Traditions
"Senior Appreciation Day," formerly known as "Slave Day," is an annual event where Senior students buy Freshmen students for one day (although to be a Senior "slave master," you must have been a Freshman "slave"). The Freshmen push, pull or carry their owner (using various modes) from class to class, much to the delight and astonishment of other classmen. The day's event is highlighted by a huge picnic on the football field and races or other activities around the track. While NHS has had this tradition around for quite some time, the origin of it is unknown.
"The Underpass" Incoming seniors from NHS buy specific spots auctioned near the end of the school year and paint them, adding personal touches, to include whimsical or meaningful images or phrases. The underpass is on K Street (owned by then-Santa Fe Railway Company, who has now donated it for such purpose). The painting occurs in mid-August; the members of the incoming Senior class decorate their space with artwork of their choice. The "artwork" is then displayed until the following August, when the walls are whitewashed, and the decorations begin anew.
The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) is the governing body for high school sports in the U.S. state of California. CIF membership includes both public and private high schools. Unlike most other state organizations, it does not have a single, statewide championships for all sports; instead, for some sports, the CIF's 10 Sections each have their own championships.
The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) is the body that writes the rules of competition for most high school sports and activities in the United States. NFHS's headquarters are located in White River State Park in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Eldorado High School is a public high school in Clark County, Nevada, United States. The school is a part of the Clark County School District, located in Sunrise Manor, an unincorporated area on the northeast part of the Las Vegas Valley, south of Nellis Air Force Base. Its team mascot is the Sundevils and its school colors are maroon and gold.
Campbell Hall School is an independent, coeducational, K–12 Episcopal day school located in the Studio City neighborhood of the city of Los Angeles, California, United States. Founded in 1944 by the Reverend Alexander Campbell, the school has an enrollment of approximately 1,000 students from kindergarten through high school. It has programs in athletics, music, drama, dance and all other major academic areas. The school features a developed Performing Arts Program. Students in kindergarten through grade twelve participate in dance, voice, instrumental and drama programs. Orchestra and a World Music Program are available for grades 7–12.
Noble High School is a public high school in North Berwick, Maine serving students in grades 8-12 from the towns of Berwick, North Berwick, and Lebanon. NOBLE is an acronym for the three towns that NHS serves. Noble High School is a member of the Coalition of Essential Schools.
Coronado High School is a public high school in Henderson, Nevada, part of Clark County School District.
The Meadows School is a non-profit, coeducational, nonsectarian, independent college preparatory day school located in the affluent Summerlin area of Las Vegas, Nevada. The campus serves just under 900 students in grades pre-k through 12 spread among four divisions – Beginning School (Pre-K), Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School.
Ralston Valley High School is a public high school in Arvada, Colorado, United States. Since it opened for the 2000 school year, its enrollment has grown to around 1800+ students. Area rivalries include Standley Lake High School, Pomona High School and Arvada West High School.
South Tahoe High School (STHS) is a public high school in South Lake Tahoe, California, United States. It was established in 1952 and is the only high school that belongs to the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD). The school mascot is the Viking and its colors are blue and gold.
Faith Lutheran Middle School & High School is a private Christian school located in Las Vegas, Nevada. The school, which was founded in 1979, serves grades 6-12, and is affiliated with the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod.
Liberty High School is a high school in Henderson in the U.S. state of Nevada. It is part of the Clark County School District. Before the school opened, prospective students chose the name "Liberty" and the school mascot "The Patriot" through a survey mailed to their homes. This was largely chosen due to the recent terrorist attacks. Liberty's team name is the Patriots. Liberty considers itself to be a "classical school." This is because through Liberty's curriculum, one can study Latin, as well as focus on the history and society of ancient Rome and Greece.
The Northern Nevada 3A Region is a part of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, governing the northern half of Nevada for high school athletics. The Northern 3A league is the 2nd largest school level, which has schools with enrollments of 461 to 1200. As of the 2018–2019 school year, there are 10 member schools in the Northern 3A league. Elko High School, South Tahoe High School, and Churchill County High School moved down from the Northern 4A beginning the 2010–2011 school year and at the start of the 2018–2019 school year, North Valleys High School moved down from the Northern 4A to the Northern 3A.
The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) is the governing body of athletic programs for high schools in the state of Nevada. In addition, five schools in the state of California are also members as the schools are geographically isolated from other California schools.
The Sunset 4A Region is a part of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association and is one of two conferences in Southern Nevada 4A high school athletics. The Sunset Region consists of large schools in the western parts of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas and Pahrump, Nevada. There are two division in the Sunset 4A Region, Northwest and Southwest. The Sunset 4A Region was a part of the Southern Nevada 4-A Region, until the conference was divided into two separate regions due to the constant expansion and development of new high schools in the Las Vegas metro.
The Sunrise 4A Region is a part of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association and is one of two conferences in Southern Nevada 4A high school athletics. The Sunrise Region consists of large schools in Henderson, Nevada and on the eastern parts of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas, Nevada. There are two division in the Sunrise 4A Region, Northeast and Southeast. The Sunrise 4A Region was a part of the Southern Nevada 4-A Region, until the conference was divided into two separate regions before the 2000-01 school year due to the constant expansion and development of new high schools in the Las Vegas Valley. Sunrise Mountain High School joined the Northeast Division most recently, during the 2009-10 school year.
Excel Christian School is a fully accredited private Christian school in Sparks, Nevada. Founded in 2003, it offers grades Pre-K through 12 and is a non-profit corporation 501(c)(3). The school mascot is the Warriors, and the school's colors are red and black.
Truckee High School is one of two high schools in the Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District, which is based in the Lake Tahoe area town of Truckee in eastern Nevada County, California.
Sierra Canyon School (SCS) is a private, coeducational day school located in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Chatsworth. Sierra Canyon enrolls students in preschool through grade 12.
Findlay Prep is a former high school basketball program located in Henderson, Nevada. The program was created in 2006 by local businessman Cliff Findlay, who owns several car dealerships in the Las Vegas area. Despite closing its high school in 2010 due to the local economic downturn, the Findlay Prep players took high school classes at Henderson International. Findlay was part of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA), but they were ineligible to compete in state championships due to the fact that they were allowed to recruit from outside the state. Instead, they competed for National High School Invitational (NHSI) championships, an 8 team tournament featuring the top high school teams in the country that's played in New York. They won a total of 3 national championships during their time, coming in 2009, 2010, and 2012, all under Mike Peck. Through the years, Findlay has produced 17 NBA players and over 70 Division I athletes. The program produced several international players as well from countries like Lithuania, Senegal, Canada, France, Georgia, and others. They had an all-time record of 381-43 (.899), with only 2 losses ever on their home court. Though in 2019, after the completion of their season, the program ultimately shut down for unknown reasons. The news came unexpectedly, and rumor has it that their relationship with the Henderson International School had strained over time. Nonetheless, they were the pioneers of the prep basketball concept which is now used by numerous schools across the country today.
The Southern Nevada 2A Region is a part of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, governing the mostly-southern part of Nevada for high school athletics. There are currently 10 member schools in the Southern 2A league for the 2011–2012 school year, one of which is located in California.
