The novel won the Carnegie Medal for 2016. [2] [3] It was also nominated for the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis in its German translation.
The plot of the book is about the life and survival of Tippi and Grace, two sisters who are ischiopagus tripus conjoined twins. [4] The book was written following Crossan's research on twins and the book refers to past examples of conjoined twins. [5] The book is written in a poetic format, unlike most other children's novels. It focuses on themes of identity and loss.
The Carnegie Medal for Writing, established in 1936, is a British literary award that annually recognises one outstanding new English-language book for children or young adults. It is conferred upon the author by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP), who calls it "the UK's oldest and most prestigious book award for children's writing".
