Najib Balala (born 20 September 1967) is a Kenyan politician who formerly served as the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism. He traces his ancestral origin to the Hadhrami people of Yemen. M.P. for Mvita Constituency. [1] He was the party leader of The Republican Congress Party of Kenya (RC),a partner of the Jubilee Coalition. [2]
Born to a family of Hadhrami,Balala attended Serani Boys primary school,and Kakamega High School,a national school. [3] He studied Business Administration and International Urban Management and Leadership at the University of Toronto,and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. [4]
Balala began his political career as the Mayor of Mombasa,Kenya. [7] He was then elected to a Mvita parliamentary seat in the 2002 general elections. Prior to that,Balala served as vice-chairman of Kenya Tourism Board (KTB),Chairman of All Local Government Association of Kenya,and Chairman of Mombasa and Coast Tourist Association. [8]
Balala was the longest serving Minister for Tourism,a position he held from the beginning of 2008 until 26 March 2012,when he was dismissed during a cabinet reshuffle.[ citation needed ] He formed The Republican Congress Party of Kenya (RC) in April 2012 that became a principal partner in the Jubilee Coalition with President Uhuru Kenyatta (TNA),William Samoei Ruto (URP),and Charity Ngilu (Narc).
As Cabinet Secretary for Mining he revoked licenses issued by the previous government. He has been accused of corruption by Cortec Mining for requesting a bribe of nearly $1 million for the reissuing of the license.
In December 2023,he,along with former principal secretary Leah Addah Gwiyo,and managing partner of West Consults John Odero,was accused of inflating the cost of the project to build a tourism college and arrested. He was the first former minister to be arrested on corruption charges since William Ruto was elected in 2022 on a platform of fighting corruption. [9] [10]
Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta is the fourth president of Kenya from 2013 to 2022. Kenyatta is the son of Jomo Kenyatta,Kenya's first president,and his fourth wife Mama Ngina Kenyatta. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is a centre-left political party in Kenya. It is the successor of a grassroots people's movement that was formed during the 2005 Kenyan constitutional referendum campaign. This movement separated in August 2007 into the Orange Democratic Movement Party of Kenya and the Wiper Democratic Movement –Kenya.
The Wiper Democratic Movement–Kenya (WDM-K),formerly Orange Democratic Movement–Kenya (ODM–Kenya),is a political party in Kenya,which originated as a result of the 2005 Kenyan constitutional referendum. Hassan Ali Joho is a Kenyan politician and the former Governor of Mombasa County affiliated with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). He was also elected to represent the Kisauni Constituency in the National Assembly of Kenya during the 2007 Kenyan parliamentary election. On 4 March 2013,during the general election,Joho was elected as the first governor of Mombasa County. In the 2017 General Elections held on 8 August,Joho retained his seat on an ODM ticket. Despite significant politically engineered setbacks,Joho emerged triumphant by winning with 220 576 votes against his closest rival Suleiman Shahbal with 69 322 votes,Suleiman was a member of the Jubilee Party. Joho served as governor of Mombasa until 2022 when he completed the constitutionally allowed two five-year terms. He was succeeded by Abdulswammad Sherrif Nassir the former member of the National Assembly for Mvita Constituency.

He was the Member of the House of Assembly for Masvingo South (ZANU-PF). It was announced on November 27,2017,that Simbarashe Mumbengegwi was now the acting Foreign Minister of Zimbabwe. In October 2020,it was revealed Mzembi was among those who fled to South Africa before their criminal trials could be completed.

Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua is a Kenyan politician who is serving as Deputy President of Kenya since 2022. He previously served as the Member of Parliament for Mathira Constituency between 2017 and 2022 as a member of the Jubilee Party. In the 2022 election,William Ruto selected Gachagua as his running mate,and the two were elected with just over 50% of the vote.
