Paul Lewis Emmel (born May 2, 1968) is an American Major League Baseball (MLB) umpire. He worked in the National League in 1999, and has worked throughout both major leagues since 2000. Emmel was named a crew chief in 2017 [1] and wears uniform number 50.
Prior to reaching the major leagues in 1999, Emmel worked in the New York–Penn League (1992–1993), South Atlantic League (1994), California League (1995), Florida State League (1996), Eastern League (1996–1997), and International League (1998).
Emmel missed the 2018 season, returning in 2019, but again missing work in July and part of August.[ citation needed ] He missed the 2020 and 2021 seasons with knee and leg issues. [2] He returned to MLB in the 2022 season.
Emmel ejected Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox from Game 2 of the 2010 NLDS for disputing an out call on the grounds that San Francisco Giants first baseman Aubrey Huff had come off of first base. [3]
Emmel has umpired two All-Star Games (2002, 2013); two Wild Card Games (2014, 2015); eight Division Series (2002, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013); three League Championship Series (2007, 2014, 2015); and the 2013 World Series. He has also officiated in two World Baseball Classics (2009, 2013).
Emmel was the second base umpire when Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander threw a no-hitter at Comerica Park against the Milwaukee Brewers on June 12, 2007. [4] Five days prior to Verlander's no-hitter, Emmel was also at second base in a game between the Boston Red Sox and the Oakland Athletics in which Boston pitcher Curt Schilling had a no-hitter until Shannon Stewart broke up the no-hitter with a single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. On May 8, 2012, Emmel was the plate umpire for Josh Hamilton's four-homer game. [6]
On June 23, 2016, Emmel suffered a scalp laceration requiring stitches after being struck by an errant bat, which slipped from the grasp of Los Angeles Angels' pinch hitter Jefry Marté during a swinging strike, in a game between the Angels and the Oakland Athletics. [7]
On September 1, 2019, Emmel was the home plate umpire when Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander threw a no-hitter against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Emmel is a graduate of Central Michigan University with a B.A. in finance (1991). He lives in the Denver area [1] and has two children.
In late 2020, Emmel was honored by the Points of Light foundation for his work as the UMPS CARE charities secretary, among other charity activities. [1]
Dale Allan Scott is an American former umpire in Major League Baseball. He worked in the American League from 1986 to 1999, and officiated in both leagues from 2000 until his retirement after the 2017 season. He became a crew chief in 2001. He wore uniform number 39 his first two years and number 5, previously worn in the AL by Russ Goetz, thereafter.
Derryl Cousins was an American umpire in Major League Baseball (MLB), who worked in the American League (AL) from 1979 to 1999, and umpired throughout both leagues from 2000 until his retirement following the 2012 season, ending his career as a crew chief.
Justin Brooks Verlander is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has previously played in MLB for the Detroit Tigers and New York Mets. From Manakin-Sabot, Virginia, Verlander attended Old Dominion University (ODU) and played college baseball for the Monarchs. He broke the Monarchs' and Colonial Athletic Association's career records for strikeouts. At the 2003 Pan American Games, Verlander helped lead the United States national team to a silver medal.

Fieldin Henry Culbreth III is an American former umpire in Major League Baseball (MLB). He worked in the American League from 1993 to 1999 and in both major leagues from 2000 until his retirement in 2021. Culbreth was promoted to crew chief prior to the 2013 season. Culbreth wore number 42 while he was an American League umpire, then changed to 25 in 2000 after the MLB umpires were unified into one crew.
Gerald William Meals is an American former Major League Baseball umpire. After serving as an NL reserve umpire from 1992 to 1997, he became a full-time umpire in 1998. Meals was promoted to crew chief in 2015, and worked the World Series in 2014 and 2020. He retired following the 2022 season.
Andrew Jay Fletcher is an American umpire in Major League Baseball, wearing number 49. He worked in the National League in 1999 and has worked across both major leagues since 2000. Fletcher has appeared in one Major League Baseball All-Star Game and in one World Baseball Classic.
The 2012 World Series was the championship series of Major League Baseball's (MLB) 2012 season. The 108th edition of the World Series, the series was a best-of-seven playoff between the National League (NL) champion San Francisco Giants and the American League (AL) champion Detroit Tigers; the Giants won in a four-game sweep. This marked the Giants' seventh World Series title in franchise history, their second in San Francisco, and their second in a three-year period (2010–2012). Their World Series sweep was the first by an NL team since the Cincinnati Reds swept the Oakland Athletics in the 1990 series and the first NL sweep not by the Reds since 1963, when the Los Angeles Dodgers swept the New York Yankees. The 2013 Detroit Tigers season was the team's 113th season. They finished 93–69, first place in the American League (AL) Central Division. During the season, the Tigers finished one game ahead of the second place Cleveland Indians. They became the first Tigers team to win three consecutive titles since the 1907, 1908 and 1909 clubs won three consecutive American League pennants. The Tigers defeated the Oakland Athletics in five games in the American League Division Series and advanced to the ALCS for the third straight season, the first time a Major League team has done so since the New York Yankees advanced to four straight from 1998 to 2001.
