NewsFront (sometimes written News Front) is a website based in Russian occupied Crimea. It describes itself as "a news agency that runs news in ten languages including Russian, German, English, Bulgarian, Georgian, French, and Spanish." [1] In 2021, the United States Department of the Treasury described it as "a Crimea-based disinformation and propaganda outlet...particularly focused on supporting Russia-backed forces in Ukraine." [2] According to owner Konstantin Knyrik, however, NewsFront is fighting an "information war" against unfair attacks on Russia. [3]

Leadership and origin

NewsFront is published by Mediagroup Newsfront LLC, headquartered in Bakhchysarai in central Crimea, registered to the home address of local council member Konstantin Knyrik. [4] In addition to running NewsFront, Knyrik is head of the Crimean branch of the pro-Putin political party Rodina. [5] The co-owner with Knyrik is Mikhail Sinelin, a Russian businessman who was formerly a Kremlin official. [4] [1] Both had an equal 50% share. As of 2022 as the owners of Mediagroup Newsfront LLC are listed Knyrik (50%) and Yulia Lozanova (50%), [6] [7] Lozanova is supposedly the wife of Sinelin. [7] [8]

NewsFront was established in March 2014 when, during the Russian invasion of Crimea, Knyrik with a group of masked gunmen broke into the headquarters of the Crimean Center for Investigative Journalism and took over its resources. [9] [10]

In April 2015, the Media Group News Front company registered NewsFront.info as a private news agency. [11]

In 2018, Knyrik told an interviewer that his goal was "an alternative source of information for people in Europe and the U.S." to counteract "this bullshit published by the mainstream media in the West." [3] With NewsFront, he claimed that he was fighting an "information war" that had been started by Western nations unfairly attacking Russia. [3]

Knyrik has been sanctioned by Ukraine in 2020, followed by the European Union, United States, Australia and Switzerland in 2022. [12] Sinelin has been sanctioned by the United States, Ukraine and Australia in 2022. [13] Mediagroup Newsfront LLC has been sanctioned by the United States in 2021, followed by Ukraine, Australia and Japan in 2022. [14] [2] [15]

Allegations of disinformation

In 2017, German newspaper Die Zeit alleged that NewsFront had tried to influence elections in both Germany and France by promoting false claims against Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron. [16] According to the Atlantic Council, NewsFront was in 2017 one of the top three sources of Russian propaganda in Germany. Together with official Russian outlets RT and Sputnik, their content had 500,000 followers on Facebook. [17]

In 2019, EU vs Disinformation stated that NewsFront focuses its German-language version on anti-immigration German nationalism in order to attract a discontented German-speaking audience to the pro-Kremlin viewpoints of news from RT and Sputnik. The English language version pursues the same goal, but with "left-leaning" commentary, nothing about immigration. [18] According to EU vs Disinformation, NewsFront published more than 800 disinformations since 2015 (as of July 2022). [19] [20]

In 2020, the US State Department described NewsFront as part of a "disinformation and propaganda ecosystem," where Russian state actors teamed with others whose connection to Russia was less clear, in order to get wide attention for their ideas. [21]

In 2021, a State Department official speaking on the basis of classified information told The Wall Street Journal that NewsFront "is guided by the FSB," Russia's successor agency to the Soviet Union's KGB. [22] Time magazine in 2021 described NewsFront as "by far the most successful and ambitious" Russia-led website making false claims about COVID-19 and vaccines. [10] For example, NewsFront published claims that the U.S. government created coronavirus [21] and intentionally exported it to China. [23] [24]

In 2021 and again in 2022, the US Treasury announced sanctions against NewsFront, calling it in 2022 "a Crimea-based disinformation and propaganda outlet...particularly focused on supporting Russia-backed forces in Ukraine." [2] [15]

In February 2024 they spread news of an upcoming biopic of President Zelensky of Ukraine called “The Price of Victory”. They included videos of the actors Chuck Norris and Dolph Lundgren manipulated to appear to be wishing him success with the film. [25]

Social media

In April 2020, according to NBC News , Facebook and Twitter deleted many pages and accounts they said were linked to "Coordinated Inauthentic Behavior" by Russian actors, including those linked to News Front and to SouthFront . [26]

In May 2020, NewsFront was blocked on YouTube due to a violation of YouTube's Terms of Use. [27]

In February 2022, Facebook again took action against NewsFront and SouthFront, for further activity violating their policies. [26] According to the German Marshall Fund, the new violations involved fake profiles that helped evade the bans by posting links to mirror sites, where innocuous URLs showed content identical to that in NewsFront. [28] In addition to mirror sites, they also used cloaking sites, that is, URLs that re-directed a browser to URLs at NewsFront. [29]

Russian web brigades, also called Russian trolls, Russian bots, Kremlinbots, or Kremlin trolls are state-sponsored anonymous Internet political commentators and trolls linked to the Government of Russia. Participants report that they are organized into teams and groups of commentators that participate in Russian and international political blogs and Internet forums using sockpuppets, social bots, and large-scale orchestrated trolling and disinformation campaigns to promote pro-Vladimir Putin and pro-Russian propaganda.

Ruptly GmbH is a Russian state-owned video news agency specializing in video-on-demand, based in Berlin, Germany. It is a subsidiary of the Russian state-controlled television network RT. Ruptly owns the media channel Redfish and is the major shareholder of the digital content company Maffick. Its chief executive is Dinara Toktosunova. Upon Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the company faced a staff exodus. In January 2023, Toktosunova was sanctioned by Ukraine.

