National Hockey Stadium is a purpose-built field hockey stadium in Lahore, Pakistan. Located inside the Nishtar Park Sports Complex, it is the biggest terrace field hockey stadium in the world, [2] [3] having a capacity of 45,000 spectators. [1] [4]

Contents

The offices of Sports Board Punjab and Pakistan Hockey Federation are also located in the stadium compound. [3]

Tournaments hosted

It hosted all matches of the 1990 Men's Hockey World Cup, where the hosts were defeated 3–1 by the Netherlands in the final. [5] It has hosted many international matches and competitions, including the inaugural edition of the Champions Trophy tournament in 1978, and further editions in 1988, 1994, 1998 and 2004.

In January 2018, it hosted a two-match series between World XI and Pakistan. [6] The stadium was the venue for Haier Hockey Series Open in December 2018. [7]

Political events hosted

Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, and a former prime minister of Pakistan Imran Khan, announced his party's Haqeeqi Azadi jalsa or public meeting would be held at National Hockey Stadium on August 13, 2022. [8] [9]

Gaddafi Stadium was the first cricket stadium in Pakistan to be equipped with modern floodlights with their own standby power generators. The history of cricket in Pakistan predates the creation of the country in 1947. The first international cricket match in what is now Pakistan today was held in Karachi on 22 November 1935 between Sindh and Australia. The match was seen by 5,000 Karachiites. 2012 World Series Hockey better known as Bridgestone World Series Hockey, abbreviated as Bridgestone WSH, was the first season of the hockey tournament World Series Hockey, a professional league for field hockey in India. The tournament was to take place from 17 December 2011 to 22 January 2012 but later was postponed to 29 February 2012 owing to Olympic qualifiers. Eight teams took part in this competition. The opening ceremony and the first match was held at Sector 42 Stadium, Chandigarh, where Bhopal Badshahs beat Chandigarh Comets 4–3.

Quetta hosted the Games for the first time since 2004, when the city hosted the 29th edition. The Balochistan Sports Department hosted the event in collaboration with the Pakistan Olympic Association.
