The Roy L. Patrick Gymnasium is a 3,228-seat (3,266 for men's and women's basketball) multi-purpose arena in Burlington, Vermont. It was built in 1963 to replace the Old Gymnasium, a then-60-year-old facility now known as the Royall Tyler Theater. It is used mainly as the home arena of the Vermont Catamounts men's and women's basketball teams. It has been the site of the 2004, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022 America East men's basketball tournament championship games, as the higher seed in the final hosts the game. The championship games were all televised on ESPN or ESPN2. Vermont has consistently been among the America East leaders in home attendance and in 2004–05, it became the only America East men's basketball program to sell out every game for an entire season.^{[ citation needed ]}

Patrick Gym is also a concert venue, seating up to 4,000. It can also accommodate conventions and trade shows; there are 22,251 square feet (2,067.2 m²) of arena floor space, with an additional 31,218 square feet (2,900.2 m²) at the indoor track and 36,189 square feet (3,362.1 m²) at the indoor tennis courts, both of which are adjacent to Patrick Gymnasium. The current bleachers at Patrick Gym were installed in 1982, and new lighting and the current floor were installed in 1990.

Currently the university has plans to replace the over 50 year old Patrick Gym with a new event center next to Gutterson Fieldhouse. The new arena will have a capacity of 3,200 with a price tag of $80 million.^[1] It was announced in December 2018 that the new arena will be named the Tarrant Event Center, in honor of Rich and Deb Tarrant who donated $15 million to the project. The arena was originally intended to be ready for the 2020–21 school year,^[2] but construction delays and financial uncertainties due to the COVID-19 pandemic have pushed back the most likely date for completion of the new arena to 2022–23. Once the basketball programs move to the Tarrant Center, Patrick Gym will be converted into a campus recreation facility.^[3]

Events

Patrick Gym is also used as the venue for the Vermont State Division I Boys and Girls Basketball Championship semifinals and final. The Boston Celtics held their training camp at Patrick Gym prior to the start of the 2004–05 NBA season.^[4] In the 1960s, the Celtics played several exhibition games at Patrick Gym.

America East Championship

The gym has played host to many America East championship games because of Vermont men's basketball success in the conference tournament. On March 10, 2018, Vermont hosted UMBC in the America East Championship game. Jairus Lyles hit the game winning three pointer to clinch the America East Championship and advance to the NCAA tournament, which would later turn out to be a historic run for UMBC.^[5]

The very next season, Vermont returned the favor by beating UMBC 66–49.^[6] It was the sixth time UVM had clinched the America East championship and a bid to the NCAA Tournament, and the fifth time they'd accomplished the feat at Patrick Gym.^[7]

Retriever Activities Center is a 4,024-seat multi-purpose arena in Catonsville, Maryland. The arena opened in 1973. It was home to the UMBC Retrievers basketball and volleyball teams, which represent the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in NCAA Division I athletics, from its opening until the larger Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena opened on campus in February 2018. It hosted the 2008 America East Conference men's basketball tournament final.

The 2004 America East men's basketball tournament was hosted by the Boston University Terriers at Walter Brown Arena. The final was held at Patrick Gym on the campus of the University of Vermont, and was the first basketball game held in the state of Vermont to be nationally televised, airing on ESPN. Vermont gained its second consecutive conference tournament win and NCAA tournament berth with its win over Maine. Vermont was given the 15th seed in the West Regional of the NCAA Tournament and lost in the first round to Connecticut 70–53. Boston University gained a bid to the NIT and lost in the opening round to Rhode Island 80–52.

Pritchard Gymnasium is a 1,970-seat, 20,000 square-foot multi-purpose gymnasium located within the Stony Brook Sports Complex in Stony Brook, New York. The gym opened in 1969 and is the current home for the Stony Brook Seawolves volleyball team.

The 2010 America East men's basketball tournament was held from March 4–7 at Chase Arena on the University of Hartford campus. The final was held at Patrick Gym in Burlington, VT on March 13. As winners, the Vermont Catamounts won an automatic berth to the 2010 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament for the fourth time as a member of the America East conference, and first since 2005. Vermont was given the 16th seed in the West Regional of the NCAA Tournament and faced the #1 seed Syracuse Orange in a game played on March 19. As winners of the regular season championship the Stony Brook claimed an automatic berth to the 2010 National Invitation Tournament, seeded at #8, the Seawolves took on #1 seeded Illinois Fighting Illini at home on March 17. The Boston University also gained a bid to the 2010 CBI, were given the #4 seed in the West Region, and faced the Oregon State Beavers on March 17 in Corvallis, OR.

