National Maritime Institute or NMI is an autonomous state owned research and educational institute working as a statutory organization trains marines and carries out research in Bangladesh and is located in Chittagong, Bangladesh. [1] [2]

History

The institute was founded in 1952 near Hazi Camp, Pahartali, Chittagong. After the Independence of Bangladesh 1971, the institute was relocated to Seamen's Hostel. In 1973 the Institute returned to its original location near the Hazi camp. The permanent campus of the institute was completed in 1994 with support of the Government of Bangladesh and the Government of Japan. The institute in under the Ministry of Shipping. [3] It is the only state owned institution in Bangladesh providing maritime education in Bangladesh. [4]

University of Chittagong is a public research university with multidisciplinary faculties situated across a 2110-acre hilly landmass in Fatehpur Union of Hathazari Upazila, 22 kilometres north of Chittagong city of Bangladesh. This university has the largest campus among Bangladeshi universities. The academic activities of the university formally began on 18 November 1966. It has about 24,000 students and more than 1000 faculty members.

Chittagong College is a government college in Chittagong, Bangladesh. It is the second college established in Bangladesh after Dhaka College. It offers Higher Secondary Education (HSC), bachelor's degree and master's degree.

Western Marine Shipyard

Western Marine Shipyard Limited is a public listed shipbuilding company based in Chittagong, Bangladesh. The shipyard has constructed various types of vessels till date, including ocean going multi purpose cargo vessels, passenger vessels & boats, oil tankers, ro-ro ferry, pontoons, barges, fishing trawlers, dredgers, tug boats, container vessels, etc. Western Marine Shipyard is the country's largest shipbuilder, standing with over 42 acres of land, modernized into a shipyard consisting of all sorts of tech & heavy machinery. Sitting in the Eastern Bank of the Karnaphuli river in Chittagong, it is an employment source for 3500 people; including skilled and semi skilled labors. More than five hundred marine professionals are also working in the shipyard. Including marine experts, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, naval architects & experts in other fields. As a result of that, today, they are constructing vessels for buyers around the world [see Projects] and owns 89 percent of Bangladesh's shipbuilding market.

Bangladesh Naval Academy

The Bangladesh Naval Academy is situated at the mouth of the Karnaphuli River at Patenga, Chattogram, Bangladesh. Bathed by the river Karnaphuli on the east and sheltered on the south by the Bay of Bengal, BNA stands in a panoramic natural picturesque in an isolated landscape of the country. It is surrounded by heart-snatching lush green vegetation in Patenga sea-beach, 14 km south of the city centre of the hustling port city of Chittagong. Bangladesh Naval Academy is well connected by rail, road and air from Dhaka.

Abdul Awal Mintoo is a Bangladeshi businessman and politician. He has been chairman or managing director of a number of organisations and groups within Bangladeshi industry. He is the former president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI). During the last Caretaker Government, he was jailed on allegations of corruption.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University (BSMRMU)(Bengali:বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিবুর রহমান মেরিটাইম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) was established in 2013, the 37th public university of the country. It is the first maritime University in Bangladesh, the 3rd maritime university in South Asia and the 12th maritime university in the world. It has issued its first calls for admission in December, 2016.

The Government agencies in Bangladesh are state controlled organizations that act independently to carry out the policies of the Government of Bangladesh. The Government Ministries are relatively small and merely policy-making organizations, allowed to control agencies by policy decisions. Some of the work of the government is carried out through state enterprises or limited companies.

Cyclone Mora North Indian cyclone in 2017

Cyclone Mora was a tropical cyclone that caused widespread devastation and severe flooding in Sri Lanka, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Northeast India in May 2017. The second named storm of the 2017 annual cyclone season, Mora developed from an area of low pressure over the southeastern Bay of Bengal on May 28. Mora reached peak strength with maximum sustained winds of 110 km/h (70 mph). The cyclone made landfall near Chittagong on the morning of May 30 and steadily weakened, dissipating early in the morning on May 31. Across its path, Mora dropped a large amount of rain, including 225mm of rainfall in Chittagong and northeast India. The storm is estimated to have caused damages nearing US$300 million.

Shyamoli Ideal Polytechnic Institute (SIPI) is a private polytechnic institute in Bangladesh for providing 4 years Diploma in Engineering under BTEB. The institute has been established in 1979. It has four campuses located at Dhaka, Chittagong, Rangpur, Lakshmipur.
