The Pakistan Navy is the naval branch of the Pakistan Armed Forces. It came into existence by transfer of personnel and equipment from the Royal Indian Navy that ceased to exist following the partition of British India through a parliamentary act that established the independence of Pakistan and India from the United Kingdom on 14 August 1947.

The Western Naval Command is a naval military command of the Pakistan Navy held by the Commander, West, usually an officer of Commodore rank but can sometimes be held by a Rear Admiral temporarily. COMWEST is a type commander who comes under the Coastal Command (Pakistan) based at Karachi. Its units and establishments are mainly scattered across the province of Balochistan, and has an approximate area of 700 miles. Its headquarters is at PNS Akram in Gwadar.
The Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (DCNS) are several very important administrative senior military appointments and staff commands, headed and commanded by the Principal Staff Officers (PSOs) at the NHQ. They are also the commander of their respective branch in the Pakistan Navy and these commands are held by senior flag officers of Rear Admiral and Vice Admiral rank in the Navy and are directly reporting and functioning under the Chief of the Naval Staff. DCNS appointments play a very important administrative role for the proper functioning of an entire navy. The DCNS appointments ranges from rear admiral to vice admiral rank depending on assignment nature.
