Neil Hallett (born 1980) is a retired English rugby union player who played at either full-back, centre or fly-half Neil is a coach at Wimbledon. [1] An excellent kicker, Hallett is best known for his time at Esher where he scored over 1,300 points for the club in all competitions, and he is also one of the most prolific scorers in tier 3 history (2nd all-time as of 2016-17) with over 1,400 league points scored from his time spent with at four different clubs including Esher and Ealing Trailfinders. [2] As well as playing club rugby Hallett has also captained Surrey (winning three County Championship Shield titles) and been capped by the Barbarians and England Counties XV. [3]

Career

Club career

After starting his career at Rosslyn Park, Hallett moved to fellow National 2 side, Bracknell, mid-way through the 2002-03 season in order to gain first team rugby. It was at Bracknell that he came to prominence, enjoying an outstanding 2003-04 season which saw him come 3rd top scorer in the division with 239 points helping his side to a very respectable 7th-place finish. [4] Despite starting the 2004-05 season with Bracknell, after just 4 games Hallett decided to join divisional rivals, Esher. It proved to be the correct decision as by the end of the season Bracknell were relegated while Esher (just) managed to stay up, with Hallett's kicking contributing greatly to his new club's survival. The period between 2005-07 was Halletts best at Esher, finishing as the divisions top scorer twice (with 302 and 398 points respectively) and culminating in the Surrey club winning the league title and promotion at the end of the 2006-07 campaign. [5] [6] [7] He helped the club survive several years in tier 2 but a change to the divisional structure at the end of the 2008-09 season involving the creation of the RFU Championship meant that Esher were relegated back to tier 3 despite finishing in 12th spot. [8] [9]

In the summer of 2010, despite having a bit-part role in Esher's promotion from National League 1 to the Championship, Hallett decided to leave the club to join Ealing Trailfinders, playing two divisions below in National League 2 South. [10] Back enjoying first team rugby, Hallett was part of an excellent Trailfinders side that stormed to the title, contributing 337 points in a side that included the prolific Phil Chesters who scored a record-breaking 70 tries that year. [11] [12] He spent a further season at the club as they just missed out on a successive promotion to Jersey before deciding to join London regional side Wimbledon as a player-coach for the 2012-13 season, combining playing with teaching at Wimbledon College. [13] He would play the final years of his career at Wimbledon, helping them to the London 1 South title in 2015 before retiring at the end of the 2016-17 season, having helped his promoted side to a mid-table finish in National League 3 London & SE. Representative career

Following an excellent debut season with Esher, Hallett was selected for the Surrey squad taking part in the 2005 County Plate (now Shield) competition. He took his good form into the competition that summer, helping his county to qualify from the group stage which included a man-of-the-match performance in the 38-22 win against Dorset & Wilts, scoring 28 points. [17] After winning their semi-final fixture, Surrey faced Somerset in the Twickenham final. Having already beaten the south-west side in the group stages, Surrey once again proved too strong, Hallett contributing 9 points from the boot as he helped his side to their first taste of County Championship silverware since 1971. [18]

His performances at club and county drew the interest of the Barbarians who included Hallett in their 2006 tour. He made his Barbarians debut in the last game of the tour, contributing a try and conversion and being named man-of-the-match as his side won 28-19 against the Georgian national team in Tbilisi in June. [19] Further call-ups to the Barbarians would follow the next season, with appearances against the Combined Services, East Midlands and British Army to follow, although he would fail to score any further points for the Ba-Baas. [20] In February 2007 he also made his England Counties XV debut, scoring 10 points in a 17-20 loss against an Irish Club XV at Donnybrook. [21] A second Counties appearance followed in March, with Hallet contributing 21 points, including 2 tries, as England Counties beat France Amateurs 41-10 at the Rectory Field. [22]

Towards the end of his career playing at Wimbledon, Hallett was still very much involved with the Surrey County side. He was called up to take part in his counties 2013 County Championship Shield campaign (formerly known as the plate) and was made captain. Despite being in the twilight of his career, Hallet showed that class was permanent, contributing 61 points including 3 tries as Surrey stormed their way through to the final. [23] [24] [25] [26] At Twickenham Surrey managed to overcome a resolute Cumbria 21-16, with Hallett's 11 points, including 3 penalties, proving to be vital as his county won their second Shield title. [27] The following season, Hallett would return to county action for the last team, captaining newly promoted in the 2014 County Championship Plate competition. Once again Hallet was outstanding as Surrey went on to win the Plate competition, contributing 73 points overall. [28] He saved his strongest performance for the final with a massive 24 points including 6 penalties helping Surrey overcome Leicestershire 39-16. [29]

Esher Rugby Football Club is an English rugby union club based in Surrey, England. Esher currently play in the fourth division of the English league system; National League 2 East following their relegation from National League 1 at the end of the 2022–23 season.

