Peugeot Motocycles is a French manufacturer of scooters and small motorcycles. Since February 2023, the company has been controlled by the German holding company Mutares. [1]
Peugeot built their first motorcycle in 1898 with a De Dion-Bouton engine mounted on the rear wheel. This model was shown at the 1898 Paris Exhibition but was not put into production. Peugeot did produce a tricycle in 1898 although most of the machine was actually manufactured by De Dion-Bouton.
In 1900 Peugeot started to manufacture quadricycles but these fell out of favor and ceased to be produced by 1903. In 1901, spurred on by the success of the French built Werner Brothers and Company Motobicyclette, Peugeot produced their own motorcycle using a Swiss made Zürcher and Lüthi (ZL) engine. [2] The Peugeot 500 M, a 500 cc (31 cu in) dual overhead camshaft model appeared in 1914, the first of this type. In 1930, Peugeot absorbed Automoto which had been a pioneer in the field of motorcycles and scooters. Peugeot was the leading French motorcycle manufacturer until the 1950s producing many models.
In June 1981 an agreement was signed with Honda which provided for the purchase of Japanese two-stroke engines, variator transmission and electrical components to be installed in the Peugeot scooter. [3]
In 1983 the new Peugeot SC was officially presented, the first scooter with plastic body of the French company equipped with a 50 and 80 cm³ two-stroke Honda engines and automatic gearbox; this mechanism derives from the Honda Lead (NH), produced in Japan from the previous year. On October 1, 1984 Honda enters the capital of Peugeot MTC by purchasing 25% of the shares; the PSA Group remains the largest shareholder with 75% ownership. [4] The alliance with Honda will continue throughout the nineties, in fact the Japanese engines will also be used on the next Peugeot SV scooter, heir to the previous SC. In 2000 Peugeot will also market the Honda Foresight 250 scooter (produced in Atessa by Honda Industriale Italia) under its own brand as Peugeot SV 250.
On October 28, 2006, the "Jinan Qingqi Peugeot Motorcycle" was founded, a 50-50 joint venture between Peugeot Motocycle and Jinan Qingqi for the production of scooters in a new complex in Jinan intended for mainly European exports. The first models produced in China were the Peugeot 103 “Vogue” and the Kisbee, Citystar and V-Click scooters. Subsequently, the production of the Ludix and Django models was started.
In 2008 an agreement was signed with Sanyang Industry (SYM) for the production of scooters from 2009. This agreement provides for the supply of SYM technologies to Peugeot, specifically the Peugeot Tweet and LXR models are launched which are strictly derived respectively from the Taiwanese models SYM Symphony and SYM HD produced in China by SYM. The differences between the Taiwanese and French models are in a few design elements.
In December 2012, the Dannemarie engine plant where the 50 and 125 engines were manufactured was closed. Part of the production was relocated to China at the Jinan plant of the Qingqi-Peugeot Motocycles joint venture. [5]
In October 2014, Mahindra and Mahindra acquired a 51% controlling stake in the company. [6] PSA Group kept 49% stake in the company as well as the use of its brand image. [7]
Peugeot currently produces scooters and 3-wheelers with engines ranging from 50 to 500cc. [8] It operates 2 production sites at Mandeure, France and Jinan, China. Peugeot scooters are sold in 60 countries. [9] M&M subsequently acquired a 100% stake in 2019.
In November 2022, Munich-based private equity firm Mutares acquired 50% equity and 80% controlling stake in Peugeot Motocycles. [10] In February 2023, Mutares completed the acquisition of the company.

Peugeot returned to top-level motorcycle racing in 2016 via a Moto3 project in collaboration with parent company Mahindra. In 2016 Peugeot MC Saxoprint fielded two Mahindra-based Peugeot MGP3Os for John McPhee and Alexis Masbou. Albert Arenas joined the team for the 2nd half of the season as a replacement for Masbou. [12] McPhee took his, and Peugeot's, first Grand Prix win in wet conditions at Brno. [13] In Australia, McPhee crashed while running in third place and was run over by Andrea Migno who was running right behind him. The race was red flagged and McPhee was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with concussion, a broken thumb and a punctured lung. The injuries meant McPhee missed the final 2 races of the season. Hafiq Azmi replaced him in Malaysia, whilst Vicente Pérez replaced him in Valencia.
