Ngozi Nma Odu (born 19 October 1952) is a Nigerian politician who is the deputy governor of Rivers State. She was elected during the 2023 Rivers State gubernatorial election alongside the governor Siminalayi Fubara. [1] [2] She was born in Egi clan in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State. [3]

Early life and education

Odu was born on the 23 October 1952, in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area of Rivers State, Nigeria. She obtained her first degree in microbiology from Paisley College of Technology, Renfrewshire, Scotland. [4] She also holds a master's degree in Food Science and Management from the University of London (Queen Elizabeth College, 1983). [3] In 1989 she obtained a PhD in microbiology from the University of Port Harcourt that made her the first PhD graduate in that department. [3]

Career

Odu rose through the ranks in the Rivers State Ministry of Health to the post of permanent secretary from 1999 to 2006. [3] [5] In January 2006, Odu was appointed the Rivers State Commissioner of Education by the former governor of the state, Peter Odili. [6] Odu served the University of Port Harcourt both as a lecturer in the Department of Microbiology and as the first Acting Executive Director of the University of Port Harcourt Foundation. She is also a visiting professor at Rivers State University. [7] In June 2022, Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party nominated Odu as the deputy governorship candidate of the party in the 2023 Rivers State gubernatorial election. [8] [9] Before her election as deputy governor, Odu was the Director of Academic Planning, Pamo University of Medical Sciences, Rivers State. [5]

They are part of the Igboid speaking Areas of Rivers State with three Tribes starting with Ogba as the dominant tribe with 12 legislative wards, the Egbema and Ndoni people who are also found in Ogbaru L.G.A and Ukwuani L.G.A both with 2&3 legislative wards respectively. It is majorly upland and home to the highest upstream Oil and Gas exploration/exploitation activity in the State since early 1960's with about 12 mining/producing fields operated by AGIP, Total Energies and Shell/NPDC with many other reserve/untapped fields. It is part of the Ogba / Egbema / Ndoni / Ahoada West constituency of the Nigerian House of Representatives. Hon. Vincent Job is the Executive Chairman of ONELGA.

Paulinus Igwe Nwagu is a Nigerian politician who was a representative for Ezza North/Ishielu constituency of Ebonyi State, Nigeria in the House of Representatives. In the April 2011 national elections, he was elected Senator for Ebonyi Central running on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform.

He is a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and was educated at Rivers State University of Science and Technology.

He has been the chairman of the Rivers State People's Democratic Party since 2013 and was reelected in May 2016 for his second term. Elections in Rivers State are supervised and conducted by two major electoral bodies, Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). There are 23 local government areas, 319 electoral wards and 4442 polling units in the state. Elections for Governor and the House of Assembly are held every four years, along with federal elections for President and the National Assembly.

Godspower Umejuru Ake, was a politician in Rivers State, Nigeria. He was a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly and a Deputy Speaker. from 1979 to 1983, representing the constituency of Ahoada I for the National Party of Nigeria. He was the Special Adviser on Lands and Housing to Governor Peter Odili, a position he held from 1999 until 2007, and even combined this role with the position of the National Vice Chairman of the People's Democratic Party from 2004 to 2007. He became the third Chairman of the Rivers State People's Democratic Party in 2008 and served until 2013 when the High Court ordered him removed from office.

The 2023 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held for state governors in 31 out of 36 Nigerian states. All but three elections were held on 18 March—concurrent with elections to every state house of assembly, three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections—while the Imo State, Kogi State, and Bayelsa State elections will be held on 11 November. The last regular gubernatorial elections for all states were in 2019. All states have a two term limit for Governors which makes 18 incumbent governors ineligible for re-election.

Amaopusenibo Siminalayi "Sim" Joseph Black-Fubara, is the Governor of Rivers State, Nigeria. He previously served as Accountant general of the Rivers State, Nigeria. He is an ethnic Ibani-Ijaw, and was born in Opobo Town in the Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The Kalabari-born surveyor was appointed the honourable commissioner, Rivers State Ministry of Works by Nyesom Wike, Governor of Rivers State. Prior to his appointment into the Executive Council of Rivers State, he was a principal manager (infrastructure) in the Niger Delta Development Commission. He also contested the Rivers State 2022 People's Democratic Party gubernatorial primary election, where he came second after Sir Siminalayi Fubara, the governor-elect of Rivers State.
