New South Wales Z16 class locomotive

The Z16 class was a class of steam locomotives built for the New South Wales Government Railways in Australia. They earned the name "High Fliers" due to their large driving wheels and high speed when working express services. The Z16 class were an amalgamation under the New South Wales Government Railways 1924 locomotive renumbering of two previous classes, the D.261 and D.334 classes. The D.261 class were renumbered as 1601-24 and the D.334 class as 1625-41. Differences between the two varieties within the Z16 class included that the former D.261 class had Stephenson valve gear while the D.334 class had Joy's valve gear, and that in the former D.261 engines the front bogie wheels were a closely spaced Bissell truck while the former D.334 class had its front bogie wheels in a more widely spaced Adams bogie. The class was withdrawn from 1926 to 1933, except the former D.334 and D.342 which were sold to the Nepean Sand and Gravel Company for use at Yarramundi NSW. One of these two locomotives was observed and photographed in steam in the late 1940s or early 1950s by members of the Australian Railway Historical Society.
