Minogue worked with a number of producers, including long-time collaborators Richard "Biff" Stannard, Duck Blackwell, Jackson Foote, PhD, and Cutfather, to create a record that emphasises each song's individuality rather than a central theme. Tension, influenced by electropop, incorporates a variety of electronic dance genres, including 1980s synth-pop, disco, and funk, as well as contemporary dance-pop and EDM elements. The lyrics address themes of love, heartbreak, and empowerment.