The Surrey Cup is an annual rugby union knock-out club competition organized by the Surrey Rugby Football Union. The original cup competition was first played for back in 1890, the inaugural winners being Lennox, but was discontinued in 1909, having been held intermittently over 20 seasons, due to cup competitions being considerable 'undesirable'. The cup was reintroduced around 50 years later for the 1970–71 season, with the first winners of the modern competition being Guildford & Godalming. It was one of two leagues at this level, with its counterpart, National League 2 North, covering the north of England. The format of the league was changed at the beginning of the 2009–10 season following reorganisation by the Rugby Football Union. The champions were promoted to National League 1. The runner-up play in a promotion play-off with the runner-up of National League 2 North; the team with the best record having home advantage. The bottom three teams were relegated, to either South West Premier or London & South East Premier. Esher are the current and final champions.

Tristan Roberts is a rugby union player who currently plays for Esher in National League 1, having previously been at US Cognac and Ealing Trailfinders. He has represented both the England Students and the England Counties XV and during his rugby career has progressed from playing in the fourth tier with Cinderford to playing in the Premiership with London Welsh. Tristan has played much of his career at fly-half and has a reputation as a very reliable points kicker who is also excellent at drop kicks.

Birmingham & Solihull find themselves playing in this league following their relegation from the 2010-11 RFU Championship in the play-offs, whilst other newcomers to the league in this season are Ealing Trailfinders and Jersey, and Fylde, who won promotion to the league from the 2010–11 National League 2 South and 2010–11 National League 2 North respectively.

The 2012–13 National League 1 was the fourth season of the third tier of the English domestic rugby union competitions since the professionalised format of the second division was introduced. New teams to the division included Esher who were relegated from the 2011–12 RFU Championship, Loughborough Students who were promoted as champions from the 2011–12 National League 2 North along with Old Albanian (champions) and Richmond (playoffs) who came up from the 2011–12 National League 2 South.

The 2009–10 National League 2 South was the first season of the fourth tier (south) of the English domestic rugby union competitions since the professionalised format of the second division was introduced. Previously known as National Division 3 South, it had been renamed due to widespread changes to the league system by the RFU with National One becoming the Championship, National 2 becoming National 1 and so on. The league system was 4 points for a win, 2 points for a draw and additional bonus points being awarded for scoring 4 or more tries and/or losing within 7 points of the victorious team. In terms of promotion the league champions would go straight up into National League 1 while the runners up would have a one-game playoff against the runners up from National League 2 North for the final promotion place. A further change to the league system would see the division increase from 14 to 15 teams.

Phil Chesters is an English rugby union player who is currently playing for Chinnor in National League 1 having signed for the club for the 2017-18 season. Prior to that he had made his name at Ealing Trailfinders where he had also been part of the medical staff. His best position is winger and over his career he has proved to be a tremendous try scorer who has set multiple records in lower division English rugby with Ealing, notably all-time records of 42 tries in a season in tier 3 and an amazing 70 tries in a season in tier 4 – a record that is unlikely to ever be beaten. As of the end of the 2017-18 he has also become the National League 2 South all-time try scorer with 117 tries.

Andrew Frost is a retired English rugby union player who played mostly at fullback A former Saracens Academy player and England youth international, Andy made his name with Southend. An excellent spot kicker who could also score tries, he scored over 1,700 points for the Essex club, also becoming one of the most prolific scorers of all-time in National League 2 South. He retired in 2015 due to injury.

Ben Ward is an English rugby union player-coach who plays at fly-half. He has spent the bulk of his career at Ealing Trailfinders, being part of a team that has achieved five promotions in little over a decade as they have come up through the English league system – from tier 6 all the way up to tier 2. A dependable points kicker, he is one of the most prolific scorers in the history of National League 2 South with over 700 points in that division. Ben is currently Ealing's Director of Rugby as well as a member of the playing squad.

Owen Bruynseels is a retired English rugby union player who played as a winger. He spent his entire career with Ealing Trailfinders, with over 200 appearances, that saw his club rise from the 6th division of English Rugby all the way up to the RFU Championship. An opportunistic try scorer he was one of the most prolific in National League 2 South history with 81 tries in four seasons. Since retiring from playing due to injury in 2015, he was inducted into the Ealing Trailfinders 'Hall of Fame' and remains at the club as team manager.

Jack Lavin is an English rugby union player who is currently at Esher in National League 1 having signed from Caldy for the 2017–18 season. He plays at Fly-half or Inside Centre and is an excellent points kicker who can also score tries. As well as playing club rugby he has represented Cheshire in the county championships, finishing as runners up in 2016, as well as being capped by England Counties XV.

The 2017–18 RFU Championship, known for sponsorship reasons as the Greene King IPA Championship, was the ninth season of the professionalised format of the RFU Championship, the second tier of the English rugby union league system run by the Rugby Football Union. David Allen is a retired English rugby union player who spent the majority of his career at Blackheath, where his position was openside flanker. While at 'Club' Allen become the all-time try scorer in National League 1 history with 147 tries from 274 appearances. As well as playing for Blackheath he was also capped by England Counties XV and the Barbarians.

The 2018–19 National League 1, known for sponsorship reasons as the SSE National League 1, is the tenth season of the third tier of the English rugby union system, since the professionalised format of the second tier RFU Championship was introduced; and is the 32nd season since league rugby began in 1987.
