The first site opened at 871–873 Fulham Road (A304) in September 1986. The company was formed in August 1985. [1]

It was the UK's first female-friendly pub chain.[ citation needed ] The first establishment was designed by Sheila McKenzie who became managing director until 1989, and later the managing director of Slug and Lettuce from 1994–2001.[ citation needed ] The company opened a management academy in 1991. It was sold in 1996 for £20m when it had 7 bars. By 2006 it had 38. [ citation needed ]

Structure

The company was founded by Andrew Bonnell (born August 1961). Duncan Watts was commercial director from 1991 until 1998. [2]

Burns & Porter was a business in the United Kingdom that prepared and distributed pub quizzes. In 1976, Sharon Burns and Tom Porter founded and organised 32 pub quiz teams in three leagues in southern England. Burns and Porter travelled the country for the next few years, presenting their quizzes to breweries as a marketing strategy to bring customers to their pubs on slow evenings. Burns and Porter cornered the market in pub quizzes, with over 10,000 teams playing in one of their quizzes every week in the season, while the BBC and independent television companies tapped them for contestants and questions for television quiz shows. Three Burns & Porter Pub Quiz books were published. The company was awarded southern England's most efficient business in 1986, the award was sponsored by British Telecom PLC. In 1988, Burns & Porter was sold to Prism Leisure Corporation PLC. Sharon Burns remained as Managing Director of the company for two years. She now only does quizzes for charity whilst running her own property business and hobby vineyard called Sour Grapes, based in Michelmersh, Hampshire.

Sir Edward Fennessy was an English electronics engineer who helped lead several developments of early radar systems under Robert Watson-Watt and went on to lead development of a variety of radio navigation systems. In the post-war era he led the development of the Decca Navigator System and the company's subsequent expansion to become a leader in maritime radar systems. He later worked for Plessey before becoming a managing director of British Telecommunications Research and then becoming deputy chairman of the General Post Office. He is also known as the recruiter of Arthur C Clarke as a radar technician during the war.
