Pierre Dorion Jr. (born July 6, 1972) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey executive. He served as a scout for the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers before serving as the general manager of the Ottawa Senators (NHL) from 2016 to 2023.

Career

Dorion was an amateur scout for the Montreal Canadiens for eleven years until 2005. He then joined the New York Rangers as a scout of amateur teams. Dorion joined the Ottawa Senators in July 2007 as chief amateur scout. In 2009, he was named director of player personnel. [1] In 2014, Dorion and Randy Lee were both named assistant general managers after general manager Bryan Murray's nephew Tim Murray left his assistant general manager position to become the general manager of the Buffalo Sabres. On April 10, 2016, Bryan Murray announced that he would be stepping down as the Senators' general manager and that Dorion would succeed him. Murray remained with the team as a senior advisor through the 2016–17 season up until his death in August 2017. Lee remained as assistant general manager. [3] [4] On February 10, 2018, the Senators announced that they signed Dorion to a three-year contract extension. [5] At the end of that contract, Dorion agreed to a three-year extension on September 7, 2021. [6]

Dorion was fired as Senators' general manager on November 1, 2023, after the team was forced by the NHL to forfeit a first-round draft pick as punishment for their role in a voided trade between the Vegas Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks. Dorion had traded forward Evgenii Dadonov to Las Vegas in 2021 but failed to provide the Golden Knights with the player's 10-team no-trade list, a list which included the Anaheim Ducks. [7] Las Vegas subsequently traded Dadonov to the Ducks at the 2022 NHL trade deadline, but the trade was rejected by the NHL due to Anaheim being on the player's valid no-trade list. Upon Dorion's firing, Steve Staios, the Senators' president of hockey operations, was named the team's interim general manager. [8]

Personal life

Dorion has two children from a previous marriage. [1] Dorion's father was also an ice hockey executive, having worked for the NHL's Central Scouting Bureau during the 1980s, spent a year as an assistant general manager in junior ice hockey with North Bay, and was the head scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1990 until his death from a heart attack in 1994. Founded and established by Ottawa real estate developer Bruce Firestone, the Ottawa Senators are the second National Hockey League (NHL) franchise to have the Ottawa Senators name. The original Ottawa Senators, founded in 1883, had a famed history, winning 11 Stanley Cups and played in the NHL from 1917 until 1934. On December 6, 1990, after a two-year public campaign by Firestone to return the NHL to Ottawa, the NHL awarded a new franchise for an expansion fee of US$50 million. The team began play in the 1992–93 season.

The 2010–11 Ottawa Senators season was the team's 19th season of operation in the National Hockey League (NHL). The Senators posted a regular season record of 32 wins, 40 losses and 10 overtime/shootout losses for 74 points, failing to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs for the second time in three seasons. After falling to last place in the Eastern Conference by the end of January, the Senators started a rebuild, trading away several veterans for draft choices. Head coach Cory Clouston was fired at the end of the season.

The 2013–14 Ottawa Senators season was the team's 22nd season in the National Hockey League (NHL). The 2013–14 season was the first season of a re-organization by the NHL of its divisions. Ottawa was placed in a new Atlantic Division with the Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, Montreal Canadiens, Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs. The Senators failed to qualify for the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs.

The 2014–15 Anaheim Ducks season was the 22nd season for the National Hockey League franchise that was established on June 15, 1993. The Ducks won 51 regular season games and defeated the Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames in the playoffs before falling to the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks in a seven-game Western Conference Final. 2015 marked the third playoffs in a row from which the Ducks were eliminated by losing a Game 7 at home after leading 3–2 after Game 5. The 2015–16 Ottawa Senators season was the 24th season of the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Senators, along with all other Canadian teams, failed to make the playoffs. A major trade was made during the season to bring Dion Phaneuf to the Senators and improve the team defence, but the team was not able to make a run to secure a playoff spot. Two significant faults in the team were noted by the media: the club allowed 247 goals, third-highest in the league. Secondly, the team's penalty-killing unit ranked 29th in the league. One day after the regular season, general manager (GM) Bryan Murray stepped down and assistant GM Pierre Dorion became GM. Head coach Dave Cameron and the coaching staff were fired two days later.

The 2017–18 Ottawa Senators season was the 26th season of the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Senators failed to return to the Stanley Cup playoffs after advancing to game seven of the Eastern Conference Final in the 2017 playoffs.

The 2022–23 Anaheim Ducks season was the 30th season for the National Hockey League (NHL) franchise that was established on June 15, 1993.

The 2023–24 Ottawa Senators season is the 32nd season of the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Senators will attempt to return to the Stanley Cup playoffs after failing to qualify for the past six seasons.