Media portrayals of the Russo-Ukrainian War, including skirmishes in eastern Donbas and the 2014 Ukrainian revolution after the Euromaidan protests, the subsequent 2014 annexation of Crimea, incursions into Donbas, and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, have differed widely between Ukrainian, Western and Russian media. Russian, Ukrainian, and Western media have all, to various degrees, been accused of propagandizing, and of waging an information war.

Sputnik is a Russian state-owned news agency and radio broadcast service. It was established by the Russian government-owned news agency Rossiya Segodnya on 10 November 2014. With headquarters in Moscow, Sputnik maintains regional editorial offices in Washington, D.C., Cairo, Beijing, Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Montevideo and Rio de Janeiro. Sputnik describes itself as being focused on global politics and economics and aims for an international audience.

New Eastern Outlook (NEO) is an internet journal published by the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. According to its website, this journal looks at world events "as they relate to the Orient." According to a 2020 report from the US State Department, NEO is "a pseudo-academic publication ... that promotes disinformation and propaganda focused primarily on the Middle East, Asia, and Africa." According to the United States Department of the Treasury, NEO is run by SVR, Russia's foreign intelligence agency. NEO is included in the EUvsDisinfo project, which tracks online disinformation.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Propaganda in Russia</span>

The propaganda of the Russian Federation promotes views, perceptions or agendas of the government. The media include state-run outlets and online technologies, and may involve using "Soviet-style 'active measures' as an element of modern Russian 'political warfare'". Notably, contemporary Russian propaganda promotes the cult of personality of Vladimir Putin and positive views of Soviet history. Russia has established a number of organizations, such as the Presidential Commission of the Russian Federation to Counter Attempts to Falsify History to the Detriment of Russia's Interests, the Russian web brigades, and others that engage in political propaganda to promote the views of the Russian government.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">112 Ukraine</span> Ukrainian TV channel

112 Ukraine was a private Ukrainian TV channel which provided 24-hour news coverage. 112 Ukraine was available on satellites AMOS 2/3, via the DVB-T2 network, and was also available in packages of all major Ukrainian cable operators until it was banned from broadcasting in Ukraine in February 2021. The channel was focused on live broadcasting.

The East StratCom Task Force (ESCTF) is a part of the European External Action Service, focused on "effective communication" and promotion of European Union activities in Eastern Europe and beyond. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Russian information war against Ukraine</span>

The Russian information war against Ukraine was articulated by the Russian government as part of the Gerasimov doctrine. They believed that Western governments were instigating color revolutions in former Soviet states which posed a threat to Russia.

The Strategic Culture Foundation (SCF) is a Russian think tank based in Moscow that primarily publishes an online current affairs magazine of the same name. SCF is regarded as an arm of Russian state interests by the United States government. SCF has been characterized as a conservative, pro-Russian propaganda website by U.S. media and others.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Disinformation in the Russian invasion of Ukraine</span>

As part of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Russian state and state-controlled media have spread disinformation in their information war against Ukraine. Ukrainian media and politicians have also been accused of using propaganda and deception, although such efforts have been described as more limited than the Russian disinformation campaign.

Russian disinformation campaigns have occurred in many countries. For example, disinformation campaigns led by Yevgeny Prigozhin have been reported in several African countries. Russia, however, denies that it uses disinformation to influence public opinion.

<i>SouthFront</i> Russian military disinformation website

SouthFront is a multilingual website registered in Russia and based in Crimea. It has been accused by multiple sources of being an outlet for disinformation and propaganda under the control of the Russian government. For this reason, it has been sanctioned by the US Treasury and banned by social media platforms.

Oriental Review (OR) is an online magazine that describes itself as "an international e-journal focusing on current political issues in Eurasia and beyond". It was founded in 2010. Despite its claims of editorial independence, the website has been described as under the control of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR).

Julia Davis is a Ukrainian-born American journalist and media analyst writing for The Daily Beast. She is best known for founding Russian Media Monitor, a project monitoring Russian state television, including its international outlets such as RT. She has been described as the "foremost U.S. expert on Russian government-controlled television and propaganda". She has also been described as a "Russian TV whisperer for American ears". Regarding her founding of the Russian Media Monitor, she has stated that "it felt like a very natural thing that, when the U.S. is under such an attack from that part of the world, that with the unique experiences and skills I have, and the language, that I jump in and try to do something about it." She stated that:

Until 2014, my primary focus was on filmmaking, investigative reporting about crimes, government, corruption and civil rights. However, when Putin invaded Ukraine, I was dismayed to discover the lack of reporting on that topic in the U.S., which meant that a lot of news coverage was coming through the Russian English-speaking channel, RT, right here in the United States. RT previously claimed to be an alternative media outlet that reported about fringe politics, global issues and government corruption, but everything changed after Russia annexed the Crimea. In one of her interviews, [RT's editor-in-chief Margarita] Simonyan admitted that RT was created as an instrument to be used by the Kremlin for its info-wars against the West.... She explained that it would be too late to start making weapons once the war has already started. Thus, RT was apparently crafted in advance and was masquerading as a legitimate media outlet, to be used as needed.... This became very apparent in 2014. In short order, the Kremlin's bullhorn was weaponized, spewing out blatant propaganda and outright fakes.

Doppelganger is the name given for a Russian disinformation campaign established in 2022. It targets Ukraine, Germany, France and the United States, with the aim of undermining support for Ukraine in Russia's invasion of the country.
