Varma has directed films across multiple genres, including parallel cinema and docudrama noted for their gritty realism, technical finesse, and craft. Regarded as one of the pioneers of new age Indian cinema, he was featured in the BBC World series Bollywood Bosses in 2004. In 2006, Grady Hendrix of Film Comment, published by the Film Society of Lincoln Center cited Varma as "Bombay's Most Successful Maverick" for his works on experimental films.

Transitioning to higher-profile films, Johnson achieved mainstream recognition for writing and directing the science-fiction thriller Looper (2012) to critical and commercial success. Johnson landed his largest project when he wrote and directed the space opera Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), which grossed over $1 billion. He returned to the mystery genre with Knives Out (2019) and its sequel Glass Onion (2022), both of which earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay, respectively.

Jannik Johansen is a Danish film director and screenwriter. He began film-making at Per Holst Film in the late 1980s, thereafter directed and edited television productions and short fiction. He wrote and directed a number of short fiction films, including fiction A Quiet Death, awarded by the National Art Fund. Johansen's feature film début and the box-office hit, Stealing Rembrandt (2003), was nominated on Bodil Awards and Robert Awards, and won Best Acting Ensemble for the male leads at Courmayeur Film Noir Festival in Italy. Later, Murk (2005) and White Night (2007) followed.

B.A. Pass is a 2012 Indian neo noir erotic thriller film, produced by Narendra Singh and directed by Ajay Bahl, and starring Shilpa Shukla, Shadab Kamal, Rajesh Sharma, and Dibyendu Bhattacharya in lead roles. It is distributed by Bharat Shah's VIP films banner. The film is based on the 2009 short story "The Railway Aunty" by Mohan Sikka.
It's Always Late for Freedom is a 2008 Iranian documentary directed by Mehrdad Oskouei. The film depicts the life of three teenager boys in Tehran House of Correction. They are portrayed as victims of serious social problems such as addiction, poverty and divorce, which the Iranian society is faced with.
Cafe Noir is a 2009 South Korean romance melodrama film starring Shin Ha-kyun, Moon Jeong-hee, Kim Hye-na and Jung Yu-mi. Written and directed by first-time director Jung Sung-il, a well regarded film critic-turned-director, it is a contemplation on love and heartbreak largely based on two works of literature - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther and Fyodor Dostoyevsky's White Nights. The critically acclaimed work debuted at the 66th Venice Film Festival in 2009, and Jung was nominated for New Talent Grand Pix at the 2010 Copenhagen International Film Festival.
Wùlu, the Malian Scarface is a 2016 Malian crime drama film directed by Marseille-born French-Malian director Daouda Coulibaly and co-produced by Éric Névé and Oumar Sy. The film stars Ibrahim Koma and Inna Modja with Quim Gutiérrez, Olivier Rabourdin, and Ndiaye Ismaël in supporting roles. The film is about Ladji, a 20-year-old van driver in Mali who becomes a West African drug lord during the 2012 Mali War. He started committing crimes so that his older sister could quit working as a prostitute.
The Courmayeur Ladies Open is a women's tennis tournament held in Courmayeur, Italy for female professional tennis players, whose first edition is part of the 2021 WTA Tour. It is held on indoor hardcourts during late October. Currently it is a WTA 250 level event with prize money of $235,238.
