National Garden Clubs, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri. [1] [2] [3] It consists of dozens of local branches, in nearly every state in the US and has about 190,000 members as of 2021. [4] [5] Its stated mission is "to promote the love of gardening, floral design, and civic and environmental responsibility." [2] The first local branch met in Athens, Georgia, in 1891, and the National Garden Clubs organization was formed in 1929, by which point there were branches in 19 states. [2] The NGC organizes community gardening projects, provides educational programs, and produces a quarterly publication, the National Gardener. [6] [7] It also offers college scholarships and grants for youth clubs planting pollinator gardens. [8] They have published The Handbook for Flower Shows and Designing By Type. [9] Brenda Moore, of West Virginia, was installed as the president of the organization in 2023.

Partnerships

National Garden Clubs works with the USDA Forest Service through the Penny Pine program to plant trees in areas where they have been destroyed. [10]

The garden is open every day of the year. An admission fee has been approved to start in 2022, not to exceed $35.

The Gardeners of America/Men's Garden Clubs of America (TGOA/MGCA) is a national organization with 31 affiliated garden clubs located in 14 states (2018) across the United States. The organization is also known as Gardeners of America (TGOA) or Men’s Garden Clubs of America (MGCA). It has its headquarters in Johnston, Iowa, a business suburb of Des Moines. It is a non-profit organization incorporated in the state of Illinois, and registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) non-profit group. Most clubs include men and women members, and concentrate on gardening education, and community beautification and enhancement. At one time the organization had about 10,000 members.

Tampa Bay Reforestation and Environmental Effort, Inc. more commonly known as "T.R.E.E. Inc.", was a grassroots nonprofit environmental organization based out of the Tampa Bay Area. It promoted the practice of volunteers raising and then planting trees along the interstates, roadways, and parks of the greater Tampa Bay Area to beautify and preserve the environment. Over its 40-year existence, T.R.E.E. Inc. planted over 31,181 trees and palms.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Community gardening in the United States</span>

Community gardens in the United States benefit both gardeners and society at large. Community gardens provide fresh produce to gardeners and their friends and neighbors. They provide a place of connection to nature and to other people. In a wider sense, community gardens provide green space, a habitat for insects and animals, sites for gardening education, and beautification of the local area. Community gardens provide access to land to those who otherwise could not have a garden, such as apartment-dwellers, the elderly, and the homeless. Many gardens resemble European allotment gardens, with plots or boxes where individuals and families can grow vegetables and flowers, including a number which began as victory gardens during World War II. Other gardens are worked as community farms with no individual plots at all, similar to urban farms.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">AFS Intercultural Programs</span> International youth exchange organization

AFS Intercultural Programs is an international youth exchange organization. It consists of over 50 independent, not-for-profit organizations, each with its own network of volunteers, professionally staffed offices, volunteer board of directors and website. In 2015, 12,578 students traveled abroad on an AFS cultural exchange program, between 99 countries. The U.S.-based partner, AFS-USA, sends more than 1,100 U.S. students abroad and places international students with more than 2,300 U.S. families each year. As of 2022, more than 500,000 people have gone abroad with AFS and over 100,000 former AFS students live in the U.S.

Gateway Greening is non-profit organization based in St. Louis, Missouri that works to educate and empower the community through gardening and urban agriculture. The organization operates demonstration and community resource gardens and an urban farm, hosts lectures and education programs, and supports school and community gardens throughout the City and St Louis County, Missouri.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Elizabeth Street Garden</span> Community garden in Manhattan, New York

Elizabeth Street Garden is a one-acre (0.40 ha) community sculpture garden in the Nolita neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, located on Elizabeth Street between Prince and Spring Streets. The garden is managed by the eponymous Elizabeth Street Garden (ESG), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and open to the public for general use and community events.

Keep Growing Detroit is an organization dedicated to food sovereignty and community engagement in the cities of Detroit, Hamtramck, and Highland Park. Founded in 2013, the program designs and implements initiatives that promote the practice of urban agriculture as a mode of food justice for underrepresented communities, particularly those who do not have access to healthy food options. The goals of Keep Growing Detroit are to educate and empower community members using urban agricultural practices. Programs such as the Garden Resource Program and Grown in Detroit served as catalysts, laying the foundation for Keep Growing Detroit.
