Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) is a grassroots advocacy organization that combines the power of advocacy, education, policy, and research to unite around the goal of ending breast cancer.

Contents

It was founded in 1991 by a group of breast cancer survivors including President Fran Visco. Coalition members include breast cancer support, information and service groups, as well as the women's health and provider organizations.

Philosophy

Founded in 1991, the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) is a collaboration of activists, survivors, researchers, policy-makers, grassroots groups and national organizations that have come together as disruptive innovators for social change.

They link hundreds of organizations and tens of thousands of individuals from across the country into a diverse coalition to gain attention for breast cancer in Washington, D.C., and state capitals as well as laboratories, health care institutions and local communities.

NBCC is guided by three primary goals:

Funding

NBCC is supported through grants, contributions from individuals, corporate sponsorships and special events. The organization encourages advocates and businesses across the country to organize fundraising events.

The National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund meets all 20 Better Business Bureau Charity Standards , [1] has received an “A” rating from CharityWatch [2] and is ranked four stars by Charity Navigator [3] .

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer and donor-powered charity committed to supporting the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. The name of the foundation is not associated with a recognized Saint of the Catholic Church, but is founded on wordplay and appropriation of the title of sainthood. Volunteers sponsored by family, friends, and employers shave their heads or "chop" their ponytails in solidarity with children who typically lose their hair during cancer treatment in order to raise funds. Charity Navigator gave the foundation a 92% earning it a Four-Star. According to Better Business Bureau, the non-profit meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability, St. Baldrick's Foundation now has the GuideStar Gold Seal of approval.

Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization or Y-ME, was a Chicago-based national nonprofit organization that provided resources, information, and support to those suffering from breast cancer. Their mission was to "ensure, through information, empowerment and peer support, that no one faces breast cancer alone." Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization did not fund research but did advocate for research. The organization closed in 2012, but until May of 2020, their website continued to publish various articles relating to breast cancer.

LBBC works with women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and their caregivers throughout their experience of diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Their goal to be a "high-touch organization" that provides people with information and support of relevance to their personal experience of breast cancer. The organization supports studies of health care that are sensitive to issues of ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, and diagnosis.

The Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Alliance (WOCA) was founded in May 2001 to bring attention to ovarian cancer, as well as provide education, encourage advocacy and garner support for research and an eventual cure. WOCA is a tax-exempt organization pursuant to Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) is an American nonprofit organization based in New York City whose mission is to provide support, services and education to individuals, families and caregivers affected by Alzheimer's disease and related dementias nationwide, and fund research for better treatment and a cure. Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (OCRA) is a not-for-profit organization focused on ovarian cancer research, advocacy and patient support. The organization was formed in January 2016 when the former not-for-profit organization Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, which focused primarily on ovarian cancer research, combined with Ovarian Cancer National Alliance, which focused primarily on ovarian cancer advocacy and support programs, to form one organization.

United Breast Cancer Foundation (UBCF), founded in October 2000, is a national nonprofit organization headquartered in Huntington, New York.

The Hispanic Federation (HF) is a U.S based non-governmental organization focused on supporting Hispanic communities through local, state, and national advocacy. The Federation was founded in New York City in 1990 by a small group of Latino leaders, establishing initiatives to advocate for the interests of the Hispanic community and has expanded to establish programs, and policies in 16 states. The organization's objective is to empower and advance the Hispanic community primarily through service pillars, membership services, advocacy, and community programs. The Federation has formed relationships with a network of 100 Latino grassroots nonprofits, as well as collaborating with organizations, government officials, and private sector partners to enact systemic change related to a variety of socioeconomic issues for Hispanic communities. The Federation has gained national recognition for its work in areas of education, health, immigration, economic empowerment, civic engagement, environment, and organizational development to strengthening Latino institutions to ultimately increase the quality of life within Hispanic communities.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is a U.S. breast cancer organization that promotes breast cancer awareness and education, provides free screening services, and supports breast cancer patients and survivors.

The National Indigenous Women's Resource Center (NIWRC) is a nonprofit organization that provides health resources to Native American women and also advocates for women's health, housing, and domestic violence support. The organization was founded and is led by Native American women.
