The National University of Ireland (NUI) is a federal university system of constituent universities and recognised colleges set up under the Irish Universities Act 1908,and significantly amended by the Universities Act,1997.

Yvonne Farrell is an Irish architect and academic. She is the co-founder,together with Shelley McNamara,of Grafton Architects,which won the World Building of the Year award in 2008 for their Bocconi University building in Milan. The practice won the inaugural RIBA International Prize in 2016 for their Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología building in Lima,Peru,and was awarded the 2020 Royal Gold Medal. University College Dublin is a public research university in Dublin,Ireland,and a member institution of the National University of Ireland. With 38,417 students,it is Ireland's largest university,and amongst the most prestigious universities in Europe. Five Nobel Laureates are among UCD's alumni and current and former staff. The Collingwood Cup is an association football cup competition featuring university teams from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. It is organised by the Irish Universities Football Union,and is the oldest surviving all Ireland association football competition. University College Dublin were the inaugural winners,and later became the cup's most successful team. The competition has been played almost annually since 1914,taking a break during the First World War/Irish War of Independence era and again in 1932 and 1933 due to a dispute between the Irish Football Association and the Football Association of Ireland. In 2014 the Collingwood Cup celebrated its centenary with a dinner that featured Martin O'Neill as a guest speaker. The 2014 final was broadcast live on Setanta Sports and the tournament was sponsored by Eircom.
Caroline Elinor Hussey was an Irish microbiologist and academic. She served as president of the Irish Federation of University Teachers (IFUT) from 1989 to 1992. In 1994 she sat on the Expert Group investigating the circumstances of the 1977 contamination with Hepatitis C of the Blood Transfusion Service Board's Anti-D product. In the same year she was appointed the first female registrar and deputy president of University College Dublin (UCD) and remained in that post until her retirement in 2004. She was Chairperson of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment from 1995 to 2000.

Professor Breda Smyth is an Irish public health specialist who has served as Chief Medical Officer of Ireland since October 2022,having previously held the position on an interim basis. She is the first woman to hold the post. She previously was professor for public health medicine in NUI Galway and a consultant in public health in HSE West.
