The Pittsburgh Savoyards are a theater company based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1938 (one year before Pittsburgh Opera), they are currently the oldest theater company in the Pittsburgh area, performing a repertoire of mainly Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. [1] The current headquarters of the company is located in the nearby borough of Bellevue, Pennsylvania. [2]

History

The Pittsburgh Savoyards were founded in 1938 [1] and gave their first performance, The Pirates of Penzance , on May 9, 1939 at the Twentieth Century Club in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh. [3] The company has had a few notable alumni in its history, including actor Burt Mustin [4] and opera singer Mimi Lerner. [5]

Pittsburgh Opera is an American opera company based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh Opera gives performances in several venues, primarily at the Benedum Center, with other performances at the Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts School (CAPA) Theater. Pittsburgh Opera headquarters is located in the former George Westinghouse Air Brake Factory, 2425 Liberty Avenue, in the Strip District. Pittsburgh Opera has been awarded LEED Silver Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council and is the first "green" opera company in the U.S. in the Operations and Maintenance Category. Pittsburgh Opera's headquarters is also the oldest green building in Pittsburgh.

American Savoyards

American Savoyards was an Off-Broadway and touring repertory theatre company that produced light operas, principally the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, in New York City and on tour between 1948 and 1967.

Burton Hill "Burt" Mustin was an American character actor. Over the course of his career, he appeared in over 150 film and television productions. He also worked in radio and appeared in stage productions.

Denis Theatre

The Denis Theatre is a historic movie theater in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1938 by John P. Harris of the Harris Amusement Company, and was in business until 2008. It is currently seeking funding to be renovated and reopened in the near future.

Pittsburgh Playhouse

Pittsburgh Playhouse is Point Park University's performing arts center located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It houses three performance spaces and is home to The Rep, Point Park's resident professional theatre company, as well as three student companies—Conservatory Theatre Company, Conservatory Dance Company, and Playhouse Jr. The Conservatory Theatre Company offers five productions each year that are performed by undergraduate students at Point Park; each season consists of a mixture of established plays and musicals, as well as occasional new works.

Florence Pauline Wickham Lueder was an American contralto who made an international career at major opera houses such as the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. After retiring from the stage, she composed several ballets and operettas.
