Oliver Marti is a Canadian-American healthcare investor, hedge fund manager and former professional lacrosse player. He formed the Connecticut-based healthcare hedge fund team CCI Healthcare at investment firm Columbus Circle Investors in 2001 and founded Akera Capital in 2018.

Early life and education

Marti grew up in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, an avid hockey and lacrosse player. Marti played Junior-A Hockey with the Penticton Knights and the Richmond Sockeyes, then part of the British Columbia Hockey League. [1] He is the son of chef Bruno Marti, who has been called “the most honoured chef in Canada” and was a member of the Canadian Culinary Olympic Team that won the Culinary Olympics in 1984. [2] [3]

Marti attended Brown University, and graduated in three years with a double major in economics and business management in 1993. [4] He received the Joslin Award, given to members of the senior graduating class that have contributed significantly to the quality of student life at Brown. [5]

Lacrosse career

Marti began playing lacrosse at a young age culminating as a top player. He was part of two Canadian Junior-A Championship Minto Cup finals with the Richmond Outlaws before being drafted to play with the Senior-A New Westminster Salmonbellies of the Western Lacrosse Association in 1992, reaching the Canadian Championship Mann Cup finals in that year. Marti was a member of Brown University's men's lacrosse team from 1991-1993 where he set NCAA Division I men's lacrosse records including the NCAA tournament record for most goals scored in a game and currently ranks fifth all time in average goals per game. He was a two time All-American, All-Ivy, and also an Academic All-American. Marti played alongside other Brown All-Americans including Darren Lowe, Andrew Towers and David Evans. [7] [8] [9] In Marti's first season Brown won the Ivy League Championship and he continues to hold several lacrosse records and accomplishments at Brown and within the Ivy League and NCAA Division I. [10]

After university, Marti played on the Canada men's national lacrosse team alongside some of Canada's greatest players including twin brothers Gary Gait and Paul Gait, Tom Marechek and John Tavares. Marti was named MVP of the Bronze Medal Game against England in the 1994 World Lacrosse Championship in Manchester England. [11]

Marti was drafted by the professional lacrosse team New York Saints of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League (known today as the National Lacrosse League). Marti played two seasons with the Saints in 1994 and 1995 playing alongside Sal LoCascio, Pat McCabe, Steve Kisslinger and Mark Millon. [12]

In 2019, Marti founded the CT Collegiate Box Lacrosse League (CTCBLL) as the third US State member of US Box Lacrosse's National Collegiate Box Series. [13] In the inaugural CTCBLL Championship, the Constitutional Cup, the Coyotes, coached by Marti, lost in OT to the Revolution. In that same year, as the Offensive Head Coach, Marti helped the USA U20 Indoor Junior Team capture the Bronze medal at the World Junior Lacrosse Championship (WJLC) in Mississauga, Canada. [14]

As Head Coach of the USA U20 Indoor Junior Team, along with Casey Powell, 2022, Marti again led the team to a bronze medal in the WJLC. [15] [16]

Marti, through his investment vehicle 11|88 LLC, is a major investor in the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) [17] and an owner of the lacrosse equipment manufacturer Epoch Lacrosse. [18]

In 2021, Marti led a group of investors that purchased the New England Black Wolves of the National Lacrosse League and relocated the team to Albany, NY. [19] The team, renamed the Albany FireWolves, plays out of Albany's MVP Arena. [20]

In their inaugural season, the FireWolves finished fourth in the East Division, losing to the Buffalo Bandits in the first round of the playoffs. [21]

Investment career

Marti began his career in finance in 1993 as a member of Morgan Stanley's investment banking group and later as a healthcare research analyst. He joined Pequot Capital Management in 1997 as a senior healthcare analyst before joining Columbus Circle Investors in 1999. [22] At Pequot, Marti trained under the tutelage of Teena Lerner, [23] a PhD in Molecular Biology and #1 ranked Institutional Investor biotech analyst, who started the Pequot Healthcare Fund, [24] as well as with Pequot founders Arthur J. Samberg and Dan Benton.

In 2001, with his and CCI partner money, Marti established CCI's healthcare hedge fund unit CCI Healthcare which, along with a team of analysts led by Marti, invested in healthcare equities across sectors. [23] The unit generated one of the industry's longest-running healthcare investment track records, with annualized net returns of 8% and 20% for its two funds, before returning investor capital at the end of 2017 when parent CCI exited the hedge fund business. [25] [26] [27] He founded the healthcare-focused hedge fund Akera Capital, LLC in 2018. [28]

Marti has spoken on healthcare investing on television [29] [30] and at numerous conferences, and has written on various topics, including how the growth in ETFs has distorted pricing in healthcare securities and how fundamental managers should react. [31]

Nevin Donald Harkness was an NCAA head coach of ice hockey and lacrosse at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Cornell University and of ice hockey at Union College. Harkness was also head coach of the Detroit Red Wings and later was the team's general manager. He was inducted into the Lake Placid Hall of Fame in 1993, the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2001 and into the RPI Hockey Ring of Honor in 2007. He is also a member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth, Minnesota, having been inducted in 1994.

Michael "Mike" G. French is a former three-time All-American lacrosse player at Cornell University from 1974 to 1976, teaming with fellow lacrosse Hall of Fame members Eamon McEneaney, Dan Mackesey, Bill Marino, Tom Marino, Bob Hendrickson, Chris Kane, and Richie Moran to lead the Cornell Big Red to the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship in 1976. French was co-owner, along with Russ Cline and Chris Fritz, as well as Executive Vice-President of the NLL's Philadelphia Wings.

Glenn Clark is the head coach of the Albany FireWolves and the former head coach of the Toronto Rock of the National Lacrosse League. He was also a former NLL player. Clark played in the NLL from 1998-2006 for both the Rock and the Philadelphia Wings. With the Rock, Clark won five NLL Championships. He also appeared in three National Lacrosse League All-Star Games, two with the Rock, and one with the Wings. In 2003, Clark played for Team Canada as they won the World Indoor Lacrosse Championships. In 2011, he became goaltending coach for Team Canada. He was drafted fifth overall in the 2007 NLL entry draft by the San Jose Stealth.

Miro "Medo" Martinello is a Canadian former professional box lacrosse player, coach, and ice hockey referee, born in Windsor, Ontario, Canada of Italian descent. He is a member of the Windsor and Essex County Sports Hall of Fame, Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame, and is a recipient of the Canadian Government 125th Anniversary of Confederation Medal "for outstanding Achievements on behalf of Canada".

The East Coast Junior Lacrosse League is a Junior-level Canadian box lacrosse league. The teams are located in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. The champions of the East Coast league have in the past moved on to represent Team Nova Scotia at the Founders Cup, the Canadian National Junior B championship. The league has produced some notable players, including players in the National Lacrosse League (NLL) NCAA Division II, Division III, CUFLA and Ontario Junior A and B leagues.

The Interstate Box Lacrosse Association (IBLA) was a men's semi-professional box lacrosse league based in the United States. From 2019 to 2021, the IBLA served as an official partner of the National Lacrosse League (NLL), operating as a developmental funnel. The league was founded in 2017 to unite regional semi-professional leagues into a system similar to the Canadian Lacrosse Association structure of men's Senior A and Senior B indoor lacrosse teams. As of 2021 there are 52 total teams playing in 17 regional leagues. The Seneca Marksmen are the most recent IBLA champions, defeating the Grand Rapids Grizzlies in Lakeland, Florida on September 19, 2021.
