Patria ("Homeland") is a 2016 novel by the Spanish writer Fernando Aramburu, published by Tusquets Eds. The story takes place in the Basque Country, at the time when ETA declared disbandment. [1] [2]

Plot

The novel delves into the world of murderers, their victims and the family context of both. [3] The story begins when ETA definitively abandons its armed struggle. A widow, Bittori, goes to the cemetery to visit the grave of her husband, Txato, who had been killed by ETA. Given the new situation, she decides to return to the house and the town where they had lived before the attack. [4]

Reception

The book was very popular and was widely discussed in the Basque Country. [5]

In Spanish it has been read by more than one million readers, and has been translated into English (as Homeland, Pantheon Publishers 2019), German (with 80,000 books sold), Italian (60,000 books), Greek, and Catalan. More than 12 editions have been published in Spanish. [4] It was awarded the 2016 Premio de la Crítica Award, [6] and the 2017 National Narrative Award. [7]

Adaptation

Towards the end of 2017, HBO Europe announced the production of a series based on the novel. Filming began in the Basque Country in 2018, and the series premiered in September 2020.

The series was produced by HBO Europe along with Alea Media, a production company created by Mediaset España Comunicación and Aitor Gabilondo.

Ernest Lluch Martín was a Spanish economist and politician, member of the Socialists' Party of Catalonia (PSC). Carlos Martínez Gorriarán is a Spanish scholar, born in San Sebastián, Basque Country, Spain. After being a member of marxist and basque nationalist movements, he became one of the founding members and spokespersons of ¡Basta Ya! association and head of the Plataforma Pro from which the Union, Progress and Democracy (UPyD) party emerged in September 2007. Fernando Aramburu is a Spanish writer. He is the author of the novel Patria, which deals with terrorism in the Basque Country. His novels and poems have received important prizes: Tusquets, Vargas Llosa NH Prize, National Critics' Prize and National Prize for Narrative Writing.

The National Literature Prize for Narrative is a prize awarded by Spain's Ministry of Culture for a novel written by a Spanish author in any of the languages of Spain. The prize is 20,000 euros.

Use Lahoz is a Spanish writer of fiction. He has lived in many countries for study or work, including Portugal, Germany, Italy, Uruguay, Cuba and France, where he works as a teacher at the Paris Institute of Political Studies. He is a regular contributor to Radio Nacional de España and El País, as well as other national and Latin American media. His journalistic work has been awarded with the Pica d’Estats Prize in 2011.

Patria is a 2020 Spanish historical drama web television limited series produced by Alea Media for HBO Europe, with participation from HBO Latin America, based on the novel of the same name by Fernando Aramburu. Created and written by Aitor Gabilondo, the series follows two women who used to be close friends and become estranged when the husband of one of them is killed by Basque terrorist group ETA. The first two episodes of the eight-part series premiered on September 27, 2020 on HBO Europe, HBO Go, HBO Now and HBO Max.
