The Myeongnyang Strait (also known as Uldolmok Strait;meaning Screaming Strait),just off the southwest corner of South Korea, separates Jindo Island from the mainland. It also separates the administrative district of Haenam County (on the mainland) from Jindo County. At its narrowest point,it is about 293 metres (961 ft) across. The strait experiences tidal water speeds that exceed 6.5 m/s (21.3 ft/s). [1]
The strait has proved important at several points in Korean history. The seclusion it provided allowed the Sambyeolcho Rebellion to take refuge here in 1271. In 1597,during the Imjin War,the Korean admiral,Yi Sun-sin,achieved a decisive victory in the Battle of Myeongnyang although he was massively outnumbered by the Japanese fleet. [2] Tidal forces mean that the currents of the Myeongnyang Strait reverse direction roughly every three hours.
Today, the strait is spanned by the Jindo (island) bridge,South Korea's longest cable-stayed bridge. [3] There is also a memorial to Yi Sun-sin on the coast.
The Myeongnyang Strait, during the lifetime of Yi Sun-Shin,was also known as 'Uldolmok,' or 'the Roaring Channel,' most likely because of the powerful tides of the channel, which are especially loud during springtime.
The Yellow Sea is a marginal sea of the Western Pacific Ocean located between mainland China and the Korean Peninsula, and can be considered the northwestern part of the East China Sea. It is one of four seas named after common colour terms, and its name is descriptive of the golden-yellow color of the silt-ridden water discharged from major rivers.
The Sea of Japan
is the marginal sea between the Japanese archipelago,Sakhalin, the Korean Peninsula, and the mainland of the Russian Far East. The Japanese archipelago separates the sea from the Pacific Ocean. Like the Mediterranean Sea,it has almost no tides due to its nearly complete enclosure from the Pacific Ocean. This isolation also affects faunal diversity and salinity, both of which are lower than in the open ocean. The sea has no large islands, bays or capes. Its water balance is mostly determined by the inflow and outflow through the straits connecting it to the neighboring seas and the Pacific Ocean. Few rivers discharge into the sea and their total contribution to the water exchange is within 1%.Yi Sun-sin was a Korean admiral and military general famed for his victories against the Japanese navy during the Imjin war in the Joseon Dynasty.
The Menai Strait is a narrow stretch of shallow tidal water about 25 km (16 mi) long, which separates the island of Anglesey from the mainland of Wales. It varies in width from 400 metres (1,300 ft) from Fort Belan to Abermenai Point to 1,100 metres (3,600 ft) from Traeth Gwyllt to Caernarfon Castle. It then narrows to 500 metres (1,600 ft) in the middle reaches and then it broadens again. At Bangor,Garth Pier,it is 900 metres (3,000 ft) wide. It then widens out,and the distance from Puffin Island to Penmaenmawr is about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi).
Jindo County (Jindo-gun) is a county in South Jeolla Province,South Korea. It consists of the island of Jindo and several smaller nearby islands. Jindo Bridge connects Jindo county with Haenam county.

The Naruto whirlpools are tidal whirlpools in the Naruto Strait,a channel between Naruto in Tokushima and Awaji Island in Hyōgo,Japan. The strait between Naruto and Awaji island has a width of about 1.3 km. The strait is one of the connections between the Pacific Ocean and the Inland Sea,a body of water separating Honshūand Shikoku, two of the main islands of Japan. The tide moves large amounts of water into and out of the Inland Sea twice a day. With a range of up to 1.7 m (5.6 ft),the tide creates a difference in the water level of up to 1.5 m between the Inland Sea and the Pacific. Due to the narrowness of the strait, the water rushes through the Naruto channel at a speed of about 13–15 km/h (8–9 mph) four times a day, twice flowing in and twice flowing out. During a spring tide, the speed of the water may reach 20 km/h (12 mph),creating vortices up to 20 m (66 ft) in diameter.
The HVDC Haenam–Cheju is a 101 kilometer long HVDC submarine cable connection between the Korean Peninsula and the island of Jeju in South Korea, which went into service in 1996. The connection is bipolar, consisting of two 180kV cables with a maximum transmission power of 300 megawatts.
