Oblate School of Theology is a Catholic graduate school for theological studies and spirituality in San Antonio, Texas. It was founded in 1903 by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. [2] Louis Studer, OMI, has served as its president since July 2024. [3] [4]

Contents

Oblate is home to three institutes: the Sankofa Institute for African American Pastoral Leadership, the Pastoral Formation Institute, and the Institute for the Study of Contemporary Spirituality. [5] The school offers the only fully-funded PhD in Christian Spirituality in the United States, founded by Ronald Rolheiser. [6]

Campus

Oblate School of Theology has a 41-acre campus amidst groves of trees in the Shearer Hills neighborhood of San Antonio. The Whitley Theological Center, Oblate Renewal Center, Immaculate Conception Memorial Chapel, O'Shaughnessy Library, Pat Guidon Center, Lourdes Grotto & Guadalupe Tepeyac, Benson Theological Center, Southwestern Oblate Historical Archives, Labyrinth of the Little Flower, and the Last Supper are all found on the campus. The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) is a missionary religious congregation in the Catholic Church. It was founded on January 25, 1816, by Eugène de Mazenod, a French priest later recognized as a Catholic saint. The congregation was given recognition by Pope Leo XII on February 17, 1826. As of January 2020, the congregation was composed of 3,631 priests and lay brothers usually living in community. Their traditional salutation is Laudetur Iesus Christus, to which the response is Et Maria Immaculata. Members use the post-nominal letters, "OMI".

The University of Saint Mary of the Lake (USML) is a private Roman Catholic seminary in Mundelein, Illinois. It is the principal seminary and school of theology for the formation of priests in the Archdiocese of Chicago in Illinois. USML was chartered by the Illinois General Assembly in 1844. USML is often referred to by the name of its graduate program, Mundelein Seminary. Its compound name is University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary.

Ronald Rolheiser, is a Catholic priest and theologian. He received his doctorate at the University of Louvain, and is a member of the Catholic Theological Society of America, the Canadian Theological Society, and the Religious Studies Association of Alberta. In August 2005 Rolheiser was elected president of the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas. He has since retired from the position and now teaches classes for Oblate's PhD and MA students in Christian Spirituality. Prior to moving to Oblate, Rolheiser taught for many years at Newman Theological College in Edmonton, Alberta. Rolheiser is a specialist in the fields of spirituality and systematic theology.
