Music Show (foaled 18 April 2007) is an Irish-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare, who was rated one of the best fillies of her generation in the world in 2010. She showed great promise as a two-year-old in 2009, when she won three of her four races including the Group Two Rockfel. In the following year, she performed consistently in the highest class, winning the Nell Gwyn Stakes and the Falmouth Stakes, as well as finishing second in the Prix Rothschild, third in the Irish 1000 Guineas and Matron Stakes and fourth in the Coronation Stakes and Sun Chariot Stakes. In the following year, she failed to reproduce her best form and was well-beaten in all five of her starts.

Background

Music Show is a bay mare with no white markings bred in Ireland by the Darley Stud. She was sired by Noverre, a top-class miles who won the Sussex Stakes in 2001 and finished second or third in ten other Group One races. [2] As a breeding stallion, his other good winners included Le Havre (winner of the Prix du Jockey Club), I'm A Dreamer (Beverly D. Stakes), Miss Lucifer (Challenge Stakes), Summit Surge (York Stakes) and Enora (Preis der Diana). [3] Music Show's dam Dreamboat showed modest ability as a racehorse, winning one minor race at Redcar Racecourse in 1995. [4] She was a granddaughter of the Canadian Champion Three-Year-Old Filly Kadar who was in turn a daughter of the outstanding Canadian racemare Square Angel whose other descendants included Swain and Fantastic Light. [5]

In September 2008 the filly was sent to the Tattersalls Ireland sale but failed to reach her reserve price of €4,000. In the following May she was entered in the Goresbridge "breeze-up" sale (in which two-year-olds are required to gallop in public before being auctioned) and was bought for €16,000 by the bloodstock agent Gill Richardson. [6] During her track career, Music Show raced in the colours of Jaber Abdullah and was trained at West Ilsley by Mick Channon.

Racing career

2009: two-year-old season

Music Show's debut came at Bath Racecourse on 9 August when she contested a maiden auction race. She was ridden by Tony Culhane and started at odds of 6/1 against thirteen opponents. Carrying top weight of 124 pounds, she raced towards the rear of the field before taking the lead a furlong out and winning by two and a half lengths from the favourite Zelos Dream. [7] At the same course, over the same five and a half furlong distance three weeks later the filly started odds-on for a novice race (for horses with no more than one previous win) in which she was again partnered by Culhane. She took the lead a furlong out and drew away from her four opponents to win "easily" by three and a quarter lengths from Ramarama. [8] Alan Munro took over from Culhane when Music Show was moved up in class for the Group Three Firth of Clyde Stakes at Ayr Racecourse on 19 September. Starting the 5/1 choice in the betting she finished tenth of the thirteen runners behind Distinctive, appearing disadvantaged by a poor draw which saw her racing on the unfavoured stands-side of the course.

Despite her defeat at Ayr, Music Show was stepped up again for the Group Two Rockfel Stakes over seven furlongs at Newmarket Racecourse on 17 October when she was ridden by Kieren Fallon. The Oh So Sharp Stakes winner Tabassum started favourite ahead of Distinctive, Dubawi Heights (third in the Lowther Stakes) and the Barry Hills-trained Champagnelifestyle with Music Show a 25/1 outsider in an eleven-runner field. After racing in mid-division, Music Show was switched to the right in the last quarter mile and produced a strong late run, overtaking the Irish filly Atasari and the favoured Tabassum in the final strides to by a neck and three quarters of a length. [9] After the race Channon said "We thought should win at Ayr and then the plan was then to go for Chevley Park. However everything went wrong and we had to go back to the drawing board. After that performance we know exactly where she will be going [the 1000 Guineas]. We got lucky for Jaber Abdullah [owner] again and Kieren gave her a great ride." [10]

