The Norway national badminton team (Norwegian : Norges landslag i badminton) represents Norway in international badminton team competitions. [1] It is controlled by the Norwegian Badminton Association. Norway participated in the Sudirman Cup until 2007. The national team have never qualified nor competed in the Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup.
Norway is also a medal contender in para-badminton. The nation has won a few gold medals at the BWF Para-Badminton World Championships, with most medals being won by para-badminton player Helle Sofie Sagøy.
The national team was formed after the formation of the Norwegian Badminton Association on 24 October 1938. Unlike other Scandinavian countries Denmark, Sweden and Finland, the Norwegian team had average results in team events in the 20th century.
The Norwegian men's team lost 9-0 twice to Sweden twice in the qualifiers for the 1961 and 1964 Thomas Cup. The men's team later failed to qualify for the 1967 Thomas Cup after losing 7-2 to Ireland. In 1978, Norway failed to qualify for the Thomas and Uber Cup again when the men's team lost against the Netherlands 6-3. In 1988, they finished as group runners-up for the 1990 Thomas Cup qualifiers, the team won against Mozambique and performed upsets against Ireland and Germany, but lost 4-1 the Netherlands. [2]
Norway competed in the European Men's and Women's Team Badminton Championships in 2006. They beat Greece to finish 3rd in their group and were eliminated in the group stage. [3]
In 1978, the women's team lost 5-2 against Scotland in the 1978 Uber Cup qualifiers. In 1986, Norway finished 3rd on their group tie for the 1986 Uber Cup qualifiers after beating France and Iceland 4-1 and 5-0 respectively. In 1994, Norway were close to qualifying for the Uber Cup finals. The team topped the group but were eliminated in the semi-finals stage group tie, losing 0-5 to Denmark, 5-0 to Germany and 4-1 to Poland. [4]
The women's team competed in the European Men's and Women's Team Badminton Championships in 2018. The team finished at the bottom of their group. [5]
Norway first competed for the Helvetia Cup in 1965. In 1968, the national team finished as runners-up, losing against Germany. The team achieved runner-up position for a second time in 1973 after losing to the Czech Republic. In 1975, Norway made history by defeating the Yugoslavian team in the final, winning their first Helvetia Cup title. The team finished in third place in 1979 and as runners-up again in 1981. [6]
In 1989, Norway debuted in the inaugural version of the Sudirman Cup. The team were placed in classification Group 6 with Sri Lanka and Nepal. They won 4-1 against Sri Lanka and 5-0 against Nepal to claim 23rd place on the overall rankings.

The United States national badminton team represents the United States in international badminton team competitions. The national team is controlled by the governing body for badminton in the country, USA Badminton. The woman's team has won a total of 3 consecutive titles in the Uber Cup from 1957 to 1963. The men's team were runners-up at the 1952 edition of the Thomas Cup where they lost to Malaya.
The Philippines national badminton team represents the Philippines in international badminton competitions. It is controlled by the Philippine Badminton Association. Nicknamed Smash Pilipinas, The Filipino team won bronze in the men's and women's team events at the Southeast Asian Games, in 1987 and 1981 respectively.
The Australia national badminton team represents Australia in international badminton team competitions. The national team is controlled by Badminton Australia, the top governing body for badminton in the country.
The Poland national badminton team represents Poland in international badminton team competitions. It is managed by the Polish Badminton Association in the capital city of Warsaw. Poland competed in the Sudirman Cup from 1989 to 2011. The men's team only competed the Thomas Cup once in 2010 and the women's team have never qualified for the Uber Cup.
The Algeria national badminton team represents Algeria in international badminton team competitions. The team made their first-ever appearance at the Thomas Cup in 2018. The Algerian team have never qualified for the Uber Cup and the Sudirman Cup.
The Egypt national badminton team represents Egypt in international badminton team competitions. The Egyptian Badminton Federation controls the national team.
The Peru national badminton team represents Peru in international badminton team competitions. It is controlled by the Peruvian Sports Federation of Badminton. The Peruvian mixed team were champions at the 1993 Pan Am Badminton Championships. This qualified them for the Sudirman Cup. The mixed team would continue to compete in the Sudirman Cup until 2011.
The Israel national badminton team represents Israel in international badminton team competitions. The Israel Badminton Association controls the national team and the players' ability to join tournaments.
The Nepal national badminton team represents Nepal in international badminton team competitions. The Nepalese national team is controlled by the Nepal Badminton Association, the governing body for badminton in Nepal.
The Austria national badminton team represents Austria in international badminton team competitions and is controlled by the Austrian Badminton Association. Austria participated in the Sudirman Cup from 1989 until 2017.
The North Korea national badminton team represents North Korea in international badminton team competitions. The team has participated once in the Sudirman Cup, which was in 1991. The team was ranked 31st in the leaderboards. The North Korean team made a rare public appearance after a long hiatus in competing when they participated in the 2019 Military World Games badminton team event in Wuhan, China. They have never medaled in any badminton tournament.
The Wales national badminton team represents Wales in international badminton team competitions. It is controlled by Badminton Wales, the national organization for badminton in the country. Wales have never participated in the Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup. The team's last appearance in the international stage was at the 2007 Sudirman Cup.
The Belgium national badminton team represents Belgium in international badminton team competitions and is controlled by the Royal Belgian Badminton Federation. The Belgium national team have never qualified for the Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup. The last time Belgium competed in the Sudirman Cup was in 2007.
The Belarus national badminton team represents Belarus in international badminton team competitions. The Belarusian team is managed by the Belarusian Badminton Federation (BBF) which organizes badminton championships and prepares Belarusian national badminton teams. The team was formed in 1992 after the association was found.
The Myanmar national badminton team represents Myanmar in international badminton team competitions. The best result for both men and women's team was a third place finish at the 1979 and 1995 Southeast Asian Games. The men's team was selected to take part in the 1976 Thomas Cup but failed to qualify into the first round.
The Romania national badminton team represents Romania in international badminton team competitions. The Romanian national team have never participated in the Sudirman Cup, Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup. Romania participated in the 2006 European Men's Team Badminton Championships and were eliminated in the group stages.
The Azerbaijan national badminton team represents Azerbaijan in international badminton team competitions. The national team was formed in 1964 after badminton was introduced in Azerbaijan by the Soviets and after the formation of the Azerbaijan Republic Badminton Federation.
The Zambia national badminton team represents Zambia in international badminton team competitions. The team is controlled by the Zambia Badminton Association.
The Barbados national badminton team represents Barbados in international badminton team competitions. The national team is managed by the Barbados Badminton Association in Bridgetown. Barbados have never medaled at the Pan American Badminton Championships. The Barbadian mixed team started participating in the Commonwealth Games mixed team event since 2010.
The Tanzania national badminton team represents Tanzania in international badminton team competitions. Tanzania is one of the first seven founding nations of the Badminton Confederation of Africa. In the 1990s Tanzanian players have made numerous achievements in the African stage, winning two bronze medals at the 1992 African Badminton Championships.
