MdeAS Architects, formerly Moed de Armas & Shannon Architects, is a New York-based architecture firm known for modern design focusing on the quality of natural materials, intelligent programming, and the redefining of Class A buildings, interiors, and public spaces. Founded in 1991, the award-winning studio is led by principals Dan Shannon, Raúl de Armas and Mike Zaborski.

History

Partners Leon Moed and Raul de Armas founded the firm in 1991 after leaving their positions as senior partners at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Dan Shannon, an associate at SOM, joined Moed de Armas Architects at its founding. In 1997, he became a partner and the firm changed its name to Moed de Armas & Shannon. Mike Zaborski joined the firm in 1998 and became a partner in 2012. The firm officially changed its name to MdeAS Architects in October 2014. They have jointly completed 510 Madison Avenue, [1] Gotham Center, [2] the rejuvenation of the GM Building Plaza, [3] and the redevelopments of 100 Park Avenue and 330 Madison Avenue. The firm also designed a glass spandrel system to replace the deteriorating marble façade of Canada's tallest building, First Canadian Place [4] in Toronto.

The firm has a particular focus on facade replacements, public spaces and lobby renovations. [5]

First Canadian Place is a skyscraper in the Financial District of Toronto, Ontario, at the northwest corner of King and Bay streets, and serves as the global operational executive office of the Bank of Montreal. At 298 m (978 ft), it is the tallest building in Canada, the 31st tallest building in North America, and the 105th tallest in the world. It is also the third tallest free-standing structure in Canada, after the CN Tower and the Inco Superstack chimney in Sudbury, Ontario. The building is owned by Manulife Financial Corporation in addition to a private consortium of investors including CPP Investments. The building is managed by Brookfield Properties.

The Fuller Building is a skyscraper at 57th Street and Madison Avenue in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. Designed by Walker & Gillette, it was erected between 1928 and 1929. The building is named for its original main occupant, the Fuller Construction Company, which moved from the Flatiron Building.

550 Madison Avenue is a postmodern skyscraper on Madison Avenue between 55th and 56th Streets in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. Designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee with associate architect Simmons Architects, the building is a 647-foot-tall (197-meter), 37-story office tower with a facade made of pink granite. It was completed in 1984 as the headquarters of AT&T Corp. and later became the American headquarters of Sony. A four-story granite annex to the west was demolished and replaced with a shorter annex in the early 2020s.

The Hotel Pennsylvania was a hotel at 401 Seventh Avenue in Manhattan, across from Pennsylvania Station and Madison Square Garden in New York City. Opened in 1919, it was once the largest hotel in the world. It remained the fourth largest in New York City until it closed permanently on April 1, 2020. After years of unsuccessful preservation battles, it was demolished in 2023. The hotel is to be replaced by 15 Penn Plaza, a 68-story tower.

Park Avenue Plaza is an office building at 55 East 52nd Street in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of New York City. The 575-foot (175 m) tall, 44-story building was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) for development company Fisher Brothers and was completed in 1981. Despite its name, the building is not actually on Park Avenue, although it abuts the Racquet and Tennis Club building along the avenue. Rather, the building is in the middle of a city block, with entrances on 52nd and 53rd Streets.
