Molakalmuru is a taluk in Chitradurga district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is near the border of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. It borders the Rayadurg taluk of Ananthpur district of Andhra Pradesh. Legend has it that its name means "broken knees" in Kannada, referencing a battle between the native Indians and the British in which, due to the rocky and hilly terrain, British soldiers suffered many broken knees in their defeat. The town is famous for the unique Molkalmuru sarees manufactured here.

Demographics

As of the 2011 Indian census, [1] Molakalmuru had a population of 15,797. Males constitute 50.35% of the population and females 49.65%. Molakalmuru has an average literacy rate of 71.44%, lower than the national average of 74.04%. Male literacy is 77.66%, and female literacy is 65.13%. 11.77% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Molakalmuru silk sarees are the traditional sarees that are woven in the region. Molakalmuru sarees are also called Karnataka Kanchipuram. Recently they have been granted a Geographical Indication tag [3] and its tag number is 53. [4]

The Vedavathi is a river in India. It rises from the Bababudanagiri Mountains of Western Ghats and flows through the states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Two rivers, the Veda and Avathi, arise in the eastern part of the Sahyadri Hill range in Bababudangiri mountain ranges, flow east, and join near Pura to form the Vedavathi River. From there the river flows through Kadur Taluk Of Chikkamagalur District. Then it enters Hosadurga Taluk, Hiriyur Taluk and Challakere Taluk of Chitradurga district, respectively.

Kadamba architecture was a style of temple architecture founded by Mayurasharma in the 4th century AD in Karnataka, India. Kadambas created new style of architecture which was the basis of the Hoysalas style of architecture, developed original school of sculpture, was the forerunner of series of South Indian sculptors. Many temples at Aihole, Badami and Hampi are built in Kadamba style.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kannada inscriptions</span>

About 25,000 inscriptions found in Karnataka and states near by belongs to Kannada rulers like Kadambas, Western Ganga Dynasty, Rashtrakuta, Chalukya, Hoysala and Vijayanagara Empire. Many inscriptions related to Jainism are unearthed. The inscriptions generally found are on stone (Shilashasana) or copper plates (Tamarashasana). The Kannada inscriptions found on historical Hero Stone, coin and temple wall, piller, tablet and rock edict. These Inscription have contributed towards Kannada literature and helped to classify as Proto Kannada, Pre Old Kannada, Old Kannada, Middle Kannada and New Kannada. Inscriptions depicts culture, tradition and prosperity of those era. The world wide recognized literature Ramayana and Mahabharata are transferred through generation by these Inscription Hazara Rama Temple and Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple are the best example.
