Mitch Joel (b. May 1971 [1] ) is an entrepreneur and writer. He was president of Twist Image, a digital marketing agency that was purchased by WPP in 2014 and president and a founding partner of Distort Entertainment. Currently, he is a professional keynote speaker and the co-founder of ThinkersOne (a business that offers bite-sized and personalized video content from thought leaders).
Joel grew up in Montreal, with three brothers. His family was an early adopter of computers, something that fascinated him. [2] He graduated from the pre-university music program at Vanier College (he played bass), [3] then he quit his philosophy studies at Concordia University after less than a semester, to start a publishing career. [1] He worked in Montreal as a freelance music journalist and as publisher/editor of two music magazines, Arena Rock and Enrage. [3] His first interview, in 1989, was of Tommy Lee. [4]
Joel worked in 1999 and 2000 at Mamma.com, a meta search engine started in 1996, [5] where he held the title of Director, Sponsorship and Advertising. [6] In January 2001 he became Director of Marketing at Airborne Entertainment, a mobile content provider headquartered in Montreal. [7] He credits a conference called, The Power Within, in 2002 for the change in direction that lead to his success; [3] he has been a speaker at a number of the organization's conferences since then. [2]
In 2002, Joel joined Twist Image, a digital marketing company that was then two years old. He was president of the company, one of four equal partners. [1] He began blogging in September 2003, posting at Six Pixels of Separation – The Twist Image Blog. In May, 2006, he launched a weekly podcast. Both the blog and podcast focus on the intersection of brands, consumers and technology.
In July 2006, Joel was named one of the twenty most influential authorities in the world on the topic of blog marketing by the UK-based research firm Onalytica. [8] In January 2007, Marketing Magazine called Joel "Canada's Rock Star of Digital Marketing." [9] [10] In May 2009 he was named to the Top 40 under 40 in Canada. [2]
By mid-2009, Twist Image had a second office, in Toronto, and employed 65 people. [2] By October 2009 it had 90 employees. [1] By the end of 2009, its clients included Home Depot, Microsoft, Scotiabank, TD Canada Trust, Fujifilm, and Dairy Farmers of Canada. [11]
In 2007 and 2008, Joel was the host of Foreword Thinking: The Business And Motivational Book Review Podcast. In 2008 and 2009, he wrote a business column for the Montreal Gazette and the Vancouver Sun. In 2009, he authored a book by the same name as the blog and the podcast: Six Pixels of Separation. [1] In 2009 and 2010 he had a column in enRoute , the in-flight magazine of Air Canada.
In May 2011, the Canadian Marketing Association elected Joel as the chair of its board of directors for 2011 and 2012. [12] In 2013, Joel published Ctrl Alt Delete: Reboot Your Business. Reboot Your Life. Your Future Depends on It. [13] The book covers five technology and marketing trends that Joel thinks business leaders must embrace. [14]
In 2014, Twist Image was sold to WPP. The company rebranded as Mirum and still sits within the Wunderman Thompson division of WPP.
Mitch left the company in 2019. He is currently a professional speaker, writer, investor and advisor.
In 2021, Mitch was named to Thinkers50 Radar class for 2021.
In 2022, Mitch launched ThinkersOne - an online platform where companies can buy bite-sized and personalized thought leadership video experiences.
Joel is a partner, with Greg Below, in the record label Distort Entertainment. [4] The label, located in Toronto, Ontario, specializes in heavy music, hardcore, and post-hardcore. Artists and groups currently or previously represented by the label include Alexisonfire, Cancer Bats, Johnny Truant, Step Kings, and The Bronx.
Joel is married; he and his wife have three children. [2]

J. Walter Thompson (JWT) was an advertisement holding company incorporated in 1896 by American advertising pioneer James Walter Thompson. The company was acquired in 1987 by multinational holding company WPP plc, and in November 2018, WPP merged J. Walter Thompson with fellow agency Wunderman to form Wunderman Thompson.
The Million Dollar Homepage is a website conceived in 2005 by Alex Tew, a student from Wiltshire, England, to raise money for his university education. The home page consists of a million pixels arranged in a 1000 × 1000 pixel grid; the image-based links on it were sold for $1 per pixel in 10 × 10 blocks. The purchasers of these pixel blocks provided tiny images to be displayed on them, a URL to which the images were linked, and a slogan to be displayed when hovering a cursor over the link. The aim of the website was to sell all of the pixels in the image, thus generating a million dollars of income for the creator. The Wall Street Journal has commented that the site inspired other websites that sell pixels.

Cancer Bats is a Canadian hardcore punk band from Toronto, Ontario. To date, they have released seven studio albums and six extended plays; with their most recent LP, Psychic Jailbreak, having been released on 15 April 2022. The band is currently composed of lead vocalist Liam Cormier, drummer Mike Peters and bassist/guitarist Jaye R. Schwarzer. The band are also currently joined by touring guitarists Stephen Harrison and Nick Sherman, following the departure of founding guitarist Scott Middleton in 2021. Cancer Bats take a wide variety of influences from heavy metal sub-genres and fuse them into hardcore and punk rock, and also include elements of Southern metal. Their sound has been likened to sludge metal, as well as to that of metalcore bands such as Converge and Hatebreed. The members of Cancer Bats have also toured and recorded as a Black Sabbath tribute band under the name Bat Sabbath.
Jeff MacArthur is a Canadian netcasting and tech personality. MacArthur co-created commandN.tv, a technology/social media video podcast with his sister, Amber MacArthur, and has acted as co-host and business manager for the production since its inception in 2005 until its hiatus in 2013, with his segments regularly featured on television through G4TechTV's series, Torrent. Launched on September 22, 2005, by Kevin Croy, the site uses MediaWiki software to maintain a user-created database of information. The site's content is under a Creative Commons license (by-nc-nd), which means that it is available free to the public, but cannot be used for commercial purposes and should not be modified by people who are not part of the community of the website. Lostpedia is supported by revenue from advertising; the site has not made information regarding financial details public. As of April 2019, the site contains an estimated 7,380 articles. On December 18, 2008, the site became a part of Wikia.
