Mizuno Ekiden is an annual marathon race in Singapore that incorporates the ekiden concept, a Japanese long-distance relay race concept. [1] Organised by Mizuno Singapore, [2] Mizuno Corporation's regional headquarters for Asia Pacific, [3] it is the first dedicated ekiden race in Singapore with no individual runner categories. [4] The race is also Japanese themed with a matsuri (Japanese festival) race village at the finish line. [1] The race village features Japanese cultural performances, booths selling Japanese cuisine and traditional games. [5]

Race mechanics

Runners race in teams of four, each covering a quarter of the marathon distance. [1] During the race, runners wear the traditional tasuki sash. After the first runner finishes his leg of the race, he enters the transition area where his teammates are waiting, and passes on the sash to the next runner in his team. This repeats until the fourth runner finishes his leg. There are three categories: 42.195 km Open Category, 21.1 km Open Category, and 21.1 km Corporate Category. [2]

2015

Mizuno Ekiden's inaugural race was held on 18 July 2015 at The Meadow, Gardens by the Bay. Infinitus was the appointed events organiser. [5]

2016

The 2016 race took place on 16 July, 4pm at The Promontory @ Marina Bay. [6] The race is also held in conjunction with SJ50, a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Singapore–Japan normalized ties. [7]

2017

The third edition of Mizuno Ekiden took place on 19 August, 4pm at The Promontory @ Marina Bay. Close to 4,000 runners participated in the race, which flagged off at 4.30pm. In the 21.1 km corporate category, a team from the Singapore Prison Service, consisting of Cleeve Mu, Ramesh Palaniandy, Yew Meng Tan and Zainul Arrifin came out tops, completing the race in 1hr 24min to walk away with over $2,000 worth of cash and vouchers, and retained their title for the second year running. Mark Calton, Takuya Sawada, Creighton Connolly, Yuta Suda won the 42.195 km open category, clocking in at 2hr 36min while team F1 Runners won the 21.1 km open category (1 hr 20min). [8]

Kayoko Fukushi is a Japanese long-distance runner, who specializes in the 5000, 10,000 metres and marathon. Fukushi represented Japan at the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. She was the bronze medallist in the marathon at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics. She holds a marathon best of 2:22:17 hours.

Shizo Kanakuri Japanese marathon runner

Shizo Kanakuri was a Japanese marathon runner and one of the early leaders of track and field athletics in Japan. He has been celebrated as the "father of marathon" in Japan.

International Chiba Ekiden

The International Chiba Ekiden was an annual team road running competition held in Chiba, Japan in late November. The marathon relay race, or ekiden as it is known in Japan, is one of the prominent annual races of its kind. The competition is split into six legs which combine to make up the marathon distance of 42.195 km. The Chiba Ekiden was first held in 1988 and featured separate competitions for both men and women. Since 2007, each competing country selects three men and three women for their team. The legs are divided as follows: 5 km (men), 5 km (women), 10 km (men), 5 km (women), 10 km (men), and 7.195 km (women).

Ryoko Kizaki Japanese long-distance runner

Ryoko Kizaki is a Japanese long-distance runner who competes in marathon and half marathon races. She won the 2011 Yokohama Women's Marathon in a personal best time of 2:26:32 hours. She is a three-time participant at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships and a two-time medallist at the Summer Universiade.

Philes Moora Ongori is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes in half marathon and marathon events.

Josephat Muchiri Ndambiri is a Kenyan long-distance runner. He represented his country at the World Championships in Athletics in 2007.

Hakone Ekiden (箱根駅伝), officially called the Tokyo-Hakone Round-Trip College Ekiden Race, is one of the most prominent university ekiden races of the year held between Tokyo and Hakone in Japan on January 2 and 3. The race is telecast on Nippon Television.

Tomo Morimoto Japanese long-distance runner

Tomo Morimoto is a female long-distance runner from Japan who specialises in the marathon.

Mekubo Job Mogusu is a Kenyan long distance runner who specialises in road running, particularly the half marathon. An emigrant to Japan, he has won the Sapporo Half Marathon on three occasions and the Kagawa Marugame Half Marathon twice – he is the course record holder for both of the races. Mogusu was also part of the Kenyan ekiden marathon relay team which set the world record time of 1:57:06 at the 2005 Chiba Ekiden. He has a half marathon best of 59 minutes and 48 seconds and competed at the 2008 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships.

Charlotte Purdue British long-distance runner

Charlotte Purdue is a British long-distance runner who competes in the Marathon and Half Marathon, as well as cross country running for Aldershot, Farnham and District Athletics Club. After winning a number of youth titles at national level, she had her first international success at the European Cross Country Championships, winning medals in the junior races of 2007 and 2008. She was also the best European junior at the World Cross Country Championships those years.

Hitomi Niiya Japanese long-distance runner

Hitomi Niiya is a Japanese professional long-distance runner who competes in track, cross country running and marathon races. Niiya competed for Japan at the 2012 Summer Olympics. She is a two-time silver medallist at the Asian Athletics Championships and has represented Japan three times at the World Athletics Championships. She represents Team Toyota Industries in national competition.

Inter-Prefectural Womens Ekiden

The Inter-Prefectural Women's Ekiden is an annual women's ekiden for Japanese runners held in January in Kyoto Prefecture. The course has a looped point-to-point format over the marathon distance of 42.195 km and begins and ends within the Nishikyogoku Athletic Stadium.

Atsushi Sato Japanese long-distance runner

Atsushi Sato is a Japanese long-distance runner who competes in marathon races. He is the Asian record holder in the half marathon with his time of 60:25 minutes. His marathon best of 2:07:13 hours is the fourth fastest by a Japanese athlete. He is married to Miho Sato, who was a 2004 Japanese Olympian.

Sally Chepyego Kaptich is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes mainly in track and road running events.

Simon Maina Munyi is a Kenyan former long-distance runner who competed in track and road running events. In his first year of international competition, he was the gold medallist in the 10,000 metres at the 1998 Commonwealth Games.

Kenji Takao is a Japanese running coach and former long-distance runner who competed mainly in the 10,000 metres. His personal best for the distance was 27:56.05 minutes, set in 1995. He was the 1998 Asian Games champion in the 10,000 m.

Everline Kemunto Kimwei is a Kenyan long-distance runner. Her greatest achievement was a team gold medal at the 2007 IAAF World Road Running Championships, where she was sixth. She is joint-holder of the African record for the ekiden marathon relay, courtesy of her winning run for Kenya at the 2006 Chiba Ekiden.