In 2017 Patrik Pulkkinen and Jakub Kornfeil rode for the team. At the end of the 2017 season both Peugeot and Mahindra withdrew from motorcycle grand prix. The decision to withdraw was made so that the Mahindra Group could increase its focus on the FIA Formula E Championship. [14]

Peugeot is a French brand of automobiles owned by Stellantis. The family business that preceded the current Peugeot companies was founded in 1810, and it is regarded as the oldest car company in the world. On 20 November 1858, Émile Peugeot applied for the lion trademark. Armand Peugeot (1849–1915) built the company's first car steam tricycle. They joined forces with Léon Serpollet in 1886; this was followed in 1890 by an internal combustion car with a Panhard-Daimler engine.
The PSA Group, legally known as Peugeot S.A. was a French multinational automotive manufacturing company which produced automobiles and motorcycles under the Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel and Vauxhall brands. On 18 December 2019, PSA and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) announced that they had agreed to the terms of a binding $50 billion merger. On 16 July 2020, both companies announced the new name for their merged operations, Stellantis. The deal closed on 16 January 2021. As of 2022, Stellantis is fourth largest automaker by sales behind Toyota, Volkswagen Group, and Hyundai Motor Group.
The NH series of Honda scooters was sold worldwide beginning in 1983, in 50, 80, 90, 100 and 125cc versions. All models have an air-cooled two-stroke engine with CDI ignition. All models except the Lead 50 have leading link front suspension, electric and kick start, and a fuel gauge. The Lead 50 has a traditional telescopic fork front suspension and only electric start. All models have drum brakes and CVT transmission.
The Honda Super Cub is a Honda underbone motorcycle with a four-stroke single-cylinder engine ranging in displacement from 49 to 124 cc.
Sanyang Motor Co., Ltd. is a Taiwanese motorcycle manufacturer headquartered in Hukou, Taiwan. Founded in Taipei, Taiwan in 1954 by Huang Chi-Chun and Chang Kuo An, SYM currently has three major production facilities in Taiwan, mainland China, and Vietnam. SYM manufactures and sells scooters, motorcycles and ATVs under the Sanyang Motor [SYM] brand, while it also manufactures automobiles and mini-trucks under the Hyundai brand.
The Peugeot Speedfight is a scooter made by Peugeot Motocycles. It is available in 50 cc (3.1 cu in) and 100 cc (6.1 cu in) models, with the 50 cc moped model being used by holders of restricted licences worldwide. It is available in air- or more expensive liquid-cooled versions.
The Ludix is a 50 cc (3.1 cu in) scooter made by Peugeot Motocycles which comes in various models including "One", "Snake" and the "Blaster RS12". The scooter comes in both air-cooled and water-cooled forms. The 'One' model is a single seat vehicle whereas other variants allowed for the carrying of pillion passengers. The One was also a very basic model that used drum brakes front and rear as opposed to a hydraulic front disc on more expensive models. Similarly, the One was a kick start only model whereas others were available with electric start. Also the One model runs on a generator instead of a 12 volt battery like other models and many other Peugeot scooters, this causes the indicators to be very dim, the horn to be poor sounding and quiet and there to be no lights on the small dash other than a two-stroke warning light. The models were designed to target the budget end of the market and used a modular panel system that allowed for cheap customising options through the use of easily interchangeable panels. Ludix 50cc scooters are used to stunt often.
