineering through a variety of programs and research centers. The Institute currently supports 16 research centers, seven research groups and maintains the Computational Sciences, Engineering and Mathematics Program, a graduate degree program leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computational Science, Engineering and Mathematics. The interdisciplinary programs underway at the Oden Institute involve 123 faculty representing 23 academic departments and five schools and colleges. Oden Institute faculty hold positions in the Cockrell School of Engineering, College of Natural Sciences, Jackson School of Geosciences, Dell Medical School and McCombs School of Business. The Institute also supports the Peter O'Donnell, Jr. Postdoctoral Fellowship program and a program for visiting scholars through the J. Tinsley Oden Faculty Fellowship Research Fund. Organizationally, the Oden Institute reports to the Vice President for Research.

The Materials Research Society (MRS) is a non-profit, professional organization for materials researchers, scientists and engineers. Established in 1973, MRS is a member-driven organization of approximately 14,000 materials researchers from academia, industry and government.

Mining Industry Human Resources Council

The Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) is a not-for-profit organization that drives collaboration among mining and exploration companies, organized labour, contractors, educational institutions, industry associations and Indigenous groups to identify opportunities and address the human resource and labour market challenges facing the Canadian minerals and metals sector. MiHR contributes to the sustainability of the Canadian mining sector by collaborating with its stakeholders and communities of interest, to develop solutions tailored to human resources needs in the mining sector. Its vision is to build a diverse, sustainable, safe and skilled Canadian Mining workforce that is recognized globally.

Microsoft Innovation Center

Microsoft Innovation Centers (MICs) are local government organizations, universities, industry organizations, or software or hardware vendors who partner with Microsoft with a common goal to foster the growth of local software economies. These are state of the art technology facilities which are open to students, developers, IT professionals, entrepreneurs, startups and academic researchers. While each Center tunes its programs to local needs, they all provide similar content and services designed to accelerate technology advances and stimulate local software economies through skills and professional training, industry partnerships and innovation. As of 10 September 2010, there are 115 Microsoft Innovation Centers worldwide, most of which are open to the public. Recently it was reported that Microsoft had proposed to build about 100 innovation centers in India, and several in China. Some innovation centers have also started to develop in Pakistan.

The University of Toronto School of Public Policy and Governance (SPPG) was a public policy and public administration school located in Toronto, Ontario. On April 6, 2018, the University of Toronto announced that the School of Public Policy and Governance and the Munk School of Global Affairs would merge to become the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy. The merger took effect on July 1, 2018. The Master of Public Policy programme and many public policy scholars remain headquartered in the Canadiana Gallery at 14 Queen's Park Crescent West.

Israel Innovation Authority

The Israel Innovation Authority previously known as the Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS) of Israel's Ministry of Economy is the support arm of the Israeli government, charged with fostering the development of industrial R&D within the State of Israel.

Arvind Gupta is an Indo-Canadian computer scientist who was the 13th President of the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the former CEO of Mitacs Canada.

Startup India is an initiative of the Government of India. The campaign was first announced by Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi during his speech in 15 August 2015 address from the Red Fort, in New Delhi.

Jianhong Wu is a Canadian applied mathematician and the founding Director of the Laboratory for Industrial and Applied Mathematics at York University. He holds the life-time title of University Distinguished Research Professor, and has been a senior Canada Research Chair in Industrial and Applied Mathematics at York University since 2001. In 2017, he was awarded the NSERC/Sanofi Industrial Research Chair in Vaccine Mathematics, Modelling and Manufacturing.

York Entrepreneurship Development Institute (YEDI) is a venture fund, startup accelerator, incubator and entrepreneurial community located within York University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. YEDI facilitates collaboration between students, alumni, and academic and business leaders. The organization was founded in 2013 by businessman Dr. Marat Ressin, a native of Russia with close ties to the Jewish community in Canada. The main educational facilities of YEDI are located inside the Schulich School of Business complex at York University's Keele campus.