2010: three-year-old season

Music Show began her second season in the Nell Gwyn Stakes (a major trial race for the 1000 Guineas) over seven furlongs at Newmarket in April. She started second favourite behind Atasari in an eleven-runner field and as in her previous races she was held up in the early running before making a strong late run. She went to the front approaching the last furlong and was "driven out" by Fallon to win by half a length from Blue Maiden. [11] Mick Channon commented "You would have to be pleased with that as she has got very lazy this year and I wanted to get a run into her... I have always thought she had a lot of class and Kieren didn't mess about – he knew what he had under him". [12] Ryan Moore took over for the filly's next three races starting with the 2010 1000 Guineas on 2 May in which she started the 7/1 third favourite. The field split into two groups on either side of the course and although Music Show proved the best of the group on the stands side (the left side from the jockey's viewpoint) she finished sixth overall behind Jacqueline Quest (disqualified), Special Duty and three others who raced on the opposite side. [13] Three weeks later she started favourite for the Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh but despite a strong late run she finished third behind Bethrah and Anna Sallai, beaten less than half a length in a "blanket finish". [14]

Music Show returned to England for the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot on 18 June. After being held up as usual she made steady progress in the straight without ever looking likely to win and finished fourth behind Lillie Langtry, Gile Na Greine and Jacqueline Quest. On 7 July Music Show was matched against older fillies and mares for the first time in the Group One Falmouth Stakes over one mile on the July Course at Newmarket in which she was ridden by Richard Hughes and started at odds of 13/2. Lillie Langtry (the 9/4 favourite), Special Duty and Gile Na Greine were again in opposition whilst the other three-year-old in the field was the Jersey Stakes winner Rainfall. The senior contingent comprised Strawberrydaiquiri (Dahlia Stakes, Windsor Forest Stakes), Spacious (2009 Windsor Forest Stakes) and Lahaleeb (E. P. Taylor Stakes). She raced towards the rear of the field as first Strawberrydaiquiri and then Spacious set the pace, but began to make progress in the last quarter mile. After being switched to the right to obtain a clear run she took the lead inside the final furlong and drew away in the closing strides to win by two lengths from Spacious. [15] After the race Channon said "We always believed she was the best three-year-old filly in the country, but sometimes the faith falls away; but with this filly it never did. In both Guineas she was trapped out wide and then when she was beaten at Ascot, I was in bits." [16] Hughes commented "They went nice and fast today and she did it very well. Mick kept telling me she'd had no luck in running and I'd been watching her, she was forced wide at Ascot because of her draw but she was very good today." [17]

She was then sent to France for the Prix Rothschild over 1600 metres at Deauville Racecourse in August in which she was matched against the outstanding French racemare Goldikova. In a change of tactics, she raced in second place before taking the lead but was overtaken 400 metres out by Goldikova and beaten three lengths into second place. On 4 September Music Show started favourite for the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown Racecourse in which she was ridden by Fran Berry and finished third behind Lillie Langtry and Spacious. She was reunited with Hughes for the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket and again started favourite but finished fourth of the eleven runners behind Sahpresa, Strawberrydaiquiri and Rainfall.

In the 2010 World Thoroughbred Rankings Music Show was rated the joint-fourth-best three-year-old filly in the world behind Lily of the Valley, Sarafina and Snow Fairy. [18]

2011: four-year-old season

On her 2011 debut Music Show was matched against male opponents for the first time since 2009 and finished fourth of the five runners behind Dick Turpin in the Sandown Mile. She then returned to racing against her own sex but failed to win in four subsequent races. She finished a remote fourth to Midday in the Middleton Stakes over ten and a half furlongs at York in May and then finished unplaced in the Windsor Forest Stakes at Royal Ascot. In September Music Show was sent to Turkey for the Istanbul European Capital of Culture Trophy at Veliefendi Race Course and finished fourth behind the German-trained favourite Vanjura. Later that month she made her final appearance when she contested the Sun Chariot Stakes for the second time. Ridden by Hughes she was a 16/1 outsider and finished fifth of the eight runners behind Sahpresa. [19]

Ameerat is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from August 2000 to October 2001 she ran seven times and won two races. After winning once from three starts as a two-year-old, she won the Classic 1000 Guineas at Newmarket Racecourse on her first appearance of the 2001 season. Her subsequent career was disappointing, as she finished unplaced in her three remaining races. At the end of her three-year-old season she was retired from racing to become a broodmare. Ameerat was not regarded as one of the better classic winners.

