Nomafrench Mbombo (born 6 September 1966) is a South African academic and politician who has been the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Health since 2015 and a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since 2014. She previously served as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport from 2014 to 2015. Mbombo was the Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance Women's Network from 2018 to 2021. [2] [3]
Mbombo was born on 6 September 1966. She spent her childhood in Mdantsane,East London in the former Cape Province. [4]
She earned a PhD in the fields of Gender and Human Rights from the University of the Western Cape. Mbombo achieved her Masters in Maternal and Child Health from the University of KwaZulu-Natal,and her Bachelors in Nursing Science from the University of Fort Hare. She was then employed in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provincial and local government health departments. [4]
Before being involved in politics,she worked as an associate professor at the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences Department of the University of the Western Cape. [4]
She has also served as a member of various organisations,such as the National Committee of Confidential Enquiries on Maternal Death,NEPAD,and the UN Office of Human Rights:Women &Gender Directorate. [4]
Mbombo,previously an African National Congress supporter,joined the DA in 2013,after attending a DA meeting for black professionals. [5]
Mbombo was elected to the Western Cape Provincial Parliament in the 8 May 2014 election and was sworn in as a Member on 21 May 2014. She represents the Philippi region of the City of Cape Town. Premier Helen Zille appointed Mbombo to the post of Western Cape Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport. She was sworn in as Provincial Minister on 26 May 2014. [6]
In December 2014,Premier Zille announced that Theuns Botha and Mbombo would exchange ministerial positions. Mbombo would become Western Cape Provincial Minister of Health,while Botha would take her position. The changes came into effect on 1 January 2015. [7]
In 2018,incumbent Democratic Alliance Women's Network Federal Leader Denise Robinson announced that she would not seek re-election to another term. Mbombo subsequently declared her candidacy and was elected at the party's Federal Congress on 7 April 2018. [8] [9]
In May 2019,newly elected premier Alan Winde announced that he had retained Mbombo in her post as Provincial Minister of Health. [10]
In October 2019,she declared her candidacy for interim Federal Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance following Athol Trollip's resignation. [11] She lost to Ivan Meyer. [12]
In December 2020,Mbombo was criticised for posting on Facebook that she was on holiday in Limpopo,amid the second wave of COVID-19 infections in the Western Cape. She said that it was a "well-deserved,long overdue break". [13]
On 28 April 2021,Mbombo resigned as the Federal Leader of the DA's Women's Network. Her resignation came after Bonginkosi Madikizela resigned as DA provincial leader and the Provincial Minister of Transport and Public Works. [14]
In February 2023,Mbombo was officially named the Patron of the University of Cape Town's Global Surgery Programme,which was established to help create an environment that will empower leaders in their respective fields to be change agents in the health sector. [15]
Later in 2023,Mbombo was one of the candidates awarded in "The Governing Woman" category in the Mail and Guardian's annual Power of Women award ceremony. This award acknowledge her contribution and leadership in the public sector as Western Cape Minister of Health and Wellness. [16]
Mbombo was married and has two daughters. Her husband died in 2003. [5]
In March 2020,Mbombo came into contact with the French consul-general Laurent Amar who tested positive for COVID-19. [17] She consequently went into self-isolation and later tested negative. [18]

He was the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Community Safety for two nonconconsecutive terms from 2010 to 2011 and again from 2019 until his dismissal from the position amid sexual misconduct allegations in 2022. He served as the interim Leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape from the suspension and resignation of Bonginkosi Madikizela in April 2021 until his resignation from the party in March 2022. Alan Richard Winde is a South African politician and businessman. He is the 8th and current Premier of the Western Cape,having held the position since 2019. He has been a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since 1999. Winde is a member of the Democratic Alliance.

Ivan Henry Meyer is a South African politician who has been serving as the Western Cape Provincial Minister of Agriculture since 2019. He has held multiple positions in the provincial cabinet. Meyer was elected to the Western Cape Provincial Parliament in 2009. He has also been the Federal Chairperson of the Democratic Alliance (DA) since November 2020,a position he previously held in an acting capacity from November 2019 to November 2020. Meyer had served as the First Deputy Federal Chairperson of the DA from 2010 to 2012,and again from 2015 to 2019. He was also the provincial leader of the party in the Western Cape from 2012 to 2015.

An indirect mayoral election was held at a special sitting of the Cape Town City Council on 6 November 2018 to determine the successor of former mayor Patricia de Lille after she resigned on 31 October. The Democratic Alliance (DA) held its leadership conference virtually between 31 October and 1 November 2020. It was originally scheduled to be held in May 2020,but was postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The previous congress was held in 2018. In October 2019,then-party leader Mmusi Maimane announced that the party would seek to hold a policy conference and early elective congress in 2020. Maimane and former party chair Athol Trollip have since resigned from their positions and the DA. The party elected John Steenhuisen and Ivan Meyer as their interim successors,respectively.

The Executive Council of the Western Cape is the cabinet of the executive branch of the provincial government in the South African province of the Western Cape. The Members of the Executive Council (MECs) are appointed from among the members of the Western Cape Provincial Legislature by the Premier of the Western Cape,an office held since the 2019 general election by Alan Winde.
