Nic Balthazar (born 24 July 1964 in Ghent) is a Belgian film director and a TV/radio personality (presenter, reporter, producer).

Family

Balthasar was born into a Ghent family of politicians active in the Socialistische Partij Anders. He is the son of Herman Balthazar, professor and former Governor of East Flanders, and brother of Tom Balthazar, a Schepen of Ghent.

Career

His first movie, Ben X , came out in 2007 and has received critical acclaim. [1] The film is based on Balthazar's novel Nothing Was All He Said . The next feature film which Balthazar directed, Tot Altijd, was released in January 2012.

<i>Ben X</i> 2007 film by Nic Balthazar

Ben X is a 2007 Belgian-Dutch psychological thriller film based on the novel Nothing Was All He Said by the film's director Nic Balthazar. It stars Greg Timmermans as a teenager with Asperger syndrome who finds solace in the MMORPG ArchLord as a result of severe bullying. The film's title is a reference to the leet version of the Dutch phrase "(ik) ben niks", meaning "(I) am nothing". The novel itself was inspired by the true story of a boy with autism who committed suicide because of bullying.

Dirk, Knight Brossé is a Belgian conductor and composer. He has composed over 200 works, including concerti, oratorios, lieder, chamber music and symphonic works. Brossé has also composed extensively for stage, cinema, television. His score for the BBC/HBO series Parade's End (2012) was nominated for an Emmy Award. Dirk Brossé is currently music director of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and of the Ghent Film Festival. John Williams chose him as Principal Conductor of the Star Wars in Concert World Tour. Brossé is also professor of composition and conducting at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent. Dirk Brossé has conducted international orchestras, both at home and abroad. Nothing Was All He Said or Niets Was Alles Wat Hij Zei in Dutch is a 2003 Belgian novel written by Nic Balthazar. The book is based on the real story of a man from Ghent with autism, named Tim, who committed suicide because of bullying. Balthazar would later also direct the film adaptation Ben X in 2007. Balthazar wrote the book to cause awareness to how grave the consequences of bullying can be.