Shadayid was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from June 1990 to November 1991 she ran eleven times winning five races and being placed five times. Shadayid was one of the leading two-year-old fillies in Europe in 1990, winning all three of her races including the Group One Prix Marcel Boussac at the Longchamp. After winning the Fred Darling Stakes on her three-year-old debut, Shadayid took her unbeaten run to five by winning the Classic 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. Although she never won again, she finished second in the Coronation Stakes and the Sussex Stakes and third in the Haydock Sprint Cup and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Shadayid was retired from racing to become a broodmare at the end of her three-year-old season after finishing seventh in the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Rockfel British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Rockfel was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare, best known for winning two Classics in 1938. In a career which lasted from July 1937 until May 1939 she ran thirteen times and won eight races. Rockfel began her career at the lowest level, being beaten in a selling race, but improved to become recognised as one of the best British racemares of the 20th century. In 1938 she was the dominant three-year-old in England, winning the 1000 Guineas over one mile at Newmarket and the Oaks over one and a half miles at Epsom. In the autumn she defeated colts in the Champion Stakes and the Aintree Derby and was retired after winning her only race as a four-year-old. She produced one foal before dying in November 1941.

Musical Bliss (1986–2006) was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare who won the classic 1000 Guineas in 1989. In a racing career lasting from July 1988 until August 1989, the filly ran five times and won three races. In 1988, Musical Bliss won both her races including the Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse. On her first appearance as a three-year-old, she won the 1000 Guineas but ran poorly in her two other races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. Her record as a broodmare was mixed.

Sky Lantern (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Sky Lantern is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. She was one of the leading European two-year-old fillies of 2012 when she won the Moyglare Stud Stakes in Ireland. In May 2013 she won the 200th running of the 1000 Guineas. She followed up with a win in the Coronation Stakes, and recovered from a controversial defeat by Elusive Kate in the Falmouth Stakes to record a fourth Group One win in the Sun Chariot Stakes. She remained in training as a four-year-old but failed to reproduce her best form, finishing unplaced in three races.

Legatissimo British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Legatissimo is a British-bred Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. After showing some promise as a juvenile, she showed marked improvement in the spring of 2015 and recorded her first major success in the 1000 Guineas. On her next appearance she was narrowly beaten when favourite for The Oaks. After another narrow defeat in the Pretty Polly Stakes she returned to top form to win the Nassau Stakes and the Matron Stakes

Exclusive was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a juvenile, she won a strongly-contested race on her debut and the finished third in the Fillies' Mile. As a three-year-old in 1998 she finished third in the classic 1000 Guineas before recording her biggest win in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. After her retirement from racing, she became a very successful broodmare, being the ancestor of major winners including Chic and Integral.

Maids Causeway is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2004 she won three of her seven races including the Sweet Solera Stakes and Rockfel Stakes as well as being placed in both the May Hill Stakes and the Fillies' Mile. As a three-year-old she finished second in the classic 1000 Guineas and then recorded her biggest win in the Coronation Stakes. At the end of the year she was bought by Sheikh Mohammed and retired from racing to become a broodmare. Her name has always been rendered without an apostrophe, consistently with the street of that name alongside Midsummer Common in Cambridge.

Seazun is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from April 1999 until September 2000 she won two of her ten races. As a two-year-old she was one of the best juvenile fillies of her generation, recording a victory over a strong field in the Cheveley Park Stakes after finishing second in the Sirenia Stakes. She failed to win in the following year but finished second in the Fred Darling Stakes and fourth in both the 1000 Guineas and the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Since her retirement from racing she has had some success as a dam of winners in Japan.

Nahoodh Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Nahoodh is an Irish-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was sold as a foal and again as a yearling before entering training with Mick Channon. As a two-year-old she was beaten in her first two starts before recording her first major win in the Lowther Stakes. In the following year she finished fifth in the 1000 Guineas and was the beaten favourite in the Irish 1000 Guineas before being transferred to the stable of Mark Johnston. In July 2008 she recorded her biggest victory when she won the Group One Falmouth Stakes and went on to finish fourth in the Prix Rothschild and second in the Matron Stakes. She was retired from the end of the season and has had some success as a dam of winners.