The automotive industry in Pakistan is one of the smallest but fastest-growing industries in the country, growing by 171% between 2014 and 2018. It accounts for 3% of Pakistan's GDP and employed a workforce of over 3.5 million people as of 2018. Pakistan is the 23rd largest producer of automobiles. Its contribution to the national exchequer is nearly Rs. 50-billion. Pakistan's auto market is among the smallest but fastest growing in Asia. 269,792 cars were sold in 2018, but this number declined to 186,716 in 2019 due to austerity measures. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Pakistan had many Japanese cars. With the launch of the first Auto Policy in 2005, Pakistan launched its first indigenous car, Adam Revo. However, after the 2008 elections, the dollar started depreciating, and due to bad governance, many automakers began to halt production, with some exiting Pakistan. Currently, the auto market is dominated by Honda, Toyota, and Suzuki. However, on 19 March 2016, Pakistan passed a second "Auto Policy 2016-21," which offers tax incentives to new automakers to establish manufacturing plants in the country. In response, Renault, Nissan, Proton Holdings, Kia, SsangYong, Volkswagen, FAW, and Hyundai have expressed interest in entering the Pakistani market. MG JW Automobile Pakistan has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Morris Garages (MG) Motor UK Limited, owned by SAIC Motor, to bring electric vehicles to Pakistan. NLC signed an agreement with Mercedes-Benz to manufacture Mercedes Actros trucks in Pakistan. Pakistan has not enforced any automotive safety standards or model upgrade policies. A few older vehicle models, including the Bolan and Ravi, continue to be sold by Suzuki. On 8 July 2021, Jolta Electric launched the production of electric motorcycles.
Mahindra Racing is a motor racing team based in Banbury, United Kingdom, competing with an Indian racing licence. It is part of the Mahindra Group. The team is currently competing in the electric FIA Formula E Championship and has been since the inaugural season in 2014. The team formerly competed in Grand Prix motorcycle racing, fielding a team in the junior 125cc category between 2011 and 2015. Mahindra later refocused on being a bike and engine supplier, until ultimately pulling out of the sport in 2017.
BSA Company Limited is a motorcycle manufacturer which purchased rights to the BSA name from Birmingham Small Arms Company's successor, Dennis Poore's Manganese Bronze Holdings, upon the liquidation of Norton Villiers Triumph in 1978.
John McPhee is a Scottish Grand Prix motorcycle racer, competing for in the World Supersport Championship for Vince64 by Puccetti Racing.
The Sepang Racing Team (formerly known as SIC Racing Team) was a Malaysian Grand Prix motorcycle racing team which operated until the end of 2021, and was owned by the Sepang International Circuit. First established in 2015 in the Moto3 class and expanded in 2019, it fielded teams in MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 championships. The MotoGP team was formally called Petronas Yamaha Sepang Racing Team (Petronas Yamaha SRT), while the Moto2 and Moto3 teams were named Petronas Sprinta Racing Team (Petronas SRT).
The 2014 FIM Moto3 World Championship was a part of the 66th F.I.M. Road Racing World Championship season. Maverick Viñales was the reigning series champion, but did not contest the season as he moved to the series' intermediate class, Moto2.
The 2016 FIM Moto3 World Championship was a part of the 68th F.I.M. Road Racing World Championship season. Danny Kent was the reigning series champion but did not defend his title as he joined the series' intermediate class, Moto2.
The RC250GP is a Grand Prix racing motorcycle designed and built by KTM for the Moto3 class, introduced in 2012. It is also used in the Moto3 Junior World Championship. The RC250GP is raced by KTM's factory racing program as well as supplied to numerous customer teams. The motorcycle is one of the most successful machines of the Moto3 era to date, having taken five constructors' championships, including a clean sweep in 2013 winning every one of the 17 races.
The 2012 FIM Moto3 World Championship was a part of the 64th F.I.M. Road Racing World Championship season. It was the inaugural season of Moto3.
The Peugeot Streetzone is a scooter produced since 2013 by Peugeot Motocycles. An electric version, named the Peugeot e-Streetzone, was unveiled at the 2022 Paris Motor Show and will be available from 2023 with one or two batteries and a maximum range of 112 km (70 mi).
The Honda Foresight is a scooter produced by Honda from 1997 to 2007. Was also sold by Peugeot Motocycles rebadged as Peugeot SV 250.
The Peugeot SC is a scooter made by the French company Peugeot Motocycles from 1983 to 1992.
