Philip Anthony Mitchell (born 17 April 1953) is a former Australian politician. He was the Country Liberal Party member for Millner in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1994 to 2001, when he was defeated by Matthew Bonson. [1]

The Electorate of Millner was named after Dr James Millner, the medical officer in Goyder's 1869 expedition to found the first colony at Port Darwin, who drowned in the SS Gothenburg tragedy.

Millner was an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. One of the Legislative Assembly's original electorates, it was first contested at the first election in 1974. It was named after the suburb of Millner, which in turn was named for James Millner, a doctor and early Australian explorer of the Northern Territory who drowned on the SS Gothenburg tragedy. It was abolished in 2008 and replaced with the new electorate of Fong Lim. Millner was an urban electorate, and at its abolition covered 22.74 km², taking in the suburbs of Millner, Coconut Grove, Ludmilla and part of Rapid Creek. There were 4434 people enrolled in the electorate as of June 2005.

2001 Northern Territory general election

A general election was held in the Northern Territory, Australia, on 18 August 2001. The centre-left Labor Party (ALP), led by Clare Martin, won a surprising victory over the Country Liberal Party (CLP). Before this, the CLP had held 18 out the 25 seats in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly to the ALP's 7. After this election, the ALP held the majority with 13 seats to the CLP's 10, consigning the CLP to opposition for the first time since the Territory gained responsible government. Martin became Chief Minister, succeeding the CLP's Denis Burke.

Terrence Edward "Terry" Smith was a Labor Party member of Australia's Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, representing Millner. A member of the Labor Party, he was elected to the Assembly on 21 November 1980, following the resignation of Jon Isaacs on 2 November. He resigned on 21 November 1991, and was succeeded by Ken Parish.

SS <i>Gothenburg</i> British steamship wrecked on the Great Barrier Reef

The SS Gothenburg was a steamship that operated along the British and then later the Australian and New Zealand coastlines. In February 1875, Gothenburg left Darwin, Australia and while en route to Adelaide it encountered a cyclone-strength storm off the north Queensland coast. The ship was wrecked on the Great Barrier Reef north-west of Holbourne Island on 24 February 1875. Survivors in one of the lifeboats were rescued two days later by Leichhardt, while the occupants of two other lifeboats that managed to reach Holbourne Island were rescued several days later. Twenty-two men survived, while between 98 and 112 others died, including a number of high-profile civil servants and dignitaries.

Matthew Thomas Bonson is a former Australian politician. He was a Labor member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly, representing the seat of Millner from 2001 to 2008. Prior to his election, he worked as a local solicitor. He was Minister for Sport and Recreation, Corporate and Information Services, Senior Territorians, Young Territorians and Minister Assisting the Chief Minister on Multicultural Affairs. His seat was abolished at the 2008 election and he was defeated by Dave Tollner for the new seat of Fong Lim.

Kenneth Alan Parish is a former Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Millner in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1991 to 1994.

Bagot Road

Bagot Road is a major arterial road in Darwin, Northern Territory Australia. The road forms part of the main transport route between the Central Business District, northern suburbs and Darwin International Airport. The origins of the name Bagot Road is believed to be in reference to the Bagot family of South Australia, who had significant land holdings in the early Northern Territory. In 2010, the road was used by an average of 34,487 vehicles per day. Due to the high traffic volumes, a number of major retailers and fast food outlets are situated along Bagot Road. Darwinbus Route 10 and Orbital Link services travel the length of Bagot Road with frequent stops in both directions.

A by-election for the seat of Millner in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly was held on 21 November 1981. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Labor member and Leader of the Opposition Jon Isaacs. Labor candidate and future Leader of the Opposition Terry Smith won the election against CLP candidate John Robinson.