Ensconse was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In 1988 she showed considerable promise as she won a twenty-five runner maiden race and the Blue Seal Stakes in her two racecourse appearances. In the following year she won the Nell Gwyn Stakes and finished fourth when favourite for the 1000 Guineas before recording her biggest success when winning the Irish 1000 Guineas. In her two remaining starts she was unlucky in running when sixth in the Prix de Diane and ran second in the Child Stakes. She was retired from racing at the end of the year to become a broodmare but produced only two foals, neither of whom had any success on the racecourse.

Nicer was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed promise as a two-year-old in 1992 although she won only one minor race from five attempts. She reached her peak in the following spring when she won the Masaka Stakes before recording her biggest victory in the Irish 1000 Guineas. She was beaten in her next four races and was then exported to the United States where she failed to win. She was retired to become a broodmare but her foals made very little impact on the racecourse.

Mehthaaf was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed great promise as a two-year-old in 1993, winning on her second racecourse appearance and going on to finish third in both the Lowther Stakes and the Prix Marcel Boussac. As a three-year-old she won the Nell Gwyn Stakes and ran fourth when favourite for the 1000 Guineas before winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas. Later in the season she produced arguably her best performance with an emphatic victory over male opponents in the Celebration Mile. She also ran third in the Coronation Stakes and Prix Jacques Le Marois as well as finishing fourth in the Champion Stakes. After her retirement from racing she had considerable success as a broodmare.

Hula Angel was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas in 1999. As a two-year-old she showed steady improvement in six races, winning a maiden on her third appearance and finishing third in the Oh So Sharp Stakes before winning the Group Two Rockfel Stakes. In the following spring she finished sixth in the 1000 Guineas before recording her biggest win in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh. She was well beaten in two subsequent races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. Hula Angel finished ahead of the 1,000 Guineas winner Wince in three of their four racecourse meetings. She has had some success a dam of winners.

Samitar is a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare who raced in four countries and won major races in England, Ireland and the United States. She showed good form as a juvenile in 2011, winning the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot and a valuable sales race at Newmarket Racecourse as well as being placed in the May Hill Stakes and the Fillies' Mile. In the following year she recorded an upset win in the Irish 1,000 Guineas before being sent to race in North America where she won the Garden City Stakes. She remained in training as a four-year-old and won stakes races at Belmont Park and Saratoga.

Roly Poly is an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2016 she won three of her eight races including the Grangecon Stud Stakes and the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes as well as finishing second in the Cheveley Park Stakes and the Lowther Stakes. In the following year she proved herself to be a top-class performer over one mile, recording Group 1 victories in the Falmouth Stakes, Prix Rothschild and Sun Chariot Stakes and running second in both the Irish 1,000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes.

Billesdon Brook British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Billesdon Brook is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. She was a useful and consistent juvenile in 2017, winning three races including the Prestige Stakes and being placed on four of her other five starts. In the following spring she ran fourth on her seasonal debut and then recorded a 66/1 upset win in the 1000 Guineas. She failed to win again that year but returned to form in 2019 to win the Queen Charlotte Fillies' Stakes, Oak Tree Stakes and Sun Chariot Stakes. As a five-year-old she was unable to win in six attempts but finished second in four races including the Falmouth Stakes.

Valentine Waltz was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she was initially trained in Ireland where she failed to win in four races although she did finish third in the Marble Hill Stakes. Later in the year she was moved to England and improved, winning a minor race and being placed in both the Rockingham Stakes and the Rockfel Stakes. In the following year she developed into one of the best fillies of her generation in Europe, winning the Nell Gwyn Stakes and the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches as well as finishing third in both the 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a broodmare and had modest success as a dam of winners.

Hermosa (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Hermosa is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. She showed very good form as a juvenile in 2018 when she won two of her seven races including the Weld Park Stakes as well as finishing second in both the Fillies' Mile and the Critérium International and third in the Moyglare Stud Stakes. She improved in the following spring to record Group 1 victories in the 1000 Guineas and the Irish 1000 Guineas.

Veracious is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. She showed promise as a juvenile in 2017 when she won the second of her two starts and went on to demonstrate high class form in the following year, winning the Atalanta Stakes and running third in both the Coronation Stakes and the Nassau Stakes. As a four-year-old in 2019 she recorded her biggest success when she took the Falmouth Stakes.