The Vermont Catamounts are the varsity intercollegiate athletic programs of the University of Vermont, based in Burlington, Vermont, United States. The school sponsors 18 athletic programs, most of which compete in the NCAA Division I America East Conference (AEC), of which the school has been a member since 1979. The men's and women's ice hockey programs compete in Hockey East. The men's and women's alpine and nordic skiing teams compete in the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA). The Stony Brook Seawolves men's basketball team is the college basketball program representing Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, New York. The Seawolves have been competing at the NCAA Division I level since 1999, and are a member of the Coastal Athletic Association. The team is coached by former Kent State head coach Geno Ford after former head coach, longtime Ohio State assistant Jeff Boals, resigned to accept the head coaching job at his alma mater Ohio University.

The 2017–18 Vermont Catamounts men's basketball team represented the University of Vermont during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Catamounts, led by seventh-year head coach John Becker, played their home games at Patrick Gym in Burlington, Vermont as members of the America East Conference. They finished the season 27–8, 15–1 in America East play to win the America East regular season championship. The Catamounts defeated Maine and Stony Brook to advance to the championship game of the America East tournament where they lost to UMBC. As a regular season conference champion who failed to win their conference tournament, the Catamounts received an automatic bid to the National Invitation Tournament where they lost to Middle Tennessee in the first round.

The 2017–18 UMBC Retrievers men's basketball team represented the University of Maryland, Baltimore County during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Retrievers, led by second-year head coach Ryan Odom as members of the America East Conference, started the season playing their home games at the Retriever Activities Center in Catonsville, Maryland, but moved to the new UMBC Event Center during the season. The new arena opened on February 3, 2018. UMBC beat UMass Lowell and Hartford to advance to the championship of the America East tournament where they defeated Vermont. As a result, the Retrievers received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. As the No. 16 seed in the South region, they defeated the No. 1 overall seed Virginia by 20 points, becoming the first 16th-seeded team to beat a No. 1 seed. The win is considered one of the biggest upsets in NCAA Tournament history and sports history depending on seedings or point spreads. The Retrievers lost to Kansas State in the second round.

The 2018–19 UMBC Retrievers men's basketball team represented the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in the 2018–19 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. They played their home games at the UMBC Event Center in Catonsville, Maryland, with one game being played at their former home, the Retriever Activities Center, and were led by third-year head coach Ryan Odom. They were members of the America East Conference. They finished the season 21–13, 11–5 in America East play to finish in third place. They defeated Albany and Hartford to advance to the championship game of the America East tournament where they lost to Vermont. Despite having 21 wins, they did not participate in a postseason tournament.

The 2018–19 Vermont Catamounts men's basketball team represented the University of Vermont in the 2018–19 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. They played their home games at the Patrick Gym in Burlington, Vermont and were led by 8th-year head coach John Becker. They finished the season 27–7, 14–2 in America East play to win the regular season championship. They defeated Maine, Binghamton, and UMBC to be champions of the America East tournament. They earned the America East's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they lost in the first round to Florida State.

The 2019–20 Vermont Catamounts men's basketball team represented the University of Vermont in the 2019–20 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. They played their home games at the Patrick Gym in Burlington, Vermont and were led by ninth-year head coach John Becker. They finished the season 26–7, 14–2 in America East play to win the reagular season conference championship. They defeated Maine and UMBC to advance to the championship game of the America East tournament. However, the championship game, along with all other postseason tournaments, were cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2020–21 Vermont Catamounts men's basketball team represented the University of Vermont in the 2020–21 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. They played their home games at the Patrick Gym in Burlington, Vermont and were led by tenth-year head coach John Becker. They finished the season 10-5, 10-4 in America East Play to finish in 2nd place. In the America East tournament, they lost in the semifinals to Hartford.

The 2021–22 Vermont Catamounts men's basketball team represented the University of Vermont in the 2021–22 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. They played their home games at the Patrick Gym in Burlington, Vermont and are led by eleventh-year head coach John Becker. They finished the season 28–6, 17–1 in America East play to finish as regular season champions. They defeated NJIT, Binghamton, and UMBC to with the America East tournament. As a result, they received the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 13 seed in the West Region where they lost in the first round to Arkansas.

The 2022–23 Vermont Catamounts men's basketball team represented the University of Vermont in the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Catamounts, led by 12th-year head coach John Becker, played their home games at the Patrick Gym in Burlington, Vermont as members of the America East Conference. They finished the season 23–11, 14–2 in America East play to win the regular season championship. They defeated NJIT, Binghamton, and UMass Lowell to win the America East tournament championship. As a result, they received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 15 seed in the East region. There they lost to Marquette.
